A new outbreak of fire ants has been detected in the Darling Downs region of Queensland amid a new call for a review of government biosecurity funding.
Modelling from The Australia Institute shows fire ants would cost the economy $2 billion a year, reduce agriculture output by up to 40 per cent and create 650,000 more medical appointments.
The government has spent $690 million on fire ants since 2001 to contain and eradicate the species following an outbreak in South East Queensland.
A Senate inquiry has made 10 recommendations in a report which calls for additional funding.
It comes as a community member reported finding multiple nests on a property in Oakey, near Toowoomba in Queensland.
