I've heard people talk about the effects of temperature but I've never seen anyone brave enough to put their brand new fuzz in the freezer to make a point. Kudos! Seriously, the effect of temperature is really striking.

When do you use the bias trim pot? Do you know what it will do with different voltages in the batteries? Did jimi use a bias trimmer? Or did roger add one on only for the jimmy

I have a number of Ge fuzzes and two of them cross over from the sustaining, singing mode into the spitty, gated mode at room temperatures after the circuit has warmed up (5-10 mins). Worse, the bias adjustments on these cannot get it out of the velcro zone. Others, including my Sunface, operate perfectly at room. We should pass a Constitutional Amendment that all fuzzes have temperature compensation, and while we're at it, an LED, an on/off switch if battery only, and a 9V center-negative power input with line noise filtering.

Very easy and inexpensive to build if you can source suitable transistors. Which is getting harder by the day, but still possible. I had a matched pair of 2G308 transistors left so I tossed one of these together last week with parts I had lying around. Total cost was around $25 including whatever I paid for the transistors (somewhere in the $15 zone) and it's the best sounding fuzz I've ever used, including the 6 other Ge Fuzz Faces I've made for people over the years. Absolutely worth doing for anyone with even the slightest interest in electronics - I literally learned to solder making my first point to point fuzz face and it still sounds excellent and stood up to a couple hundred shows. If I could do it so can you, believe me.

Have to have the external bias! Wow, very cool pedal...AND I hear you about the stability of the Germanium transistors. Still has some VAP! warm? Funky, HOT!? Nice demo. I have a Kingtone Ge Mini which is pretty awesome. Every time I get rid of a Fuzz Face, I end up buying another. Nice compliment to any Fuzz, is the Henretta Purple Octopus (Octave Up pedal). Allows you to turn on that Octave up clean, with Overdrive, or push a Fuzz over the edge!

Great vid as always, Good Sir! Two times in my life I've been in sorta power pop type bands, and those were the two times I did the 'germanium fuzz on all the time, manage the grit with the guitar volume' thing. The sounds were really fantastic, I got many, many, many compliments on my tone from other guitar players where I could say, 'Yeah, I'm really using a fuzz face as my "always on" drive.' The big advantage I had, though, was I was just playing guitar and singing some harmony vocals in that band. If I had been the singer as well (which I usually am) I don't think I could have managed all of that volume knob messing around and still done the right job with the vocals. You have to make pretty minute changes in the volume kind of all the time. Great stuff though, I've always thought a Analogman silicon fuzz would be the final statement in my fuzz facing for all of these years.

Honestly surprised you chose Germanium. Things are so heat sensitive. Well not surprised I guess. Lol. I want one with those big Russian ones he has at the moment. He says the clean up is phenomenal and that is what I'm most interested in. Just found you through Rhett... You probably tried it already but the JHS Smiley is really good. Don't know how it stacks up to a Sun Face but Josh really dialed the thing in. It's pretty great.

Great review of the 2N, I had one previously and one of my favorite Sunfaces, but it lacked the Sundial so I never had a chance to experiment with it. Could the range of the Sundial "normalize it" from cold, warm and hot examples you provided or lets say its a hot gig and its getting "spitty", can you bring it back to the sounds as if it were cold or just warm?
@MichaelWWestbrook

Not completely. Honestly I wish the sundial did more. The range isn't as wide as I would like but my guess is there's a limit to what you can do with a control like that.

so helpful. was just on his site and I spec'd this exact thing (including green led), then found your video! I just need to make final call on Germ vs. 183. Hearing the germanium variance, sort of pushes me to 183... But I guess the sundial / bias knob fixes this??
@Teleman76
3 жыл бұрын
Test the waters with either germanium or silicon. Germanium has a nice clean up that generally gives you a brighter and sweeter tone. Silicon doesn’t clean up as well. Silicon usually has a higher gain. The 183 silicon trannies have the most gain. This is the transistor they used in the Eric Johnson Fuzz Face. Admittedly I own more fuzzes than should ever be allowed. They’re fun and addictive at the same time. The subtle nuances keep you searching. Currently I have 14 different Sunface units and they’re all exceptional. Either way you’ll be happy. Definitely get the sundial option. Good luck.

There is an internal trim pot (stock) that acts as an input gain or you can have it added as an external control for a bit extra

USA 2N - What’s been your experience with the differences?
@sideasoundlab
3 жыл бұрын
@@MichaelWWestbrook The USA 2N is made by general electric. I had both and kept the unmarked 2N. The General Electric had a nice clean up, just like the unmarked 2N, but I found that the clean-up on the unmarked 2N was a bit brighter and glassier. The biggest difference was with the fuzz maxed though. I found the general electric to be too dark and bassy for my marshall amp. The unmarked 2N has a brighter fuzz, with a tighter low-end. It works much better for me, but I"m sure the standard 2N could work better on brighter amps. Take in consideration that my standard 2N was low gain, so maybe I would have had a different experience if I had gotten it in high gain ( wich are usually brighter)

Analog Man or not...everybody calls shitty sound/tone för incredible...??? There is a couple of good fuzz tone-makers out there. Regardless of name(and price....and bla bla in description) some are good and most....not so much.....by the way who is playing in north pole or death valey mid day (couse germanium is sensitive...) If it's so bad and sensitive what's the point of making these and charging 300 bucks and up....??? Sounds like you buying a expensive bag of problems...should be like 10 bucks a piece....
@DirkGentley42

You have to work with a fuzz face to get the best out of it,even with silicon ones. It's now just a turn up to ten and play pedal. I dislike my Jimi Hendrix fuzz clone with the fuzz up full,but turn it down to 3 o'clock,or lower, and the guitar down a bit and the range of tones is amazing.
