This was a special Christmas eve concert broadcast by the BBC on December 24, 1975. Freddie was holding a wine glass (with water in it) to offer "Christmas cheer" to the audience. This live concert was titled "A Night at the Odeon - Hammersmith 1975" as a play on their album "A Night At The Opera" Yes during this period, they did sort of wear costumes. Freddie is wearing his "Mercury" jumpsuit (those are the wings of Mercury on his sleeves and legs). This was during Queen's "glam rock" period". Glam rock was a style of rock music first popular in the early 1970s, characterized by male performers wearing exaggeratedly flamboyant clothes and makeup. Queen is actually better live than on the studio version of most of their songs (some of their songs can't be reproduced live like the Operatic portion of Bohemian Rhapsody). They like to change their songs when they play them live. Mix them up a bit to make them more dramatic and visually entertaining, often playing them faster because of the energy from the audience and lengthening the instrumental part. Try comparing the studio version of "Somebody to Love" - kzitem.info/news/bejne/zJ-g1peLr1-Ta4I to the live version from Montreal in 1981 - kzitem.info/news/bejne/wndor4aliXh6oWU.

Try 1976 HydePark Freddie singing You Take My Breath Away. Also 1985 at the Bowl Milton -Keynes :Another One Bites The Dust or Tie Your Mother Down. Queen is magnificent and Freddie a gift from heaven we got for 45 beautiful years. As for the costumes they were trying to look like angels -Freddie’s idea and making them easier to see. John is the anchor. His favorite song to perform was Dragon Attack which they all rock!

Hi MMB... The glass he was holding was a toast to the audience, this was a Christmas eve concert... and yes, the song is a hauntingly mesmerizing "conversation" between the piano and the guitar... absolutely amazing!! thank you for enjoying this song as much as we do.. Let's dig REAL deep in the hole and explore the world of "Larry Lurex", shall we?? Maybe we can learn even MORE about Freddie in the meantime... LOVE YOU MMB, keep digging! Great reaction! This is one of my favorite Queen songs, too. In the mid-1970s, I heard this song at a friend's house when she had this Queen album playing on her record player. I was mesmerized by Freddie's voice and the instrumentation...Brian's guitar and Freddie's piano! I immediately bought the album - must have listened to it at least two hundred times. At the time, the only way people of my generation could listen to music was by buying the record and playing it on a record player (plugged into an electrical outlet) unless a song played on the radio and you were lucky enough to be listening at the precise moment it was aired. I think I wore through the vinyl on this incredible album....it was so creative, so unique, so different than anything I had heard. Since I only saw them once in concert, I'm beyond happy that a few of their concerts were taped so I can see/hear them perform. 50 years later, they still give me chills!!

Yes...I loved their clothes...if Zandra Rhodes wasn’t designing outfits for them it was Freddie who liked to do that...I think that Queen was Freddie’s theatre and the band members were the actors/players..and he had such fun with that...about the white satin outfit referencing the Roman God Mercury...he was known as the winged messenger and is pictured wearing a helmet with wing tips on the sides..so Freddie had the wing tips on the cuffs of his sleeves and on the bottom of his trousers🤩

Queen - are excellent in Studio where you can appreciate all their intricate harmonies, panning and multi layering. Queen - are superb in their live concerts where they perform the songs differently each time. Freddie is stunning to see. Yeah, Queen all wore some type of costume early days. Then it was more just Brian & Freddie. Freddie goes from surplice tops, to that butterfly sleeve shirt, to what he's got on here, then kimonos, short shorts, unitards, pleather, and everything else he wore in the 80s! Brian is very visual in his flowing sleeves, renaissance shirts, etc.

This song is from Queen ll which, on vinyl, had a WHITE side and a BLACK side instead of sides 1 and 2. When I saw them, they did a number of songs from that album together starting with the WHITE side. They were all wearing white. Except for Brian May, who never stopped playing, they all changed to black outfits for the BLACK side. One of the best concerts I've ever seen. I recommend you check out Queen ll. It never got much if any radio airplay, at least where I live, but it is arguably their best album.

I listen to live Queen albums plus their studio albums but I prefer live performances of Queen on youtube because Freddie is on another level when he's live. As for other music, I listen to the radio when I'm in the car but I don't drive much and half the time I'm listening to Queen's greatest hits CDs. Occasionally I will listen to other artists on youtube. I do not download music but I will buy the occasional CD. The more compression, the less I like it. Thanks for the reaction. This is my favorite performance of this song. Their outfits changed through the years, particularly Freddie's. They were hard up for money in the early years so I there wasn't a huge budget for them early on which is why you'll see some repeats. You'll see them swap clothes with each other for music videos to make it look like they are changing when they really just swapped.

This is a great performance. Check out the pianist in this band. Best ever on this song. Why have some of us followed this band for 50 years? This is why. Queen always changes the live performances. Never the same. Freddie always finished the show with a glass of champagne. Nothing less for our Freddie. So you can tell they are close to the end of the show. They had black costumes and white costumes. Very expensive for a band being ripped off by their manager. BTW-May/Mercury were one of the greatest partnerships in music. And the band always listed their names in alphabetical order because, as Freddie ssid, "We are all equal." and as Roger said, "Some of us are more equal than others." BTW-John Deacon never did and still doesn't want the camera on him. He has always been that way. He actively avoids being seen by the public even though he is no longer with the band. Fortunately, one of the other band members was willing to help him out with that. And it's always hard to get video on drummers due to them being behind the drum kit.

What a reaction. So many who react to Queen in my mind make so many assumptions. It usually takes them a long time to get to their early material. They often don't notice Brian, Roger and John. You did not do any of these and I appreciate that. This song I hoped you would have researched the songs origin and possibly you have done that since this reaction, but I like to go from oldest to newest when I discover a new channel. If you had not done that research, this is from Queen's second album Queen II which in my opinion is a concept album. This is one great album (vinyl) to own because instead of sides one and two, they made side white and side black, and don't tell you which one comes first. This is the third song on side white following Brian's multi-layered guitar intro Procession (great for headphones), then Father to Son then through song blending, they morph into this. You said so many great things about Freddie's singing and piano playing, and this one song, he shows so much passion when he didn't write it. Brian wrote one more song on side white Someday One Day, and Roger wrote the last, Loser in the End which I feel is about his mother. Side black is such a different story. Completely written by Freddie. Both sides should be listened to in their entirety. I hope to see something as I discover your more recent reactions.

I've seen this too many times to count, but I can't get over that it's live. The call and response between the piano and guitar is just perfection, and Roger's drum fills and yes, John's bassline are just killer. Queen did have a black and white theme in the early days, lots of flowy capes, silky white outfits, Roger is often in a black and white striped shirt, Freddie's harlequin jumpsuits... I don't think the studio version is all that special, but that's just me. Compared to this, it's almost boring.
