The largest tannery yet discovered at a monastic site in Britain has been identified at Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal. The discovery reveals some remarkable new evidence about the community of monks and lay brothers who lived there and their central role in spreading Cistercian worship.
Thanks to ground penetrating radar and other geophysical techniques, our archaeologists have been able to confirm the whereabouts of this 'missing piece of the puzzle' at the abbey, revealing its location for the first time in centuries.
Working in partnership with Visualising Heritage, University of Bradford, Mala UK and Geoscan Research and Magnitude Surveys, here we can show the location of the tannery as it was revealed.
