During the end of May 2020, the New Mexico Rail Runner Express was utilizing a tonnage train on track between Albuquerque and Santa Fe. After doing track work, speed restrictions are put in place and gradually increased as tonnage moves over the track. In order to expedite that, NMRX has been running this heavy train. They use the requirement of one pass at 10 mph, 40 passes at 25 mph, and 40 passes at 40 mph. This is in lieu of using a track stabilizer.
The long train, which is basically three NMRX trains combined into one, passes though Bernalillo and Sandia on its way back to Albuquerque.
Lot's of paving is going on and BNSF continues to move asphalt cars to the Rosario plant north of Albuquerque. On June 2, we catch BNSF 2813 an EMD GP39M, and BNSF 1472, an EMD SD60M, running as light power through Bernalillo, NM.
With COVID 19 restrictions being relaxed, Amtrak is increasing the size of their consists. On June 2 we catch Amtrak 4, the eastbound Southwest Chief highballing through north Albuquerque.
