Thank you for the video and your hard work! You obviously did a lot of research on the more complex queries you made, but this new function reminded me of a Commodore 64 Plus 4 I had in the 80’s. The Plus 4 were 4 function keys you could program to do anything you wanted, they were called hot keys, so in your first few examples it seemed like typical Microsoft where they add additional steps to do what existing formulas could already do. I think the more complex queries you did are where this will be beneficial, especially if they were recorded in a macro in a template, but for the amount of code in your formulas I have to wonder if a lot of this would be better off done in Access, like the append query.

Oh wow this is great. Awesome functions. I was making a similar function to your HFILTER. I wanted to see what you did to see if I was overthinking. Amazingly, they are actually quite similar. Stepping through yours, I noticed the resulting array has errors if the FILTER function is empty (no items match the conditions). I was having the same problem on mine. When that argument is returned, it's a single cell. There's more than one header, so the error message is put in the first data cell only. This results in errors in the other data cells. I got around this by checking if there are no true values in the condition array --> IF(SUM(--(Conditions))=0, "Not Found", Logic for filtered data with/ without headers). ANother way to get around this is to just repeat the error message times the number of headers Also just a heads up: in the HFILTER function creation, you have the includeheadings argument before the ifemptyresults argument. In the actual created function they are reversed. I know many people try to follow the logic so it might be a good idea to fix that and reupload

@elchin9748

1. I am truly surprised how slow Excel develops in this regard, and this functionality should have been existed already some 5-10 years ago. 2. For those who has been writing at least VBA scripts (or in other programming languages), well, these are just news. 3. LAMBA can be defined only in the scope of ONE workbook, so if something serious, better to make it at least with VBA and reuse it in many workbooks/files. 4. Complex LAMBDA expressions will be complex to maintain and read in traditional Excel formula bar, with it's so underdeveloped editor. Thus, much easier and cleaner to code some lines in VBA or other languages, for complex cases (like the distance between two coordinate like shown in this video). 5. When we consult or make a better data automation solution for a business using Microsoft ecosystem, then we minimize/avoid writing any formulas in Excel. Instead use more convenient and faster DAX. 6. More advanced data and ML solutions, as you know are already done with Python/R ecosystems (we can even use Excel as an interface with RExcel) 7. Microsoft does not seem to invest well into Excel, as they do not develop for example formula editor for already some 15 years! And this is one example from the advanced user perspective. However they have much better editor in PowerBI and considering their VSC and VS experience, they could create one of the best editors also for Excel. 8. Considering the development of PowerBI ecosystem, Excel could regress into a table maintenance and very light reporting tool. 9. I find this new feature to be late, well, not surprising at all for experienced Excel users. Note: I do accept that Excel is the most advanced and convenient spreadsheet editor, but do not share sympathy for Excel being so open architecture (a lot of room for errors, slow performance and inconsistency). At this moment, do not understand such an excitement of the community for a "late" LAMBDA function. This is my opinion as an advanced Excel-and-beyond user. What do you think?
@otachuable
3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I am not seeing the benefit of using this new LAMBDA function. From what I know, Lambda in Python is used to define a function that would be repeatedly called, but not complex enough to go about creating a new function "object." I'd rather create a custom function with VBA than creating a multiline lambda function shown in the video here. It would be nightmare to maintain or fix it if something goes wrong. I feel like Microsoft is just jamming unnecessary features to a very basic and simple table calculation app, just so they can deter people away from going into the world of VBA, which they are trying their best to pull the plug out of since...forever ago.

@@HowToExcelBlog wrote a quick example a few years ago to do proper timezone conversion in Excel here medium.com/@bradbloomfield/making-excel-able-to-convert-timezones-49af6d18f8e6 I'm sure if MS was to do it the performance would be better. Not great if you need to call Python functions. I've also used it to expose scipy functions into excel. I can say xlwings works as advertised.

To say "it allows you to build your own custom functions" is true, but UDFs have always allowed you to build your own custom functions. I guess the difference here is that you can build LAMBDA functions on the front-end without having to open up the VBA editor to build your own user defined function?
@HowToExcelBlog

Yes, and use them in Excel online and mobile.

One HUGE drawback of UDFs is the disabling of multithreading for Excel. With UDFs your computer can only run 1 thread at a time, so it seriously slows down computation for worksheets with a large number of active cells.
@HowToExcelBlog

Good to know! Are you referring to VBA UDF's?
@graytonw5238
3 жыл бұрын
@@Ottmar555 Now that I didn't know, but I can certainly attest to it. I have UDFs built for certain workbooks and I can tell the workbook takes longer to recalc. If LAMBA functions are more efficient, then that would be a benefit, along with How To Excel's comment about the fact that UDFs can only work in local Excel workbooks, not online.
@Ottmar555
3 жыл бұрын
@@HowToExcelBlog Yes. To enable multithreading you need to write your UDFs externally in a .NET environment as an xll, for example ExcelDNA. But that adds another whole layer of complexity.

I believe LISP was the first programming language to use lambda functions. Remember using lambda functions in LISP programs back in 1988. Always a good idea to use the original name. Lambda functions are also called anonymous functions as neither have a name.

@@HowToExcelBlog The point in the ring click is to focus the viewer's attention so they can see exactly where you clicked and when. When it's lagging there for 2 seconds while you click 3 other places, it makes it absurdly difficult to focus on where exactly you clicked and when. It's not helping the tutorial at all. My comment on the other hand was straight, to the point, and specific. The exact opposite of your 4x too slow ring clicks.
