The title says it all. I bought an eight course renaissance lute last week.

The instrument is quite a bit bigger than my 20" baritone uke. The active, vibrating part of the strings is 60cm. The peg box points over the musician's left shoulder, so it doesn't add much extra overall length. The break angle of the strings at the nut is also very different from guitars or ukes.
I don't like Aquila strings on my ukes, but these lute strings are very comfortable to play. The strings are longer and lower tension, therefore they are also much lighter gauge. The lute itself is light as a feather.
I am still finding the best sitting position for me; the bowl back takes some getting used to. The friction pegs take a lot longer tuning the strings, and there are 15 of them!
Learning French lute tabs is not that different from uke/guitar tabs, but think of the nut as fret a, the first fret is b, second is c, third is d etc. The number of flags on the stem showing note length (value) is different from standard notation.
