I recall the fall of '81 when they began checking out new crews. RC would routinely come up from MSP to DLH to do practice instrument approaches. Late one afternoon, I talked my way into going around the radar pattern with them for 5 or 6 approaches. That aircraft was so new that it hadn't entered rev service. Each seatback had a plastic cover on it similar to a dry-cleaning bag. Yes, it reeked of that "new" smell!

I shot this video, with at the time, a VHS all in one camera. Big deal in those days. Yes the plane had the "NEW" smell. and the new paint and clean gear. now 35 years later i'm still working on the same type planes with Delta. MD88 & MD90., Thanks for the comment

What a nice plane. Loved the first Republic livery. My dad was a pilot for North Central/Republic into NWA and loved flying the DC9s. Too bad it got painted into the red tail livery. Long live Herman the Duck Delta should bring back some classic history/legacy liveries and paint a plane in Republic colors.

I like the video footage. As far as megers I started in 87, left in 2005. It's to bad there was allways the resentment though I had a zero in front of my clock # hangar 7 was the first bld I walked in to. Then the DC 10 was moved to Bay 4. My Dad was Hughes Airwest and he work in MSP for a short tour. Now I drive by on my way to work. And see the contrast of the new Delta.

In 1984 I had a Republic airlines airpass.I could travel anywhere on repuplic airlines for a whole month. It cost e $370.00. At the same time I had a Greyhound bus pass and could travel anyhere on greyhound busses for a whole month, which was so I could travel to the smaller towns. It cost me $300.00.

I Think Republic had 5 MD82's in their fleet. Those were tranfered to NW Airlines when NW aquired Republic in the mid 80's. One of those MD80's crashed at the Detroit Metro Airport in Aug., 1987. I wonder if the MD80 in this video is the same one that crashed?

rbm7101 No, this one went to Northwest and was eventually scrapped at DAB.

If my memory serves me correctly, RC had 8 total of MD80 airframes. One was lost post merger with NW in the DTW crash.

Yes, I read that some Southern employees still work for Delta!

There might well be a very small handful of Southern employees left at DL. I worked for both DL and NW from 1984-1990 while in college in MEM. I worked with guys who had started with Delta, Southern, Hughes AirWest, Northwest Orient, Republic, North Central, Chicago&Southern and some other long lost airlines that I may have forgotten. All of those airlines met up in some way or another along the way to form the present day Delta Airlines. It is not all that unheard of to run across an airline employee with 40-50 plus years of service.

Very cool...I only had the chance to work the MadDogs a few times before they were parked. Is there any footage of the last NW MD80? Wasn't it MDW-MSP?

What is the difference between this and a DC-9? I flew on a MD-88 today. Isn't that a similar plane?

Yes, the same airplane. Just a few small modifications here and there, but not much.

The MD-80 is longer than the DC-9 and has more powerful engines.
