Russian tactics have been clear for quite some time. The Russians avoid frontal attacks against fortified positions by launching continuous flanking maneuvers before assaulting them to gain footholds. The Ukrainians don't have the manpower and material to defend each fortified area long enough to reinforce from other areas.

Even though Russian gains are fairly modest so far, the sudden lack of pro-Ukraine reporting in Western media points towards Russia being on the cusp of significant advances and perhaps a sign of Ukrainian exhaustion. An interesting similarity to the Winter War in Finland, 1939 /40. I'm curious to see if we will also see a repeat of the Continuation War 1941/44 when Finland joined Germany for Operation Barbarossa. Unless President Macron is voted out in the next French presidential election, I believe France will play the German part if that's the case. Amazing how history repeats itself. The US will probably also repeat its past by remaining on the sidelines until Europe is bled white, then join the war when the outcome is more or less decided then declare themselves the winners!
@Indaryn
4 ай бұрын
Macron is on his second term so he can't be re-elected. His party is in shambles both internally and from public opinion, I highly doubt they'll be relevant next election. Besides, you underestimate the political tension in France right now. What you've said implies the French government has the support of its population, its National Assembly and high ranking officials which it does not. If the centre forced us into a war, it would trigger peace riots like none other. Both the far-left and far-right oppositions (even elements of the right) would immediately vote of no confidence Macron's regime into the void and trigger re-elections for a more competent leader (which is most likely gonna be a far-left vs far-right election at this point). As for the Armed Forces, their officials have expressed numerous times their concerns and disagreement with Macron's warmongering attitude. Especially cause they know they would be the first on the front lines to get absolutely destroyed by Russian forces and its superior war economy 😂

The battle of Krinky is a side show meant to draw Russian attention away from the Zaporizhia, Kherson, Donetsk and Luhansk fronts. This is a similar strategy as to what led to the Kherson and Kharkiv counter offense. The best Russian troops were concentrated and pinned in Kherson, then Ukraine struck north. The Russians, I assume saw this, because they are now forcing the Ukrainians to fight in many areas across the front line. The bridge head at krinky is also, I believe a morale boost for Ukrainians, during this time when Ukraine is losing ground.
@stevealba56

The term fortification is always used even when there are simple trenches on the ground the word as a significance of something strong and I doubt the ukrainian were able to pour down such an amount of reinforced concrete behind the historical line of defence centered on Avdivka and krasnohoritka the issue for the russian is represented mainly by FPV drones....
@PersonalityMalfunction
4 ай бұрын
From a military perspective, trenches are very effective fortifications. Trenches, AP mines and barbed wire has withstood an awful lot more than bunkers, guard towers and machine gun nests ever did. Thing about trenches is they only work if there is rock solid infantry inside them, something Ukraine may be running out of.

Do you think that the recent decision by Russian authorities to declare Ukrainian leadership, such as Zelensky himself, as criminals, will have any significant relation to military operations in the near future?
@TranceElevation
4 ай бұрын
After 21 of May, Zelensky won't be anymore "officially" president of Ukraine as there were no elections. It means he becomes a simple military target.
@igory3789
4 ай бұрын
I think it will not have an impact on the way Russia carries out its operation , but it will impact political games around this conflict. Russia sends a clear message that negotiations with Zelensky are impossible from now on. Moreover, any terrorist attack or other criminal action against Russia or russian civilians will be added to Zelensky’s criminal charges list and at a certain point he might be called a legitimate military target by Russia.
@user-xm7yg1pv7m

I am from Russia and I will explain a point that is incomprehensible to a Western observer. This is a signal from the Kremlin to Zelensky that his time is over and there will be no negotiations with him personally. He and his government are advised to rush to evacuate to Canada or Argentina.

@user-xm7yg1pv7m but he won't lol, all this does is strengthen resolve of the ukrainians, also points to the fact that russias goals are more than taking parts of Ukraine. To be fair though, the russians if anything were in the farthest outskirts of Nevelske, you are probably the only mapper I've seen that marked Nevelske under russian control which was never confirmed by anyone. Still a success by the ukrainians that pushed them out from their small foothold in the village, but still at least 95% of Nevelske has been under ukrainian control. Deepstate even had the outskirts in the gray zone since forever ago, they didn't even confirm a solid russian foothold in the village lol.

Good question ... I would like a deeper explanation of from where these yellow strokes on the map originate.
@GeneralGrievousCIS
4 ай бұрын
Looking at the map on satellite view, some of those yellow fortification lines sit directly on top of obvious fortifications you can see from Google's satellite mapping (most of them are presumably from pre-2022). These ones usually seem to present the biggest problem for the Russians, presumably because they are the strongest/best engineered. Others don't appear on the satellite map, and (I'm guessing) are newer fortifications built very recently by the Ukrainians, and more hastily, after Zaluzhny (in the final days of his command) ordered preparations around more defensible fallback positions.
@privatebandana
4 ай бұрын
They are 99% accurate, some yellow dots in the fields can be old farm related structures. But you have to keep 3 things in mind.. 1. Where the trenches are facing. Take the trench south of Ocheretyne for example where the russians entered the town from, it faced south, which means the russians could storm the eastern part of the trench and push through it, using the trench as cover themselves. 2. If those trenches are even worth defending since the russians in the Ocheretyne area are coming from multiple directions, using the tree lines as cover meaning they're coming in from the sides of the trenches and not straight at them. 3. Trenches are basically holes in the ground, they're not reinforced with concrete or anything, which means the russian FABs are literally deleting some trenches before the russian soldiers even get there.

Another thing people don't seem to talk about is competing agenda's.
