New Glenn has to launch by sometime in October 2024, otherwise the next Mars window isn't until late 2026. However, I was impressed by Tim Dodd's interview of Jeff Bezos at the New Glenn factory at KSC, and I'm sure that they'll make the 2024 window. I'm a SpaceX fan but I'll be cheering for New Glenn's success.

Right on Victor, I do not like Benzo. I thionk he is using the Government and the American people to feed his ego and milk the people of money for a project he really does not csre about, His lander is a picture on the computer, so not even a hard copy, I believe. Benzo`s lander cost TWICE as much as the SPACEX system. SPACE X does not need the ARTIMIS to do its mission! Musk said years ago that ARTIMIS IS A WASTE OF MONEY. So after all that old man talk, I am 67, I BELIEVE WE NEED every one, IN SPITE OF bENZO BEING A UNTRUST WORTHY, BRIBING, CONGRESS AND SENATE PEOPLE with RE ELECTION DONATIONS to actually over throw contracts with NASA and making it more easy for him to win contracts with NASA.

It DOES make perfect sense if you’re VERY confident you can launch to orbit. The recovery proposition has ZERO impact on getting payload to orbit. My outsider, amateur guess: they have a 90% chance of successful orbit/payload deployment, and a 50% chance of successful booster recovery.

@Shrouded_reaper I know! It would be an amazing accomplishment. BO's experience with New Shepherd, that the booster engines have already been proven, and that NASA feels confident enough to be their first customer with a freaking MARS launch of two Escipade satellites tells me NASA is VERY confident they will succeed. I'm knocking it from a 'NASA endorsement indicating' 99% success estimate to my 90% guess because it IS so hard to get it right the first time.

@@mattkingston6157I’d say it’s about 50/50 ish if the first launch works nowadays. But that is mostly because of more companies adopting a faster SpaceX-like development strategy. BO uses the “get it right the first time” approach that works better for already proven concepts.

@@RAH254 well technically that was just to the distance of the Mars orbit. Also, what new Glenn is attempting is similar to what SpaceX attempted and succeeded in 2015. Launching and reusing the first stage. It is just happenstance that they happen to be launching explanation vehicles for Mars on their first launch. SpaceX has launched many and much larger packages, but just by happenstance not yet to Mars. SpaceX is now attempting to do something much more difficult than simply reusing the first stage. Full reuse is probably an order of magnitude more difficult. You’ll notice that Jeff Bezos hedge pretty hard on whether they would be attempting second stage reuse when he talked to Tim Dodd. He said it may be more cost-effective to just throw away the second stage. He may be right, but that’s only because it’s so difficult toachieve full reuse.
@mattkingston6157

@@mbmurphy777 uhhhhhhh no you can't just handwave away the fact that spacex hasn't launched something to mars and will be beaten by BO. Musk said they would launch and land a propulsive dragon capsule on mars years and years ago. that never happened, and now starship was supposed to launch and land on mars in 2022. its 2024 and they cant even get it to orbit lol. Blue origin is going to pull off their first launch and actually send a payload to mars orbit. you can piss and moan about how much more impressive second stage reuse is, but when it comes down to actually having a viable system, impressiveness or engineering difficulty doesn't really mean much. its like looking at the Eiffel tower and saying "yeah but what if someone made one twice as tall?" totally pointless and a useless comment. No one even knows if second stage reuse is actually beneficial anyway. does anyone even actually consider the costs of spaceflight? the launch is usually the cheapest part for higher end satellites and large probes
