It's stuff like this that I think makes this channel the hottest 3D printing channel on KZitem today. Simon you continue to push the 3D printing threshold by creating thought provoking videos that show the concept from start to finish. Keep it up!

Hot dang man, this is SWEET. A while back I thought something like this would be neat, but I was thinking of stencils for my kids to do art projects. You took it up a notch, OF COURSE. I love this. If I get the chance to do this, I'm totally going to say thanks on camera. This is freaking awesome.

3D Printing Nerd Do you think that it is washable?
@TeamPanicRobotics

it most definitely is, I have used spray paint on clothes to make super cheap and durable zombie/splicer costumes. I've washed them multiple times, even having one of the pairs of pants rip in the wash and the paint is still on everything. (although I don't dare wash them with any of my normal clothes)

I thought of these types of stencils to use for screen printing. It would make a lot less work then usual. If you want something to be washable though I'd recommend water based screen printing inks. They can be put into the shirt with an iron and the shirts will be washable at 30°C. You could also try to use an airbrush with the screen printing inks and your stencil.

Brilliant! I did this a while ago. It worked ok for me, but I wasn't very very satisfied. Might have to try again. What I found the most difficult was getting the stencil to sit flat against the garment. It was a real pain in the butt. I tried temporary glue, magnets, and weights. Never was completely happy with the result. I think my problem was that I wanted to use spray paint. If there is any gap, the paint will find it and make edges soft. Probably a better idea to brush. I'll have to try a stickier glue like you did. I guess I was afraid to use a glue that would gum up the garment. You can probably improve the color on black by doing a white base first. Oh yeah, another problem I had is that I had to print my stencil in several pieces because I don't have a large machine, but that really shouldn't be a big deal; you just have to do a good job at joining the pieces (with tape?). Love the rainbow map! I feel like your glue choice is key.

Simon if you want dual color on your 3D printers look into 3D printing a Y splitter to feed multiple extruders into one nozzle. It requires a lot of knowledge to get it to work and a customer g code, but I got it working perfectly on my Tevo tarantula. I plan to add 2 more colors later to make it a 4 color printer. If you want any help just talk to me. Oh and as far as cost goes you only need to pay for another motor, possibly another heartbreak(it has to allow the PTF tubing to go into it and like 10 cents worth of filament for printing a Y splitter lol.

Daaaamn that’s so bad ass! I’m gonna try that tomorrow. BTW, if you want the colors to pop on your black T’s, try laying down a layer of white. Let it dry. Then slap on your color. It works with digital printing and might have the same results with this format. Your vids are awesome, thanks again for your awe inspiring ideas.

Professional screen printers use paints which are the rough equivalent of acrylic house paint. If you've ever painted a house and gotten the paint on your clothes, you know that lasts forever.

this idea is awesome especially if the idea is that someone doesn't like using screen printing.... but as long as the design is in solid shapes and silhouette shapes then this stencil is useful, to compare it with screen printing... the texture of this one is more smooth and full color while in screen printing is like a half-tone texture.

I'd been pondering using 3D printed stencils for making PCBs (circuitboards), ie: you use it to selectively apply an etch resist, or even an etch paste. Or if you 3D print straight onto the PCB, you can electro-etch by using the stencil itself as the resist to protect the board. Also you can go the other way, and instead of using stencils you can use STAMPS. (or you can use a stencil --> to etch a stamp, if you want a super tough metal stamp).
