In this episode, the team went on a backcountry fly fishing trip to a place that was rumored to have Rio Grande Cutthroat trout in a hard to reach area of the Gila National Forest.
This area is the most southern part of the state where you can catch this species. With the New Mexico Trout Challenge on their minds, the team packed in to cross the first fish off their list.
Catching this trout was no easy feat. It was a 8 mile hike into the wilderness through old burns to get to good fishing waters. The canyons and trail were covered in fallen trees, thorn brush, and many other obstacles. There was also the fear that the fish would no longer be in the stream.
After hiking in as far as they possibly could, the team finally found the elusive trout they were searching for. However, the trip went south after Nick took a bad fall and injured his knee.
Although the team was well equipped with fly fishing gear, the stream was hard to fish due to the thick brush and narrow stream. Next time, we may just use some fishing line tied to a branch!
Backcountry fly fishing can be an amazing experience for anyone that enjoys the outdoors. The New Mexico Trout Challenge also provides an incentive to go and enjoy the wilderness.
