the margins to be successful at the highest level in swimming is what make the sport untouchable, you'll spend years training 6 times a week + morning practices to shave off 4 hundredths of a second at a meet and the money/status from doing it ain't good. only other sport as brutal as swimming imo is boxing where you need to be an obsessive autist to rake in any benefits (still love swimming though)

Nevertheless, it was a great experience for her and the best thing is that she learned time management, which you absolutely need to balance school and swimming competitively. My advice to parents? Realize that there is a 1 in 100,000 chance your kid will go to the Olympics and other than driving them to practice, there is nothing you are going to improve those odds.

Jesse is 100% correct in the fact that the pay Wall issue is a huge problem and one that I think will become a much bigger issue over the next 5 to 10 years. I’ll pay $32 a month for KZitem premium (a hell of a lot more expensive than most of the other streaming services), I mainly so I don’t have to look at ads but also I feel that that should be helping to subsidise the content that I am consuming on the platform. The fact that a lot of excellent content creators with high subscriber numbers still can’t make a financial venture out of what they are doing, or the revenues have deteriorated is a direct reflection back to KZitem, who are now charging more than ever for their services. If we all simply just put up with people moving their content individually behind a pay wall and start paying five dollars here or $10 there then all we are doing is rewarding the large platforms who are ultimately screwing us all over and trying to have their cake and eat it too. People need to push back against this and put more pressure on platforms like KZitem to share a greater piece of the pie with its content creators. Financially, all these little increments of subscriptions start to add up, and before you know it, you could be forking out hundreds of dollars a month and it’s very difficult to track in a meaningful way without paying for another subscription Service to track it 🤦🏻♂️

I know you guys are big fans of the NorCal guy, but c'mon... his comparison testing videos are laughable. You cannot make valid conclusions without controlling for essentially all variables, which he doesn't do. In his recent handlebar video, he says everything is the same, except for bar width, but when you look at the two bikes, the wider bars have a bit of cable exposed under the bars, while the narrow bar bike does not, and the headunit is above the bar/stem on the wide bar bike, but it's inline on the narrow bar bike. This two things alone could easily account for twice the difference in time savings he found. It's just rubbish.

Ditto the tyre video, just shows on that wheelset there wasn't much difference in it on that bike and how they rode [did they account for system weight on the downhill test blah blah blah] --- on the other hand, hasn't peak torque been collecting actual measured data from real world rides for ages now on wheelsets and tyre combos & watt savings?

Regarding the comment / question about being told weight doesn’t matter aero does. Like a lot of things, there is a bit more nuance to it. Aero matters more than weight until you get over 6°, and then weight becomes more of a factor and aero less as the gradient increases. However, there is even more to it than those because if you are on a rolling course without much climbing, or only one or a two short climbs over 6°, aero is more of a factor, but also consider that depending on the gradient, the weight difference of a light vs a heavier bike can be marginal. If you aren’t racing, it really doesn’t matter.

Okay, from a U.S. perspective, yeah, it is disappointing that the past half-century has not brought about a true lift-off for cycling as a widely-embraced sport. I think ball sports and video games and fitness apathy won out among the general populace and O well, at least we continue to enjoy lots of highs for our sport and community and those will hopefully draw new adherents. Yet, curiously, not all ball sports have won over the people. In 1971 as a public school student in California, the sport of soccer was suddenly part of my school-day experience in PE class and a year later I even played it in an after-school league, my one season of organized school-sports participation. And one of the schools we played had mostly Chicano boys and O my, I learned how passionate and skilled they were at soccer, lol. And I admired that, it was great and no worries as I was always a Sting-Ray rider, that was my thing. And big picture, although soccer got all that official boost in public school systems, it is still no more than niche among the general public and it probably remains as it was half-a-century ago, not much here in the States, huge elsewhere in the world--sort of like pro road cycling.

Red bull is dope because they platform stuff that 12 year olds think are cool, Flugtag, boxcar racing, extreme sports, etc… Their drink is perfect for topping off on carbs and caffeine too mid-ride.

I agree, with regards to why Red bull are wanting to be involved with cycling teams, the other is the TDF documentary and the possibility of this super league I'm sure they'll have a few reasons

Yes, I would lik to see a comparison from Norcal using a the 1990s colnago C50or the Caad 12 that David Arthur reviewed against a Cervelo C5 . However, both with a set of 50mm wheels (Hunt maybe) with the same tubless 28mm tyres and both with thew same width handlebars

Red Bull would want bmc bike as their bike as they have invested in the designing of that. BMC doesn't have a team right now , so I guess this makes sense

Interesting chat about paywalls. On this subject I got to thinking about the chat you had recently with Lantern Rouge - raised some interesting points about being at the TDU. Not wanting to bother the riders pre race... Feels to me there is a difference in content between enthusiasts with YT channels or pods and "journalists". I can see why journalists want to go behind a paywall (eg Escape Collective) because they provide slightly different content and they have access to riders, mechanics, team management, race organisers etc. They need to be at the races to make their content work. The enthusiast (aka pundit?) by contrast usually do not need to be at the races but they know their stuff and and nerd out very deeply about the races eg LR. I'm a tragic, I consume a lot of content but the experience I get from The Cycling Podcast at the grand tours is very different to that from LR or the Nero Show. Maybe akin to the difference between a broadsheet vs a tabloid newspaper - if you know what I mean.

Paywall is fine by me, but only our favorite ones. But you’re right, if everyone did it, we’d all lose in receiving and creating content.

I love it when people talk about “the algorithm” like they work for Google. Berm Peak “the algorithm likes long form content, over 20 minutes” Meanwhile, KZitem is pumping billions into Shorts that are vertical format and under 1 minute. Hmm???

Just in case Chris did not see the '23 Ironman Championship Docu-series (5 Episodes) - kzitem.info/news/bejne/qamc1nqXb6yelqg They did a nice job of splitting the Disciplines - Swim - Bike - Run into separate Episodes + Into & Finale. Redbull sponsors a few of the Triathletes including some of the Big names - Women & Men. Timing - sure it takes time to edit as the video work is outstanding - also winter in Northern hemisphere = more indoor time to watch

Smart to force the customer to also buy shoes and advertise as a system, until they don't make these shoes anymore because of a new pedal design.. Also what happens if the shoe underside gets walked on the street, how will it affect firm engagement with the pedal?

The question should be 'where are narrow bars faster?' I imagine they're much faster in strong headwinds or on fast descents.
@NikeonaBike

4 seconds over 15 minutes is 16 seconds over an hour. That's not a ton, but its literally free speed if you have the option to get narrower bars when you buy the bike since it costs no extra money. Why not go narrower if all else is equal?

Not to mention that he didn't test in the aero hoods position where the biggest ergonomic gains are made on narrow bars. The experiment was faulty anyways, as he didn't adjust stem lenght even though narrower bars reduce your reach. 1hr road bike time trial with 42cm bars vs 37cm bars with 10mm longer stem would definitely show a bigger difference.
@NoluckBear

Well the test protocol has a margin of error of like 10%, just like his tyre test video. So the results are completely useless. Even if everything else was perfect, the power meter is only accurate to about 1.5%. How on earth do you expect to get accurate test results just riding a loop once and pressing a stop watch?

Chris - No shade here, I think you just misunderstood that comment about Keegan. I know the exact spot you're referring to, it was Finsty saying how Keegan just races, he doesn't have a podcast, etc.. He meant that as a complement, not a criticism. Lachy had similar stuff about how there's a reason Keegan never flats and how he thinks about every little part on his bike. I've heard him on podcasts discussing his set up and it's very true. The guy runs slower tires on purpose so he won't flat and still carries multiple tubes, plug tools, co2's. The amount of extra weight he brings with him just so he won't be stuck ever is crazy. Imagine if he brought one CO2 and one tube and ran faster tires what he could do. Anyway, that was just the guys saying he is singularly focused on preparation, training, and racing. And that's why they aren't beating him very often. I read it all as praise.
