This is the best version. Gritty, dusty, raw, perfectly balanced... transition chords are more fluid than in later more metallic versions. Timeless. A masterpiece.

Yes, the death of Ian Curtis was certainly tragic. As a child of the 80's New Order is an outstanding band and an important part of memories of my youth. I often wonder what they would have been with Ian Curtis or perhaps they never would've been at all. However, as you said they are a miracle.

This is why events unnerve me, They find it all, a different story, Notice whom for wheels are turning, Turn again and turn towards this time, All she ask's the strength to hold me, Then again the same old story, Word will travel, oh so quickly, Travel first and lean towards this time. Oh, I'll break them down, no mercy shown, Heaven knows, it's got to be this time, Watching her, these things she said, The times she cried, Too frail to wake this time. Oh, I'll break them down, no mercy shown, Heaven knows, it's got to be this time, Avenues all lined with trees, Picture me and then you start watching, Watching forever, forever, Watching love grow, forever, Letting me know, forever.

Wetlands are neither land nor water, they are what is in between land and water. Ceremony is that place Joy Division, it is Ian's spirit alive after his death and the remaining members of Joy Division grieving Ian's death but trying to soldier on in the midst of that grief. The reason this so g hits people so deep and so hard is that sooner or later) we all lose something or someone we love and must find our way forward beyond the loss

New Order re-recorded "Ceremony" and released it as their first single because they all hated the single that the producer and the engineer had mixed. The guitars were all muted, you can hardly hear Peter Hook's bass, and Ian Curtis's lyrics are almost impossible to decipher unless you know them beforehand. Bernard Sumner had to get a hold of the master tapes and separate out the vocal track, slow it down, listen to it repeatedly, and transcribe it. Ian Curtis hated the single too. So, this is what Joy Division wanted "Ceremony" to sound like, and New Order did it to both honour Ian and to correct the fuck ups of the producer and the engineer. After this, New Order released "Everything's Gone Green," and "Temptation," (the 12" version of which is my favourite New Order song,) both of which were complete departures from the sound of "Ceremony." They re-recorded "Ceremony" for "Substance 1987" and it was radically different to this version. :)

Ian Curtis never heard the single version, so i don't know how he could hate it.

@@michaelfenton3923 I stand corrected. The rest of the band hated the sound of the original version of Ceremony as Joy Division, and so re-record it as their first single as New Order. I love this song but your title is actually wrong unless you were talking about the 1st the 1st time it was released by new order. You see the band used to go by another name until they had their lead singer kill himself oh because he was dealing with epilepsy andother issue and couldn't handle it anymore. The original version of ceremony was actually put out by a band called Joy Division. It's a slower version of the song but I think that new order did it Justice and think it was pretty cool that they took a song written by the band but song by their mate who was now dead and honored him and honored him by redoing this song in the new band. Pretty sweet

original version ??...sheesh Joy Division (which later became New Order after singer died) did it before that and they redid it....Joy Division has three recorded versions of "Ceremony" in existence. The first is a live version, available on the Still album, from their final concert at High Hall, Birmingham University on 2 May 1980. The second, available on the Heart and Soul four-disc box set is from a rehearsal tape made in April/May 1980. The third is a version recorded at the soundcheck on the afternoon of 2 May 1980.
