In the late 70's all my surf hero's wore Seiko Divers. That is where is all started for me on the beach in Durban!

Love 'em Beautiful and rugged too. Like the 4.30 date myself, I'm not a fan of that useless complication but it's so much easier to ignore in that position ( just wish they offered date& no date versions, I'm sure they'd sell more). Love my Willard, one of my favourite watches... Good video, thank you Bruce 👍🏻👍🏻

I don't think there are any persistent QC issues other than the expectations that appear to be consistently crushed when it comes to "accuracy". I haven't come across any that are completely out of spec but having them run - 15spd is disappointing. But if you have a time grapher (which is a minor investment compared to your watch collection) you can get your Seiko and miyota movements running cosc levels.

Hi Bruce, thanks for another enjoyable video. I’m looking at the SPB143 as my first Seiko diver. I really like the classic look. My question for you: how is the Seiko movement in that watch compared to Swiss movements like the Powermatic 80 or SW-200? I’ve read some complaints about the mid-tier Seiko automatics not being as accurate or having issues like losing time. What’s been your experience as an owner of several Seiko watches?

Hey William, go for the SPB143, it's amazing watch, good looking robust and will go with anything u wear, that being said accuracy is not consistent, however movement is robust.

Whenever a company has a price increase and the product weather stays the same in quality or goes down. I personally move on. Carhartt clothes is a good semi recent one. At one time all expensive Carhartt was USA product. Then made in Mexico . Prices did NOT GO DOWN. I immediately abandoned the brand never went back. Seiko the same . The fact that the watch buying public knows how cheap sapphire is to put on a watch yet seiko constantly charging huge money for mineral is just a shame. They are a huge company and could buy in such mass that I can not believe they do not up grade with price.

Maybe the mm300 Bruce but it's 2 expensive for a seiko, Never again would I buy a seiko, reviewers need to use a seiko as a real daily, all I hear is all in house made, there was a guy at UG channel praising seikos, I bought a sarb033 on his recommendation,the likes of him know nothing, they think they do, pure shite, 25-30 sec fast, could have got a hammy or tissot for 150 more at the time, but I did a bit after, nite and day difference, anyone looking for a good/decent first watch, honest to God just get a decent Swiss brand €700+, don't waste your money as well as a bad experience on seiko or the like, there is worse I know, and it might well put you off watches.

Sadly I would have to agree. It sucks to say but in my opinion if you’re buying a “higher end” Seiko you’re mostly buying for the look/feel rather than the quality and accuracy. This is coming from someone who owns plenty of seikos and who has loved seiko. However, throughout the years I really do think the quality has gone down for the price. From my experience…I have a Willard and two Alpinists that I regularity take backpacking, hiking, and camping. (I go quite often) I use them normally on my trips. I don’t thrash them or bang then around, but I don’t baby them either. They are all within 6 months to a year old and are now running out of spec. To add to this, my Willard’s bezel is also misaligned. I’m sure other people have had good experiences, but at this point I’m just so frustrated. Sadly, I would now point people to the direction of its Swiss competitors for the price.

Unfortunately, there is no other known brand beating Seiko on divers these days. The swiss keep releasing some of the ugliest, uninspired and unrepairable junk out here, until you reach a few good thousands dollars to get to Tudor and other good stuff, you have microbrands but their offerings are limited, there are good value, bad value, good designs, bad designs, rarely you get one that really covers all, then you don’t find a color you like etc etc. Plus you have to be brand agnostic, which most people are not, brand name matters a lot in the watch world. So, a few quality control issues aside, which I haven’t personally experience, Seiko has by far the best diver offer out here. Thy are so far away there’s not even a competition
@d3xmeister

So if you have the budget for Swiss luxury, there are some great choices, if you’re stuck below that price level, it’s Seiko or microbrands
@ezrayoung5257

I totally agree with you to the point that there are no other brands beating Seiko around the 500-800 dollar range. However if you’re looking at the under 2000 range (like the Willard and SPB143) I just think there are more reliable watches out there from the likes of Longines, Yema, Marathon, etc… Anyways, just my opinion from my experiences. Maybe I’m expecting too much. I still wear all my seikos often, I just won’t be wearing them while doing anything that requires reliability such as backpacking, mountaineering, etc…

Never understood the appeal of Seiko tbh? They are shockingly inaccurate. Poorly built. Plus there are so many zillions of similar looking watches all in the same price band they must confuse even the Uber enthusiast surely - I like Omega, but tbf their catalogue is similarly very "cluttered" I guess? I like Grand Seiko to a degree. Whilst their quality is undoubted. Even there, some designs come across as a little "sterile". But it's all personal taste. But the bog standard Seiko watches, to me anyhow, always make me think that a company with that longevity should be able to do far better in their movements and quality control.

@@Talon173 good luck to you Adam. You got lucky, but that's far from the majority.
