And the RPG mechanics make this game great for casual play. You can essentially level up your hero and get OP gear which will destroy the AI. Saved progression is sorely lacking in most RTS games.

Regarding the RTS genre, does Artosis know about Warlords Battlecry (WBC on short) series ? I truly love them, especially WBC 2. WBC 2 has 12 (yes, twelve) races, and they are quite different, unlike AoE. WBC 3 even upped that to 16. The thing about WBC is that it has RPG elements, kind of like Warcraft 3 campaigns, where you first create a hero and then go to battles with that hero. And this was before WC 3. Unfortunately, balance is totally out of the window with all 3 games of the series. Competitive WBC was usually played as a mirror match, with no heroes. And in general, all 3 games could use with a lot of polish, in all areas. However, what I like so much about them is the refreshing amount of mechanics and options it gaved. Heroes have attributes and skills, but these are soo much more than just damage and health. For example, each hero has a radius around it where it can affect things - convert buildings (mines especially, but also enemy buildings) and give morale boosts to your units. The range of this command radius depends on one of its skills. How much (if any) it boosts the morale of your troops - that's another skill. In total, there are 10 skills. Besides that, units have their own experience and can level up, but it's much more limited (fixed points and levels, and they get fixed stats increase). There are different damage types, which in WBC 3 also correspond to different critical strike bonus effects (piercing damage - ignores armor, slashing damage - do a cleave, crushing damage - stun the opponent, fire damage - set the target on fire etc). And the combat mechanic is also quite interesting, even though it might be a bit random. Each unit has a "combat" stat. If it does a ranged attack, the combat value determines how accurate the shot is. In melee, the combat difference is taken into account. Have a higher combat that the opponent (and by a bigger margin) - higher chances of scoring critical strikes and death blows. Have a lower combat than the opponent and there's a higher chance of "missing" (which actually does 1 damage) or "grazing" (do only half damage) the opponent. Also, for each unit (and the buildings which create units) you could set an AI type. So you could have some units constantly scouting the map, not engaging on fights. You could have some units random wander the map, attacking everything hostile they encounter - very useful in chasing hidden units. You can have a powerful, valueable unit set to return to the base when it reaches 25% of health, so you can keep it alive, especially since you can have several units tied to the hero, and able to take them in other games as well. There's a lot of small little things like what I mentioned above, that make the game very ... immersive ? and fun to play. I remember having fond memories of the same kind with 7Kingdoms too. Then 2000s came and RTS went basically dead, with barely any new games and ideas. Sigh. I'll try Spellforce III though.

This game is nice because you can play "spellforce 3 versus" for free and have access to ladder or unranked. Only downside is you get a 1 time random of either humans/orcs/elfs and are locked after that first random, to play other races or whatever you want each game you have to buy the 15$ upgrade
@guerrilla5002

@@capresenooj4359 you mean the default game only gives u one faction for multiplayer?
@blahblah3775
3 жыл бұрын
@@guerrilla5002 okay, let me break it down. Firstly. The game being "more rpg than rts" only applies in the single player and even then you'll be building hundreds of units. In multiplayer it's true rts with hero mechanics. WHAT YOU GET FOR WHAT YOU BUY SpellForce 3 BASE GAME. Buying this gives you access to the first campaign. Orcs Elves Humans. SpellForce 3 first expansion. Soul harvest. Gives you Soul Harvest campaign, access to Orcs, Elves, Humans, Dwarves, Dark Elves. SpellForce 3 Second Expansion. Fallen god. Gives you Fallen God campaign, access to Orcs, Elves, Humans, Trolls. SpellForce 3: VERSUS: the New F2P multiplayer only version of the game. Acts as a hub for both DLC and the Base game to be able to play their factions together. Before, you could only play Fallen God/Soul Harvest MP with people that had the same expansion (example. You wouldn't be able to have Trolls and Dark Elves in the same game, fallen god, soul harvest, and the Base game could not cross over, now they can) SpellForce VERSUS has a 15$ pack you can buy that lets you unlock ALL Factions for use in it's Multiplayer ONLY without the expansion campaigns. Otherwise, you're assigned a random faction to play in matches as a sort of "demo". DO NOT BUY THIS if you intend on getting the expansions already, if you have the Base game and want access to the DLC factions without buying the DLC's or playing their campaigns, then I'd say get it, however the Campaigns are really good. Buying Any of the Expansions automatically unlocks all their factions etc in Versus. If you already have the Base game, you will permanently have Orcs Elves and Humans unlocked in Versus. Rather than being assigned a random faction. Same goes for both Expansions, if you own them their respective factions are added to Versus for you permanently. They also have plans to allow you to launch all of the Campaigns from versus if you want.

Looks a lil much. Imo a way to make a good rts is to add one big new mechanic that you focus on and keep everything else simple. When there's 5 different types of resources and way too many options the game becomes too slow and overcomplicated imo.
@smnvalex
3 жыл бұрын
@Qimodis i think YOU'RE not getting it. A mechanic is whatever the game developer thinks of. All the best games have one main mechanic or concept that the game focuses on. Rts games are very complicated yes but there's a difference in complicated in the sense that there are so many mechanics that learning them takes hundreds and hundreds of hours just at a basic level vs mechanics that can be understood fast but have boatloads of depth. The races are cool and all in this game but if you spread yourself too thin none of them will work. There's a saying that I'm sure you've heard: " a mile wide but an inch deep". I don't have enough time invested this game to judge it fairly but from what I've seen of it that's the feel it gives off to me and many othey players as well. A game doesn't have to be hard to understand and get into for it to not be complicated. Using starcrsft as an example if you look at blink and use it once you completely understand the ability and there's nothing complicated about it, but the use it can provide is near infinite and you can use it creatively like the pros do. Thats what i mean when I say you need to keep it simple. And when I say the game looks "slow" I'm saying so because it looks like the micro vs macro cycle is just really slow compared to other popular games such as starcrsft or to a lesser degree age of empires 2. But that's just a preference thing
@natenatenate10

@Qimodis I think you might be confused here--successful games such as SSBM, Portal, Zelda, Final Fantasy, Auto-Chess, and begrudgingly, Fortnite. SSBM: The most successful sandbox fighting game which thrives off of unique physics mechanics such as wavedashing, wavelanding, moonwalking, dash-dancing, and also L-cancelling (halves your landing lag). The skillcap is similar to Brood War because there's so much freedom given to a player and it allows them to do just about anything if they can handle the high apm inputs. Portal has the mechanic of teleporting through planes and revolutionized puzzle-solving. Each Zelda game adheres to a their main structure but each one offers unique mechanics. Majora's mask has the masks and the 3-day timer, Oracle of Ages and Seasons utilized time and seasons, and BOTW had the magnet/stasis combination which allowed for players to come up with their own solutions to problems. Final Fantasy, similar to Zelda, has a formula for each of their games but introduce unique mechanics to each game. The notable ones being FF8 and the magic card/weapon system, FF12 with the license board and time-based combat/open-world instead of treating encounters as previous iterations did, and tactics had their grid-based combat. Auto-Chess became very popular despite its simplicity. Combining 3 of the same units creates a 2* unit and 3 of the same 2* units becomes a 3*, with each being exponentially stronger than the last. Along with this, each unit had a class & set-bonus, and consecutive victories/defeats gave more gold and each 10 gold you held onto became an extra gold for the next round. Fortnite had that building mechanic which allowed it to stand apart from other battle royales. There's always a formula a game follows according to its genre (RPG, puzzle, FPS, RTS, etc.) but the ones that introduce unique mechanics stand out.

Looks good but definitely something not popular by today's standards. Too complicated, too many options. It will take anyone 3 months to know what is going on. Even Tosis can't explain it very well and he's been trying it out. Sorry if you are a developer this is what i think.
@lordlopikong6940

Ye but that's what makes an RTS special. Taking out the complicated mechanics and huge learning curve will just turn any RTS into a moba. I do agree that it's not popular with todays standard. People want slow brain games where it's super easy to start of and not complicated when it's your first time playing. But removing that from the RTS genre will just turn it to a different game itself. What a dilemma.

If this game has replays. It's way more effecient to just copy good players. Your current method takes 1000 hours and it only really works if your'e smart. For example take someone who doesn't play chess. Let him play 1000 hours. If I read 2 high level books. I'll be ahead of him in knowledge. Unless he's smart and can realize things without being told which is rare
@mahkra_
3 жыл бұрын
I think what Artosis suggests should come before the replay-watching, particularly as it's an RTS where you have to develop mechanical proficiency as well as knowledge. I think watching replays and copying advanced strategies would be a later step; I don't think Artosis is suggesting that one should not learn from pros. Even in chess, I think playing some games even without knowing any strategy to develop familiarity with how the pieces move would be a better starting point than reading books about it. After you've developed a strong neural framework through interacting with the game, even clumsily, then you'll have a foundation for the strategies from the books to build on.
