Secondly, you would have to have been living under a rock the past year not to know that the vaccines do not appreciably reduce carriers of Sars Covi2. It was misleading. Citing ONE researcher who concluded that lockdowns and precautions did nothing to curb the spread is absolutely false, and that isn't what science is. If no steps were taken before there was adequate medical understanding, treatments, vaccines, and room in hospitals, deaths would have easily been in the millions as the nation caught it all at once. And all those who's lives were saved in hospitals equipped with plenty of ventilators, respirators, and PPE's would have been lost if all facilities were allowed to wildly exceed capacity as the tidal wave hit all of America in the space of a couple of months. Having to bury millions in mass graves deposited out of dump trucks is not a good look for the leader of the free world.

It's analysis done by three ECONOMISTS, one of whom works for the Hopkins economics department. The other two are economics profs from Sweden and the Netherlands. Secondly, it's a "working paper," not peer-reviewed at all. Third, they totally redefine what a "lockdown" is in the paper. For example, wearing a mask is considered a lockdown. And finally, almost all of the Covid data is from 2020 before the Delta and Omicron variants. It is a completely flawed study with an ideological bias. But Lockdowns were effective at doing their jobs. They keep infection rates down in countries that observed them appropriately so that healthcare systems didn’t buckle under the strain of hospitalisations and deaths, which would have lead to many many more people dying needlessly. I know that life has very little value in the day and age of “muh freedumbs”, but I think we can all agree that people dying in their thousands every day is not a good thing. I don’t know what the situations with Lockdowns are in the US, but it is still seemingly an issue so Ill assume Lockdowns are still in place … but in the U.K. lockdowns have been made fairly irrelevant because a massive vaccine and booster effort drastically reduced the risk of death to where lockdown measures and more weren’t required. If health experts determine that the US still needs lockdowns, that in all likelihood a product of a failures elsewhere .. and it’s pretty clear to see why the US is still piling up the bodies and edging closer to 1,000,000 dead citizens since the start of the pandemic. Needless vaccine hesitancy has cost many many lives, and misinformation and the plain old ignorance on vaccine efficacy is clear for all to see .. booster rates in the U.K. = 55%, in the US = 27%. Maybe if you want your freedom back, take the harmless, obviously beneficial, free , quick and easy vaccine.

Just because a lockdown didn’t work in a country with a government that objectively failed to implement and a society that largely failed to respect it, doesn’t mean lockdowns in theory and literally in practice don’t work. The US had one president who said it would amount to no more then a few deaths and suggested drinking bleach, and another president that said wrongly that the vaccines will stop you from getting covid after Dr Fauci had said the opposite before vaccine rollout had ever began. Just because the government of a country failed at preventing the spread doesn’t mean preventative measures are pointless. @@swingersonian Bill is criticizing how after 9/11, the government did an overreaction to the issue and built the "security theater", when other countries just did more precise action to fix the terrorism issues they had. He compares it to the pandemic, mainly now, in how things are getting better, but it seems like government is overreacting and pretending we're still in February of 2020. My comment was more on the "why" of the overreaction in 2001. That it was less to do with keeping the country safe and more to do with the opportunity to funnel loads of federal dollars into private companies...ones who likely donated big to the campaign war chests of elected officials. I can't say if this is similar, and suddenly big pharma is making loads off our federal dollars, but it's more about the modern "why" that the US government overreacts. I think many red states are playing a dangerous game in playing the "freedom" card when it comes to civic duty in being vaccinated, or the "deep state" nonsense...but I also feel like many blue states are playing like it's 2020, when they should be really examining if they need to be so cautious. Plus I still feel like the country needs to show some tough love to those who can be vaccinated, but won't vaccinate. Make them wait hours on end for a bed while a cancer patient gets a bed quickly.

the point is - ADAPT when more information comes to light. Blue states and Biden's administration refuse to PIVOT after 2 years of lockdowns, masks, school closures, etc. when it's well documented that those efforts do very little to prevent the spread of the virus, let alone deaths. Same with the vaccines....people were sheltering in place until a vaccine was available as though it would be the holy grail. Well, it's not. people still get infected and still transmit it to others. So, why are all of these purity tests and constant fear-mongering allowed to continue? It's not about health at this point - it's about power and most definitely their Pride. It has evolved into a two tier class thing....employees have to wear masks (vaxed or not) while elites at the same venue do not - that has been played out over and over again as recently as the NFL playoff game last week in LA. 80k plus people in an enclosed building in a county that requires masks at all times for kids to attend school, and employees to work - but all those that can afford the tickets to the game or the suites - you don't have to abide by those same rules (which included the fricking Governor of the State and the Mayor of LA). Why? If you are referring to the white supremacy truck convoy and protest, it has nothing to do with mandates. They don’t represent Canadians. It’s just racist assholes harassing hospital workers in palliative care hospitals, and racists defacing war memorials and harassing soupkitchens demanding food, and blaring horns all day, while throwing trash everywhere.

As a Liberal and someone who deeply loves logical solutions based in science and reason, I completely agree with this: " If you are the most vulnerable and/or unvaccinated, it would make the most sense to protect those people and have everyone move back to normal life". It was much different in 2020 when we didn't have treatments or vaccines but now we do.

No it’s been the same since 2020. Vaccinated or not, the disease is still transmissible. Also, the Covid deaths have been inflated. Anyone who went in for something else and had/caught it would be marked as a Covid death. Let’s be honest here, those numbers are elevated.

What's even more bizarre is that I'm also a liberal, and when I said this exact same thing to a friend who I thought was a classic liberal but apparently part of the new left that has gone off the deep end.. @Free Thinker Just because Bill and I may agree with some of your views regarding CoVid policy... doesn't mean we are on your side. The corpratist Dem establishment is bad, but Republicans, once in office are just as corrupt and do everything they can to further enrich the wealthy at the expense of everyone else.

As a nurse, we appreciate that people did make an effort to slow the spread. You did not bring up this important point. The burnout in the hospitals is real. The patients and families suddenly becoming Google physicians do say crazy shit to people who spent yrs learning how to save their asses. It is the Practice of medicine (yes, still practicing, I get it), but slowing the spread of any communicable disease in a pandemic is greatly appreciated by hospital staff. Once you have worked at a hospital, you will know this. It’s a stressful enough job without having to make choices on who gets the bed and who dies stemming from nursing shortages and overcrowded hospitals. Just asking for some consideration of this.
