They have little rubber squares that look like square pavers at places like Home depo. They're great to have especially if you are older or have health issues because they are so light but look like the real thing! And since they are made for outdoors they will last for years!

I am a huge fan of first putting down cardboard boxes and anchoring them on the edges with some sort big rocks, Then covering the whole cardboard space with Cedar playground chips. I do this for all the pathways in my garden and weeds are so easy to pull when they do come up through the cedar playground chips. I would imagine they would be good to land on from the slide as well, As this is what the parks department in all of our local playgrounds. And schools. I end up adding I end up adding new pieces of cardboard and more cedar chips every few years, but you never have to pull up the cardboard because it just starts down overtime and you can just layer the next pieces over it if you want to. But honestly it last for years and weeding is so nice. Weeds just pull out so easily from the cedar playground chips. Weeds grow like crazy here in the Northwest, so lots of people have come to this same conclusion. Cedar chips for the win!

Rather than using a tarp under the wood hips you can get permeable membrane on a roll. The rainwater can drain through but it still stops the weeds taking root underneath. Now you’ve got on top of the situation the lady needs to keep a weed killer spray to hand so she can quickly zap any that show up again.

You remind me of myself. I am stubborn & determined too. By any chance do you have German ancestors? Can I make one suggestion? I heard a quote awhile back, and I'm not sure who it was by, but it was something to the effect of the Earth is modest, cover her, or she will cover herself. If you want to leave open area for kids' stuff put some mulch down, or the weeds will keep coming back. And salt or baking soda in the cracks of the pavers will help keep weeds from growing back in non-growing areas.
