Honestly the Oly 17mm and the Pen F are born for each other.

Love the fact you are still using a Pen-F, one of the most beautiful classic camera ever made, with a lot of useful technology. The fact you can simulate any kind of film, black and white is absolutely gorgeous because you can set any kind of B&W profile you want; it is a chameleon camera. For street photography, I use the 12mm at F5.6 on hyperfocal: I get focus from 1 meter to infinite, in silent mode, I completely forget about focusing and it makes it the fastest street photography camera. It is so good I bought another one.

I've always love the PEN-F. Yes, it's an instant classic regardless. The BW dial is just so cool! Yes, this is ONE Olympus that I would never get rid of.

The PEN-F is smaller than a Leica M, the building quality is not far behind, stabilization allows to take handheld picture at 1/2s, the exposure can be compensated manually with the thumb without even having to move the eye from the EVF. I use it for street photography with the Zuiko 12mm, but I also get a beautiful soft bokeh using a 25mm SLR Magic. The out of focus is creamy as on the Noctilux. I also have the 35mm and 50mm SLR Magic, all T0.95, all for a reasonable budget, size and weight compared to FF. I don’t understand why people prefer bigger, heavier and more expensive cameras just to watch their pictures on a computer screen or on internet. Oh well, it is an endless discussion... I mimic the Kodachrome 25 for my color pictures, and I have my own presets for the B&W. I have NEVER been able to customize and control exactly the rendering I want with any other camera, Leica included. I suspect those who criticize the PEN-F did not really understood how to exploit what it offered. Even details like creating presets for each one of my lenses completely change the behavior of the S-IS stabilization and optimize it. I was shocked when Olympus decided to stop the production of this jewel... this is why I bought another one.

Manual focus with wide lenses is easy because the depth of field is deep. With small sensors like the micro 4/3 the depth of field is even deeper.

Regarding Laowa manual 17mm vs M Zuiko 17mm: given all the wonderful tech features of the Pen-f and new EM5iii, do manual lenses with no electronics represent enough value in the longer term compared to a similar Zuiko prime? I understand budgets and justification for saving on a fisheye WA, but a prime normal lens gets a lot more usage, imo.
@Red35Photography

Jeff, value is a strong word. There are tons of people out there prefer manual focusing lens. All modern lenses are focus by wire even in MF mode. If one prefers manual focus, nothing beats the tactile mechanical feel compare to electronic. Pretty much like some prefers to drive manual car and others like automatic. Also, manual lens tends to be easier to fix too.
@marike1100

Video shooters also prefer manual lens, focus-by-wire is not great for pulling focus. And the Laowa is a much sharper lens than the Olympus 17mm, so there’s the ultimate value right there.

Really sweet lens, and great price. I have to admit to becoming a bit of a Laowa fan-boy because they make lenses that are different to other manufacturers. This one reminds me of the Loxia series on Sony E-mount, but the Laowa is both smaller and a tenth of the price. Not bad for a lens that is just as sharp as the Loxias.

Rainy day and outdoors with Pen-f? Any problems with the lens & body components by end of the day?
@Red35Photography

No problem. Most non-weather sealed cameras like PEN-F and EM10 III are ok in light rain, also I tend to cover it with my jacket in between locations so it doesn't get soaked. Lens is fine too, just need to make sure it dries off completely before putting away as mentioned because it's a manual lens and no electronics inside. Any moisture gets into the lens can cause haze.

Hello, may I first say thank you for your videos. Very informative. I noted you are using the Pen-F "in the rain". Knowing the Pen-F is not weather proof, can I ask, is it safe to use this camera in a light drizzle. Or was it a borrowed camera and getting the video done was more important. I own the Pen F & I am paranoid about getting it wet. So can you advise how water proof this camera is or IS NOT? Thank you.

Great that we are still getting a stream of new MFT products to suit all budgets. With lots of these budget MF lenses flooding out of China I start to wonder if we will see a new Camera system emerge in the east. Lets face it the traditional big full frame companies are making rubbish now (as reflected in their sales figures) and most of their product is sourced in China anyway. I would really like to see a new budget system happen. So am I interested in this product myself? No, I am well catered for already. My street kit of choice is my Lumix GX9 with handgrip, Artisan & Artist black silk strap, Olympus 17mm f1.8 and 46mm black Leica style metal hood. Whole thing slips in my handbag for a long day in London (damn you Jimmy you have made me desperate to visit London again soon). For anybody with little cash this cheap lens would be perfect on the street; set to zone focus it would be faster in use than an AF lens. Have fun ;-)

Vici Martynov lol! You are bang on, there are a whole new lens manufacturing sector in China that design and male lenses. They are affordable and I will continue to source them and put them here. They are relatively few and far in between but they are definitely coming! Yeah if you have the Olympus 17mm lens, there’s no point of getting this. But if you haven’t but contemplating this focal length, this may be an option and what an option! Cheap but very capable.

I’m curious how much you use the PEN-F in the rain like this, and what you are or are not comfortable pushing it to do? I've used many 'non weather sealed' Olympus cameras in the rain and they are all ok. I wouldn't, however, use them in heavy rain. That'll be for EM5, EM1 or 1X. I use 1X for work as I know it will survive WWIII!
