This is another video in my series “New Forest Walks” accompanied by my Whippet (Logan). In this episode I take a 4 mile circular route to the East of Ivy Wood, located about a mile to the East of the village of Brockenhurst, Hampshire.
Before I started the walk, I dropped in on St Nicholas' Church which can be found on the Southern outskirts of Brockenhurst. Thought to be the oldest church in the New Forest, it is built on a mound that may once have been a site of pagan worship There is a magnificent Yew tree standing next to the church that was carbon-dated in the 1980's & estimated to be over 1,000 years old.
I then explore the cemetery where I find the grave of “Brusher Mills” (AKA The Snakecatcher) before going on to the War Graves that relate to the tome when there was a field hospital in the area during WW1.
I then drive half a mile to the Forestry Commission car park at Ivy Wood in order to start my main walk. Before entering the Perrywood Ivy Inclosure, I take a small detour to investigate the site of an old mill.
My walk then takes me through some stunning woodland, past Ladycross Lodge & in to the Roundhill campsite (deserted as it had been closed as a result of the Covid 19 situation). There is a pretty pond and ancient bronze age barrow to look at in the site.
My walk continues through the Perrywood Ironshill Inclosure to Ivy Wood where I end up by the Lymington River.
During the walk, I mention a previous walk that I did at the old WW2 RAF airfield known as RAF Beaulieu......the video of which can be seen at : • NEW FOREST WALK : RAF ...
