Actually it makes more sense this way the entire pack has now become relevant. Under the old Winston format only the top 5 drivers were really relevant throughout the season. This segment format is basically 3 races in 1 every sunday. Giving better chances to the middle of the pack drivers and creates parity (On paper and in theory). We'll see if it actually works in practice.

I love the idea of having the bonus points build and continue through the playoffs. It's like having home field advantage. I hate! that 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc could get more points than 1st. Competition cautions are ok but I do not like points for a segment win. It just seems wrong. It is like giving a football team an extra point for winning the 1st quarter. The bonus points for the regular season winner is too much. It should be 10 because there are 10 races in the playoffs. I also think 3 bonus for a race win was just right. There are 3 races in a playoff round. therefore 3 bonus for a race win. That makes much more sense to me. If NASCAR was to reward hard racing. Why not give out a playoff bonus point for leading the most laps and another playoff bonus point for leading a lap?

What twat thought that this new system was better? The problem is the chase and phantom cautions not how points are given out. Here is my proposal: - Back to the old 36 race points system and besides both Daytona races and the set finale (Homestead or another track) the other races are randomized taking into account weather (So Sonoma could be anytime, but a track like Indianapolis shouldn't be in February or November). The setup is for normal Sunday races, but just move the days back one for night races on Saturday. - Practice 1 and Qualifying are on Friday - Practice 2 and Qualifying Heat Races (Two Short 10% races) are on Saturday (This is were you can give drivers points 10-1 for a top ten in these heats) - The big race is on Sunday, but select races (Aka less popular races) will be 15-20% shorter (Lets say all intermediate tracks and road courses for now). Winner will get 60 points, Second will get 45 points, Third and lower will get 38 points and below. This will keep a heat winner from outscoring the winner on Sunday if they finish second. - Also work out deals with hotels for NASCAR weekends so that the turnout is better - Lower ticket, merchandising, and food prices for races. - Maybe even throw in incentives like free pit or garage passes if you traveled over lets say 50 or 100 miles to see the race. - Have a giveaway each race were 40 random ticket holders are given one of the 40 drivers. If their driver wins the race then the fan gets 4 free club seat tickets to a race of their choice within the next 365 days. So give the fans the old system, add in heat races, keep the points simple, reward the winner of races as well as fans.
@The_Gestan

Wants to make races more interesting for fans. Drags the race on so we are at the track for 6+ hours. This is nothing more than a scam to get more $$$ from networks, commercials, and sponsors. Fans complained at "Not enough action on track" and "boring races" and also being stuck at track for 4+ hrs watching this. So they end up dragging the races on. This will NOT, and I repeat, N O T sell tickets!!!!! You will get the same or less fans at the tracks as you did before, IF the prices stay the same.

I understand that these changes have been made in the name of making an entire race exciting, not just the end, but it comes across as a gimmick. It seems like the changes that NASCAR makes these days are attempts to create "artificially good" racing. The racing just isn't good by itself. The cars don't produce good racing, the drivers just don't have that thing about them that many of the legends once had, etc etc. NASCAR seems to have to continuously throw out new ideas and changes, such as changing the cars, changing the Chase system, changing the format of the races, changing the schedule, etc. to try to create excitement and interest. Now, I agree, some change is good and is necessary, but it seems that NASCAR has gone far beyond making changes that are "good" to making dramatic changes to keep themselves relevant, and ultimately, alive. NASCAR is hemorrhaging viewers/race attendees, and so far no change that they have made is helping them overcome that. I think that NASCAR is desperately trying to appeal to a younger audience, but unfortunately, there aren't large numbers of new, young fans being created. With little new audience being created, it is a huge risk to create a system like this, because the risk of alienating the older audience is very high. Losing them could ultimately be the downfall of NASCAR. It is sad to see NASCAR continue to slide down this long slope of mediocrity, because I want it to be great and exciting. As one of NASCAR's young fans, nothing used to excite me more than going to races, but I have lost interest. NASCAR is no longer appointment TV. All of this is sad, but it is true.
