As for the HoL, we have almost completely eliminated hereditary peers. People are given peerages on the basis of what they have done, like Robert Winston and Kelley Holmes. Lords only get paid for the days they actually attend. They attend when there is legislation to which they can contribute. I am very much in favour of that, so I don’t care about how many Lords there are. We need a wide range of expertise in the HoL. Appointing more Lords would not necessarily increase our costs. I think all Lords should be appointed on merit. We should EXCLUDE former MPs, PMs, and party donors. The HoL is a revising chamber. They scrutinise legislation and send it back to the commons for amendment if they think it has problems. They do a very worthwhile job. Those who want to abolish the whole HoL are ignorant. Rather than being like Thought for the Day, it would be much better to have no religion in the Houses at all.

Nonsense, we need a head of state who is above politics. The most democratic countries in the world virtually all have a system similar to the UK, such as Denmark, Sweden, Netherlands etc

I would think there are far more important things to debate than having your own seat, is this where our taxes are going, get real

Seems like very sensible comments to me! I'd never considered these issues, but yes on reflection the administration of government should be modernised.

@@lizwebstersbf I wouldn't worry to much as to what the Tories say, they are a spent force. I hope that the new Labour Government can pull the country out of the shit we are in. The quicker we rejoin the EU the better. Sadly, we will never have the power and influence we had. Are you the campaigner champing Save British Farming? If so why did the Farmers vote for Brexit? 😎

The Palace of Westminster is completely out of date for purpose it is quite simply a farce for the 21st Century. When my father was alive, he used to say that they needed to construct a building that was fit for purpose for the time we live in. Then he said, "they can open the Palace of Westminster as an attraction for tourists". The behaviour of the MPs in the chamber doesn't help either, they are supposed to be responsible adults at times it more represents a school playground. But as both parties have manged to stitch the system up for their own ends it will just be more of the same.
