so true on demand outweighing supply... as the market experiences a wider and wider audience & consumer base, it won't matter if a super popular game has a graded pop of 100, 500, or even 2000 so long as there is sufficient demand among collectors and or an increasingly large number of collectors who want to purchase them. *It's been kinda crazy seeing that development of demand-based value as opposed to that rarity-based value lol* We'll continue to see that effect strongest among the main IPs like Mario, Zelda, Poke that prove to be the leading edge of these markets (we see those go for high prices first on any console before the other IPs catch up in price). It's why those Made In USA Wind Wakers sell for $500 to $1000+ in high condition despite Wind Waker being the most commonly graded GameCube game and readily available raw. It's just *that* in demand. Similar with sealed SMB3 being higher priced despite it being relatively common && the most graded NES game (iirc) lol

Yes it is really a bit odd to see that this sealed and graded video game market is almost solely driven by demand for popular stuff and not by rarity or supply. The really rare and obscure games that videogame collectors care for like Rule of the Rose or Xenosaga Episode 3 on Ps2, Samson on NES or Solatorobo: Red the Hunter on Nintendo DS almost get no attention in the sealed and graded market and i think this is mainly because the sealed and graded market is mostly driven by investors that often don't even know those obscure games and not really driven by gamers or collectors.
@GetTheGreg

It really is two distinct markets with distinct interests. You are right that a lot of those "collector games" go largely ignored comparatively
@boxwi

I think that's true just from a perspective of wealth distribution in a population. Not necessarily how you label the buyer (investor/gamer/collector/etc). There are just not many individuals who can afford and are willing to spend thousands on games, so naturally, less of them will have played or known about some rare titles.
@adamarzo559

Why does the price of the video games you collect matter? What you're describing is called a hype beast. Why would a collector care for the opinion of a hype beast? I don't care if something considered rare is $1 or $100,000. It's rare, it's in my collection. That's what matters. You're letting hype beasts and scum dictate what your collection is worth.

The only people making money from this silliness is the auction houses and the graders. With the auction fees and the mass production of these games the S&P is surely going to beat this "inverstment" category in the long term.
@Mitjitsu

It seems those bidding on the games are paying a premium based on the popularity of the franchise. I doubt there's going to a scarcity of these games in high grade in the future, but that's what the speculators are betting on. Right now I think there's a glut of unsophisticated investors and speculators entering the market, which is currently causing distortions.

That past couple auctions have been great to watch. While those prices are nowhere near past the hype period, but still high enough (and 100% yes super competitive) to show that the demand is out there. And it's reasonable money, too. Sure, I am part of that section where we collect and are broke, but these strike me as real market prices and while I can't afford them, feel ok recognizing this level of pricing. As a whole, the market where it is, I have been able to pick up more graded games thay I wanted and its actually plausible to get those higher end titles. Two years ago 4k for a madden... not a chance of getting in. Now? yeah, these are good days for both buyers and sellers. Great recap. I'm curious if there's a way to find out how many unique participants in the auction there were? We know the money numbers, now how many folks were in. Positive it wasn't only three dudes and a few bots, but could be used to reflect active interest.

I made it in the video! I agree with you that having several top of pop copies of Blue go up for sale during the same time period may have driven the price down at this auction. Regardless of whether we think this sale was a deal from an investment perspective, this game is my collection grail, and it was a deal in my eyes. I was prepared to bid up to $47k. Time will tell whether more and more high grade copies of red text Blue crop up to bridge the gap between the other variants, or if the past 6 months was an anomaly.

Played a few of them, but some Games were looking like new so i decided to open only the damaged ones. Games like SNES Zelda A link to the past and N64 Zelda Ocarina of Time were looking like straight out of the factory and still do. Now i am thinking about sending them to WATA but i am not sure if this company is the way to go. I want to have cool looking, graded versions and want to send them to a company with high reliability.

Hello Greg, I truly appreciate the effort you put into summarizing auctions and sharing them in short-form videos. It's incredibly valuable as it allows us to gain insights into what's currently performing well without having to spend 2-3 hours following the auctions ourselves. It's also great that you share your current market assessment, as well as your knowledge about different variations with us. For me personally, it would be fantastic if you could summarize and analyze a few notable eBay auctions every two weeks in a video. This way, we would always have a good impression of the current market, and we could better assess the advantages and disadvantages, as well as price differences, of certain auction platforms. A big thank you to you at this point, and best regards!

Greg, the only ppl selling these sealed games for a high profit are the ppl on the inside of the grading industry. There are not enough wealthy ppl (especially not with the way the US economy is headed) to ever buy the graded games in collections of average collectors. Those rich buyers will be funneled to connected "inside" sellers. The average collectors role is to make these graders rich by paying ridiculous fees for games you will not be able to make your money back on bc there are too many graded games and not enough wealthy ppl to pay those prices.

I've had no problems myself selling sealed games for multiple thousands of dollars! You either have the games that are worth that much, or you don't. There isn't much else to it! Definitely don't make the mistake of thinking *any* game is super valuable (or could be super valuable) just because you get it graded. Sealed games and prices that match are very nuanced.

Tax season, stock market and crypto extreme hype right now fuels stupid purchases like a 3rd print Mario w a common as day signature. And a lot of this modern stuff is early to market, so it goes high, no doubt, there are unsophisticated buyers out there. But as more of it hits the market and people realize just how damn many of them there are, the prices will drop. And not because people don't like them, but because it won't seem special to have one. This is flip zone, similar to anyone studied to the hobby knows there are tonnes of cibs to put together in nice shape, yet on HA n eBay 8.0s of common titles were going for big money, and still are on ebay. I don't see that continuing over time. Remember, the pop reports are still only updated through July of last year, and it's still only wata and an unofficial cgc, and wata doesn't show all of their cibs, and cgc shows NONE. And absolutely no VGA pops. This is just still way to early for me to buy into junk like PS5 and switch DVD style games that are produced n ship so well these days in such good boxes and pallets that nearly all are 9.8 a+s on up out of the box.

Just looking at the total sales/bidders for these two auctions and comparing them to previous auctions, it kind of seems like you are overstating it a bit. The sixth generation is the lowest sales total of any sixth generation auction and the Signature beat the last two by a bit but when you factor in the massive Zelda plus the extras like IPhone and video game art, the total amount of money seems to be about the same as previous signatures. The market might be seeing a bit of an uptick but it is a bit soon to say new money is entering the market when neither total bidders or total sales is really up.

The last 6th gen auction had 315 games in it vs 88 this time around. Average lot value was $725 last time vs $1050 this time. Auction totals in general aren't super relevant information because of how drastically different some of these auctions are built compared to one another, imo. Unique bidders might be a more interesting number to compare (total bids doesn't really help because again, number of lots total will highly influence that) - is that shown on HA?
@jacoblycan1815
6 ай бұрын
When you look at list of auction events and click previous events it lists all the events with sales total and number of bidder. I agree with you about the auctions being different but the signatures feel fairly consistent and lots of the examples in your video are not great for saying the market is up either as they have no comps and for the items that do have comps. Top 4 in sixth gen had no comps and 5th halved in price and 6th did go way up. Also you would expect the average lot value to go up because there is less “junk” in the auction to bring down the average and the buyers have less to bid on so items are less likely to slip through the cracks@@GetTheGreg
@GetTheGreg

@@jacoblycan1815 unless I'm mistaken here, I see it listing the numbers of unique bids, not the actual number of bidders that placed those bids. An interesting number, but auction size alone will influence the number of bids quite a bit (it was also influence unique bidders, surely). The last November signature had 80 more games in it than the February one. It also had 1200 more bids placed. I don't have the actual data layed out, but I assume that will always be the case. I agree with you about the average lot value also not being that relevant. I was just using it as a counter-example to imply things were going up, but I don't feel any of the auction total value, average lot price, or number of bids paint a great picture on their own. Unique bidders, new first time bidders, registrations to the website, etc. Data like that would probably be most telling for actually gauging if new people are entering (or more people participating than prior).
