Well, we've come a long way from the old days when ETOPS meant Engines Turn Or Passengers Swim :)

Title is a bit mis-leading as the 777's performance wasn't extended or changed in any manner. It was the rerouting that will make for shorter flights. Performance stays exactly where it was.

nice work boeing.... the 777 can now really be called a true realibility and efficient aircraft..... but what will this extended ETOPS range do for Garuda? since Garuda will have the 777-300ER. will this make the possible trip from Bali to Los Angeles or San Francisco without stopping for refuel??? thx

Well, if that's the case, Boeing is still right. Less flying hours=Less stress caused on the aircraft. Less stress=+Efficiency

The narrator is Robert Mak, who was a news reporter at King5 news here in Seattle until he was laid off in December when King cancelled his "UpFront" show about politics that used to run on Sundays. Robert often reported on aviation stories (though Glenn Farley is King5's actual aviation "expert"). Boeing simply hired a local professional newscaster who had a history of doing aviation stories.

Air NZ operate Five 777 300ER principally on the Auckland - London, via LA route, with extensions on some days into Brisbane and Melbourne Australia. Two more 300 ER's have been ordered for 2014 delivery. They also operate 8 777 200 ER's to all sides of the Pacific incl Canada, Japan, HK and China, as well as a few daily services accross the Tasman,. ANZ have 10 787.9's on order, which will replace the remaining 5 767's & a couple of the 772's as well as grow the fleet

Mind you, ETOPS rules are targeted at tackling Engine related incidents on twins. A cargo bay fire would be just as dangerous to a twin as it is to a quad engine airplane

Sure, the engines are reliable, but what about other contingencies? What about a medical emergency? Or a fuel starvation problem? Flying so far into no-man's land increases risk to the passengers in many other ways, not just from potential engine failure.

I counted two grammatical errors made by the narrator. One is subject-verb agreement (flights is?) and the other one was comparing cities with time, i.e., "like never before", which should have been "as never before". Proofread please. I expect more from Boeing.

@indo83gmail There's no market for that. Singapore had difficulty making its nonstops to the USA work, and it's a 5star airline with people routinely paying $12,000+ fares. Thai struggled even more. And Garuda would struggle even more... the business ties between Indonesia and the USA aren't anywhere near as strong as Singapore/Bangkok, so neither would the fares. The economics aren't there at all for a nonstop between the two.

ETOPS has been in news for right reasons and some times perhaps for wrong reasons . It is perhaps the first time that it is in news for STRANGE reasons . To limit B787 flights ! Why ? Because the causes of battery fire/over heating during flight have not been determined . And as a matter of abundant caution , FAA chooses to impose flight duration restrictions . A lesson for Boeing and others to be decisive and conclusive in arriving at conclusive results in cases of problems during operations .

A Boeing 777's engines have a 0.02 chance of shutting down. And thus there is only a 0.0004 percent chance of both shutting down. You have a higher chance of winning the jackpot.

I'm no Airbus fan, but it's suspicious how this so called safety rule was conveniently changed at a time when Boeing's 2 engine 777 was competing with the 4 engine Airbus 340.
@bazzie85
10 жыл бұрын
well it's not completely coincidental or secret, Boeing was simply able to demonstrate to regulators using the 777 and other aircraft's extreme reliability records that the old ETOPS restrictions could safely be extended. Ofcourse Boeing is competing with Airbus, there is nothing wrong with that. Nothing suspicious, it was done in plain view of everyone.
@Kenttheclark

They don't even make the A340 anymore... so why is this convenient? Its not like anyone will say: "oh, the 340 flies further, maybe i'll go buy one"?
