Guys, piston rotation is a good thing! The reason is because even though there is increased movement, the friction is actually reduced because the rings never stop moving. This is because of the boundary layer vs hydrodynamic friction. When a normal piston starts and stops at bottom and top dead center, its constantly transitioning from boundqary layer to hydrodynamic friction. This is why the tops of cylinders wear out the fastest. With a spinning piston its ALWAYS riding on a film of oil, so the lifespan is improved immensely.

in the 1990s Honda developed a motorcycle engine, four-cylinder, with oval pistons so the engine could have eight valves per cylinder. But each piston had to have two connecting rods. this was an attempt to take advantage of the ruling that for competition use, each engine was limited to just four cylinders.. but nobody said they had to be round..they had to make rules like that especially for a company like Honda because decades earlier they were coming up with five cylinder 125 engines, in-line six cylinder 250cc engine‘s, over 20,000 RPMs, more than six speed gearboxes.. The oval engine displacement was 750CC. At the same time Honda also had a conventional round piston 750cc four-cylinder motorcycle engine with only a single connecting rod for each round piston. that engine only had four valves per cylinder. The round piston engine out performed the oval piston engine with more torque and BHP, and a more linear power delivery over the entire RPM range..the oval piston engine did not out perform the more conventional engine.. Probably due to things, fractional friction losses due to the 4 additional con-rods and 16 additional valves & springs.. it’s called diminishing return.. more is not always better.. The most difficult part for honda to make for that oval piston engine, --the piston rings..

25 years ago I watched a TV doc about possible future automotive systems. One team had a hybrid design featuring an alternator driven by a gas turbine. Essentially one main moving part. One of the engineers observed that if we had never made a fuel-burning powerplant before and started from scratch with what we know now, "We would never invent anything as needlessly complex as the internal combustion engine." Kinda stuck with me, even though nobody's ever produced a vehicle using their particular scheme to my knowledge. And now, take it away, piston-loving bros! WOW That engine is Incredible!!! As I can see it's almost perfectly balanced, At mid stroke the 2 cranks auto balance! It's a first time in a single engine, also the 2 rods eliminate the side load piston on the cylinder. The piston rotates with the cylinder! .Plus ALL the head loads and the springs are eliminated. It's like a cam drive and the 4 stroke cycle is obtained in only one rotation, (The 2 cranks turn 2 times faster!) No wonder it has such a torque! (it exchanges HP for torque) also it looks like it's self cooling with I believe some fan on the cylinder. The gears are insignifiant lost. You see gears problem at the end of the crank on a motorcycle? Friction reduction is huge on this engine and the almost perfect balance is a plus. What a great design! SAD it's so badly understood.

With a spinning piston its ALWAYS riding on a film of oil, so the lifespan is improved immensely.

interesting concept, but how do you keep the piston ring from inevitably lining up and resulting in a loss of compression?
@Sir_Cactus
Жыл бұрын
Works, but why so complicated? Just fix the crank bairings to the engine block and let the pinion gear rotate. Reduces friction, makes the piston rings way more happy since they are not designed for that kind of movement and it reduces rotational mass and makes the engine more reliable.

Still trying to work out how the output shaft in the animation is being driven.
@rolls_8798
Жыл бұрын
the piston goes back and forth like usual and the crank it is connected to spins around like usual. first difference is that there are two different connecting rods connected to the same piston, spinning different cranks. both cranks are attached to bevelled gears. the bevelled pinions rest on a 'track' - technically a rack - that is fixed in place. so when the pinion rotates it traces its way in a circle around the track, thus rotating the entire piston assembly which is also connected to the output shaft. I imagine this design would result in some pretty serious lateral wear everywhere but particularly on the wrist pins and connecting rods Edit: you were talking specifically about the animation, I am just as clueless as you about how the rotation imparted from the piston assembly to the output
@tjsbbi
Жыл бұрын
It's acting as an open diff so the output shaft clearly won't rotate. As someone else said in the comments they should fix the pinion shaft. That also stops the piston from rotating which in the present configuration would score rifling into the cylinder as the rings rotate.

How do the valves work? The rotating piston can actually be an advantage because it can keep the lubication film intact. A normal piston stops 2 times every rotation, causing the lubication film to fail. Also big thumbs up for building it and making it work, that is cool all by itself. All that negativity in the comments is kinda depressing
