Come on! We were almost done!
The concept does work, but unfortunately we forgot to account for the outwards push of not only the bridge, but the mountains as well. Not enough weight was put in the middle and this caused the entire setup to split and collapse in under a second. We thought that by adding hundreds of planks of weight we could counteract the outwards push of the arch, but it wasn’t enough to stop the entire mountains from moving. It turns out that the scaffolding under the bridge wasn’t supporting the bridge-it was actually a weight in the middle of the build to keep the mountains from moving outwards. Once we removed part of it, our build reached its demise. It was an unfortunate end but it was nonetheless one our most aesthetically pleasing builds. This build was planned for today with West Virginia Day in mind, celebrated every year on June 20 to commemorate our state’s induction into the Union. We chose to build West Virginia’s most famous landmark, the New River Gorge Bridge (which also happens to be our channel’s logo). One day, we might give it another try (maybe Bridge Day).
