When I went to Army basic in 1974, I was issues a POS Colt M16A1, just like everyone else. Those training weapons were WELL used to say the least. I would guess mine would be capable of 3 inch groups at 100 yards, just judging from all the times I shot it and saw the bullet impact something down range. When I got to my permanent station in Germany, I was issued a brand new H&R M16A1. It was like a totally different weapons from the Colt. It was heavier, it was solid, it was accurate. It was the best M16/AR I ever handled and shot. About 10 years ago, I bought a Sigarms AR style weapon in 5.56/.223. It is a very solid rifle and it shoots well. Does it shoot as good as that H&R I had in the Army? No. Close, but no cigar. The M16 had a 20 inch barrel I believe, this Sig has a 16" barrel. The Sig is nice, well built, but man that H&R was just so solid and tight. The quality was very high on that H&R.

M16A1. COOL piece. Between '78 and '81 I never drew one that wasn't worn out, no finish, and nothing matched anything on the weapon. The saving grace was at least All the rifles had cleaning kit buttstocks and complete kits. And we never drew clean weapons, always dirty. Pistols, rifles, and the Pigs. Just absolutely filthy. It was so bad we'd go early and draw our weapons and take an hour scrubbing them and then go back and get squared away. I'll say though, our worn out .45's, M16's, and M60's ran like sewing machines! I thoroughly enjoyed shooting it! More so than the M-14's we were also assigned, because of the weight. ( We loved shooting the M-14 on the range, as each of us was assigned a specific rifle and 11 mags. We didn't baby them, but we sure didn't abuse them either!)

I replaced the handguard with the A1 triangular style, which also had some flex to it. I retained the A2 trap door butt stock, tho. I am not a repro purist. I also built a PSA 16" middy on an A1 upper, with collapsible butt stock. That is my favorite. So light, so nice to shoot. Finally have a black, 12-twist, H&R M16A1 enroute to my FFL. Reminds me of my A1 in Army Basic Training and Infantry School 92/93. During a break in military service, worked for a SO where they issued me a new/newly refurbished full-auto A1. Went on to use the A2 through the decked out, suppressed M4 flavors in the Infantry. Did pick up H&R’s gray 604 slick side rifle w the same 12-twist barrel. Eugene Stoner didn’t like the forward assist thinking it was unnecessary. Military brass demanded the forward assist as they liked the handle on the M1 and M14. Anyway, I’m most impressed with it! Found an old GI 20-rd mag with a metal follower in the garage. They pair well together. I don’t care for the Colt Reissue. It’s not made by Colt (loosing value IMHO), has laser engraving, not marked as correctly as it could be, and you’re paying an extra $1,000+ just for the name; no thanks. Almost bought a Brownell’s retro rifle, but the NDS on the carry handle under the rear sight turned me off big time! I never knew much about Troy Industry’s retro rifles, but heard good things about them Windham was created by the original Bushmaster folks, and they made good stuff before going to crap. I’d consider one of their rifles, something from Fulton Armory, or other you mentioned.

From 1979-1985 our M16A1s in the army had black nylon slings that were quieter, and we had the newer trapdoor buttstocks with a fixed rear sling swivel. But so far, everything else looks the same. I didn't know PSA was making these, but I actually ONE H&R M16A1in basic training. If one of the tabs broke off a handguard it was okay as long as the one next to it wasn't broken off too. If the left and right broke in the same place, unit armorers could switch one with a rifle that didn't have a broken one, and both rifles were considered serviceable. They were made of fiberglass reinforced polymer, like Zytel. If those are as flimsy as they look, my guess is they're just injection molded plastic.

@@JaredAF It figures they would take a cheap shortcut. My Colt AR-15 is a cross between the A1 and A2 style. It has the A2 stock, barrel, and handguards, but the upper has an A1 sight and the brass deflector of an A2. Colt Canada made uppers for the Canadian military that way for the C7 rifle, adopted in 1984. So, mine is all A2 except for the A1 rear sight, or it's a C7 without the full-auto capability, and it has the stupid, oversized 2-screw pivot pin. That's one reason I bought a second AR. I still like the A1, but an A1 with A2 handguards would be better. Besides cutting down on the number of unique parts, they're less fragile than the A1 handguards.

I really like your gun selection. Being a swede and love the 6.5x55 mauser and AR 15 A1, mine is a Windham. Still great looking rifles (AR15) great videos ! keep it up.

Thanks! I probably own more rifles in 6.5x55 than any other caliber, and more Swedish Mausers than any other rifle

Very cool. Getting the same one but the AF one without the forward assist. Now I just need to find 20 rd metal magazines. I might have to make a trip down to Texas. I'm in Colorado. We can get 30 round here at shops, we ignore the BS law, but no one carries the metal 20 rds. Obviously -no one will ship them either since I'm in CO. What a pain.

Yep. Lightweight pencil full velocity barrel. Handles great. Cleaning kit in the stock. The duckbill or open cage flash suppressor allowed it to do a titty twister on rioters rather than the heavy bayonet. It also could be used as a wire cutter. Just as designed.

I just bought the upper, already had the lower, only grip I have is the cheesy plastic forgrip. "U.S. collectors ordinance" sells the Bakelite original furniture.

I'm considering that Windham weaponry that you show towards the end of the video. I have a nice set of super glossy A2 Hand guards from my old Colt that would complete it and be more robust than the A1's. What are your thoughts?

I went through Basic and Infantry AIT at Ft. Benning GA Harmony Church with the M16A1 in 1986. Mines was a GM Hydramatic Division made M16A1. One guy in my platoon had a Harrington Richardson and it had the sitting fox in a circle stamped on his lower receiver with a shiny chromed bolt carrier.

@@heyitspete6472 Thank you.. We were just young guys who were just 17-19 year olds back then. The M16A1 was part of our lives as young men doing our service to our country. Those were some memories good, bad, and ugly. It was an adventure that we like your Uncle would never forget for the rest of his life. Rifle qualification in Basic Training was a life time event and a rite of passage for every soldier. To make it the first time and just qualify is just pure joy and happiness in our time as young soldiers. I am old now but never forget those days at Ft. Benning GA ever...

Thank you for the detailed update on your issues with your H&R and the steps that Mike took to take care of you, that is impressive and the way CS should be done. Im on the ArfCom thread as well, and have one of the same first batch as you, serial number in the low 40s. Curious, did they say anything about this being a one off issue or could there be a concern with all of the guns in the first batch? I have not yet shot mine, as work has been too crazy. I may break out the calipers today and take some measurements, as I think it was you that posted those pictures on the forum showing the front sight block. I agree with you on the furniture, it is fine, but i decided to buy some OG USGI furniture, from USOrdinance. Little pricy, but true period correct and I love the patina/scratches, just completes the rifle!

I've looked at the OG furniture on that website, but I think I'll just wait for the repro retro AR market to fully mature and we can finally get some decent A1 furniture on the market. He did not say as to whether this issue was present throughout the entire first batch. You could try using a straight edge/steel rule to determine at least some level of straightness between the gas block and the upper. You can also take measurements around the gas journal using a depth gauge like I did; the sights on my rifle weren't canted they were actually just off center by about .030". Thanks for watching and commenting!

I have one in the 30's, been to the range once but only took it out to 50yds. With windage centered and not even touching the front sight post I was an inch or two off to the side. One click with the windage and was grouping perfectly @ 50. I assume because I haven't even had to adjust elevation that sighting at 100 shouldn't be an issue. I also had 0 malfunctions with about 150 rounds through it.

H&R was selling stripped uppers/lowers, but now they have enough parts to make full guns theyre focusing on that. Eventually theyll sell stripped uppers again

Man this is one sexy rifle. I’ve always wanted a AR that looked like a M16 I have a A4 Colt AR that looks like that but I just need the triangle hand guards but it’s a safe queen I’ve never shot it.

Actually it was 22-24 depending on which numbers you used. The official number was 22.8. The original triangle handguards were very sturdy.
