Hey folks, I got day/night backwards! 😅 If a player casts NO spells it becomes night, and if a player casts 2 or more spells it becomes day! Sorry in advance!

Favorite combo with Vadrik so far : Vadrik having at least 2 power, then cast Seething Song, copy it with Reiterate (paying Buyback), enjoy infinite red mana. If Vadrik's power is 4 or more, this two-card combo need only RRR to be cast.

I really enjoyed this exploration of the spellslinging archetype and the comparison between the various commanders. As someone with at least four spellslinging decks already I think there’s room for a Vadrik big spells deck in my collection.

You talk about this a little bit but vadrick has a lot more acceleration than Mizzix when it comes to cost reduction, while also having a more intuitive curve to increase it. Any spells that increase Vadrick's power is going to result in cost reduction while only continuously bigger and bigger spells are going to apply Mizzix's effect. This means more and more gas for mizzix, while spells that increase power are really common and cheap and apply near exponential effects for Vadrick. Ultimately, I think Vadrick ends up much "faster" as a spellslinger commander, not only because it's a full mana less, but because it's cost reduction builds faster, even if it's cost reduction is less permanent.

How about Opal Palace? It makes your Vadrik bigger each time he comes back. While the goal is to ensure he doesn't die, Opal Palace would at least make it less painful.

Opal palace still ticks in the first cast if you have it early.

very fun review, I especially love the part at the beginning where you compare Vadrik with existing spellslinger commanders to highlight the differences in strategy and focus, would love to see more of that for future commanders that also present a new take on an existing archetype. Personally I'm more of a Mizzix fan but after noticing that Vadrik discounts spells based on his power, not on his +1/+1 counters, I'm curious to see a deck piloted by him really pop off!

Great deck, Chris! Never had the chance to build an Izzet Spellslinger, but these all look like great ideas to try! Good work, as always! Keep it up!

Been looking at building a spellslinger deck since I sold my Mizzix deck. This looks like a strong contender for sure.

You know what I'm weirdly NOT seeing on the EDHREC page for Vadrik? Shuko. Or really anything else that pumps him up even more than temporarily. Just because something is a spellslinger, it doesn't mean you have to go all in and drop all other card types. Some examples of what I would consider for this deck: Grand Architect, Mindwrack Liege, Paragon of Gathering Mists, Sunken City, Glass of the Guildpact, Paragon of Fierce Defiance. A small handful of anthems can make a key difference. But yeah, mostly Shuko.

I actually just piloted a semi thrown together build, and the combination of heros blade into commander for a 4 mana reduction immediately was extremely powerful. I've elected to throw other equipment as well in the deck, and so far it looks promising.

idk how you built youre vayran, but mine going undefeared in my group and they ril alot of field wipes , my vayran is a copy spell engin, for example, at a point i can cast a single spell , it may be coubtered ir not but the value i get is from the coppies, i can cast a lighning bolt and hit 3 people for 90+ dmg off 1 spell at the barly functioning state of my build, i can get up to a maximum of 8 to 12 copied spells, but iv never been in a spot with my vayran build where iv came close to loosing

After much deliberation, I do not think Vadrik can beat Mizzix as best Spellslinger. The biggest reason for this is Vadrik needs it to turn from night to day and day to night without being targeted by a kill spell or the like. Mizzix on the other hand pops off easily and is only strengthened by cards with the X cost, or more importantly cards that have buyback. Vadrik is far less controllable because he relies on that one-turn mega push. Vadrik would be an excellent addition into Mizzix's 99 though.

Honesly, i play Vadrick as though the day/night ability isnt there. The goal is to abuse pump spells most of the time. the day/night is just a bonus at best, imo

I play with veryan as my commander and Voltron her up for quicker commander damage using a ton of 1 mana spells. I like vardik but I really am not a fan of the day night mechanic. Seems dependent on your opponents

I’ve been thinking of making this guy a Voltron/Spellslinger. Equip him up so he can deliver beats, and you get the spell discounts

Can someone explain how Epic experiment works with the X cost cards? playing them for no cost i thought would mean they are cast at 0 or does this not apply when you have vadrik out? i understand normally X spells are cast as his power but i thought when there is no cost its cast as 0? is this right? :S thanks!

The discount applies even when choosing a value. X can equal 1 but the one doesn't have to actually be paid
