Quick question about modern lasko box fans. Are there any differences between the modern Classic 3733 and the coolcolors in white? Walmart is selling both of them, but the coolcolors of course has a markup in price despite looking like the same box fan. Need to replace my 2 year old Mainstays Box Fan which seems the motor is getting weak already.

The B20200 and the B20201(3733) are basically the same, the only difference being the front grill ornament differs. The fan performs identically.

The Cool Colors units move more air because of the guard design, but internally I think they're more or less the same as the 3733. If you can afford it, I'd spend the extra money to get the Premium, Power Plus, or WeatherShield. Those models are significantly better than the 3733.

@@HPad2 and @JordanU the white Cool Colors as far as I know does not have the Wind Ring design. The only white box fan that would have the Wind Ring is the Weather-Shield box fan. I have never seen a white Cool Colors box fan with a Wind Ring paired with a standard 3733 body.

I have one of these running in my basement for air circulation, it runs slow on low and medium, but takes off on high and flies. Runs for days on end on low without an issue and it's almost inaudible. Mine is nowhere near NOS, was left behind by a tenant and it's missing tbe switch knob (and feet of course). Probably never been cleaned but it still runs smooth and moves decent air.

Interesting how a motor like this can wear out from little use. Makes no sense. I’m wondering if it has to do with the motor winding or maybe even something to do with the switch itself not being used. I know you were having issues with your other older 3733 with the switch giving out and that it already had an issue with the fan on medium. I honestly don’t know but taking apart the motor and giving the bearings and the shaft a good cleaning is a good starting point. I would say though that I would look at the motor windings as well while it’s apart and see if there is anything going on there. This is very interesting and due to this not being a PSC motor with a compositor. I may also be having this situation with a motor like this that is in a duracaft fan I own which takes seems to be having the same issue on all three speeds and not running up to speck.

The switch is completely busted on the other one but the medium still works properly, all the speeds do.

I think it's something to do with the bearings. I've noticed that the oil will become more viscous with age, and while it spins freely, it will cause more resistance the faster the motor goes. I've dealt with this many times, especially in low hour motors. Oftentimes, it's the thrust washers that end up gumming up the most from this gummy oil. I typically describe it as "gummy bearings" since the motor will still work reliably, just not correctly. Usually, when turning the motor shaft by hand, it'll be free turning but almost feel spongy, like trying to move something in water.
@JordanU

I agree 100%, I just don’t understand why it usually works OK on low and high but not medium. If it’s bearings, it should effect all speeds like it is here.

A potential guess for motor issues IMO could perhaps be the wire junctions of the motor leads and switch oxidizing and/or unseating over time? Leading to higher contact resistance and losses. Then again, i dont see how that could happen if it's essentially brand new.

If this were a high hours unit used in harsh conditions, I could see that as a possibility, but this has been stored in a climate controlled area and is in excellent condition. I don't see how that could have happened on this particular unit.

Perhaps it's the switch. They could have used two different suppliers and maybe the voltage going thru each setting encounters a resistance different that the other switch used at the time of manufacturing. You could try taking readings from the switch on this fan and your other properly working fan to compare.
@JordanU

There should be no resistance through the switch as it changes speeds by changing windings, but it’s worth checking. I suppose the contacts could have corroded or oxidized over time with no movement.

I think a good servicing to the motor and possibly revarnishing the windings should fix up the issue and make it run properly.

A possible reason why your fan is running slowly is due to rotor defects where it lost most of its magnetic properties. If you try to replace the rotor you'll probably fix the slowness issue.
@Fanscarsetc
3 ай бұрын
That honestly makes a lot of sense, maybe that’s why some weather shield/premium fans on youtube have been running unusually slow
@JordanU

That doesn't make any sense to me, I don't see how the magnetism could possibly just be disappearing over the years.

@@JordanU Trust me. If you swap the rotor you will probably fix it - the heat tends to affect cheaper rotors like this one over time. Or maybe the blades could be warped in such a way that the pitch increased? I don’t know. But be sure to try my suggestions to see what is the problem. The windings could be messed up if you tried both of those to no avail, since you mentioned the bearings are still ok.

Try re varnishing the windings over time the varnish will wear off resulting in the usual medium speed eventually shorting its possible all three of them in this motor are tying to short. The copper could have a thin layer of oxidation that could cause this too.
