What’s unnecessary about it? There is no such thing in ham radio. One of the core tenants of ham radio is experimentation. That’s how the art and science of ham radio continues. If it’s not already being done - figure out a way to do it! Cross-mode between DMR and DSTAR was something people said couldn’t be done easily due to a variety of underlying technical limitations. Now we are seeing a new product about to hit the market that does it! And cross-mode between DMR and DSTAR offers an opportunity to give DSTAR users exposure to DMR and vice versa. Feel free to let the technology pass you buy. There’s plenty of us out there that embrace it! Nobody said you need to buy it.

Software Dev here, the interface looks really nice! Dark/light mode on their local web app is a cool feature, I think a lot of people might not want to be limited to WiFi. I’m sure adding an Ethernet won’t drive up the price that much more, which is already a bit much for something that would be used alongside a handheld device.

Pulled it out to 35ft Horizontally and it was barely bending, amazing. Not heavy either. Had bigtime Back surgery 4 days ago. SO cant tell ya how antenna installed on it. Eric, another great vid. Yeah, I'm DEFINITELY getting one, maybe two of these. I just love my openspot2 and for all the reasons I love it, I'm gonna love this even more. That whole cross-mode functionality is the answer. No more having 6 different HTs. Heck, a cheap little FT-70D will do. I can't wait to get one of these. And, for all the "it ain't ham radio" naysayers, well, pardon me, but if it requires a license, it is ipso facto ham radio. Period. Curt - KJ7CSM

I don't care about going through the internet - when someone makes a unit that I can access the various modes by using my analog radio to talk to the various modes/repeaters, maybe connecting to the TNC port for digital coversion, then I will look at it. Think about in an emergency situation when there is NO internet - Dstar to Dstar radios work, fusion to fusion, etc. just like analogue does, but the ability to send data, fotos, etc is a great help in EmCom work. So if I can connect to any of those with one rig, what a boon to the world that would be.

So let me ask you, I live in Rural NW Iowa about 50 miles from the Nebraska border. Because we live in a condo, no HF allowed. There is 1 I said 1 analog Repeater 35 miles away in very hilly and rolling land. If I go out of town to them near by State Park and sit on a hill I can hit it. Only one problem it's dead, no one uses it. I have my dual band in my wife's car and always on Simplex and once in a while I get someone. I don't have room in my 2014 Expedition King Ranch for HF and to be honest, my wife doesn't want me drilling holes in our 80,000.00 towing vehicle. Suggestions??? I use Brandmeister everyday, I don't cross band just DMR right now. I we move I'll be back on HF until then, this is my radio life. I have a ZumSpot 2 and a OpenSpot 2 I use a AnyTone UV868D & 878D. They work wonderful and be back t HT's I've ever purchased. Bridge com offers better support for what they sell than Kenwood and they know the product very well. I don't know how much more you can ask. When I can walk again, broken m.h ankle I'll get a 500 series mobile that does Digital for the X.

@@droningharry Your situation perfectly matches one of the very reasons hotspots exist today. Many hams do not stop to consider that many other hams do not have the same "perfect" circumstances they enjoy. I am like you: I have zero repeaters in my area, analog or digital, so for a while I relied on a hotspot. However, I was fortunate enough to have recently acquired an HF rig and antenna and live in an area that is HF friendly. I hope you are able to improve your situation in the very near future.

Trent Wilbanks Sorry for that messed up reply but it’s the same old type of argument “a nocode ham isn’t a real ham” I could never understand why old timers whined. 30$ Baofeng. I am lucky enough to own some expensive radios including the new icom-705 , yet suprisingly i've had some of the best quality reports from a Baofeng handheld. I have the GT-3PTP and the thing is built like a tank, guality is supreem, equal to any yeasu. Sound quality, ditto. I cant fault them. They have their place and I always have one handy and wouldn't hesitate to recommend one for anyone as a hotspot radio or backup . Lets stop this radio snobbery, its not what youve got its how you use it. Not everyine can buy top end, but I personally wouldn't place any chinese radio "bottom end" they are in the majority perfectly useable and functional, after all they all come from the same place.

Interesting device HamRadioConcepts. I am still playing around with and building allstar nodes so I haven't exhausted that avenue yet...Places like the Winsystem don't have a digital gateway as of yet. I do like the idea that one can purchase a single radio of choice and use a single hotspot to access folks everywhere on the various modes. It's cute, that is for certain, but I think Mark over at Micro-Node International has had such a unit for some time now...although not with a built in battery of course. Replacing the battery may be an issue in the future, otherwise, once the battery refuses to take a charge it will have to be tethered to a power source. Small issue, but important, especially if the selling point is being battery operated. I have held off on the digital revolution for now, and probably will for another year or two, but that is the beauty of amateur radio, there is so many different facets that one can spend years exploring a single avenue until moving onto something else. I see this as a way for hams that have less than desireable radio locations a way to communicate. Of course allstar and other analog modes do the same thing. Which is better? Unfair question. The answer is, what works for you, the user?

Absurdly expensive! ~$317.00 USD with shipping based on the current value of the Euro. The WiFi in the OS2, whether the manufacturer admits to it or not, was fundamentally flawed. When I asked what they’re using in the OS3, the response I got is they’re using the same WiFi chipset but a different antenna. Is a different antenna going to make that much of a difference in a device that size? I’m not buying it. My advice - don’t be a guinea pig. Let others buy it first and be the ones to work the kinks out of it. I was one of the first to receive the OS2 and the first 3 months were PAINFUL!!! It’s impossible for SharkRF to test every combination of equipment that hams will use with their hotspots. Don’t be a beta tester. Wait until the code is production quality.

I never had a single problem with the OS2 with the WiFi, in fact it was the only hotspot I have owned that automatically reconnected to the wifi from my iphone, and also, for some reason, the dashboard always came up on the iphone (openspot2.local) whereas Pi-Star would require me to reset the hotspot, reset the iphone, and sync them at the same moment, but then wouldnt connect ot the dashboard on certain browsers. When I walk away from truck, the OS2 and OS3 jump right back on, and with Iphone, but the pi-star units wouldnt... then again, I heard the exact opposite from Android users who said their iphone would never work.

HamRadioConcepts yes there are a lot of people that have no trouble with the WiFi in the OS2 but go check out the SharkRF forums and see how many actually are - even after the product has been out for a year. I just helped someone move over to a Pi-Star based hotspot because he was having nothing but issues with the WiFi connection dropping in his OS2 even with the most recent firmware. I still think it’s better to be more conservative than hop on a new product on day 0. It’s impossible for companies to test every combination/permutation of how customers use products. It’s not until they’re out in the wild before the manufacturers are able to determine what needs to be fixed. If there’s one thing I’ll say about SharkRF that’s pretty amazing - they were rolling out new firmware releases almost daily during the first couple of months of the release of the OS2. That’s pretty amazing! I’d have to think the developers didn’t get much sleep during that time.

Personally don't care about the battery but I'm sure some would like it. Wouldn't mind a ethernet port for home use but this does look interesting. Probably better than PiStar as far as setup and mobile use So if I have a Yaesu radio and wanted to talk to a Brandmeister TG I could use my phone to switch the TG's on the OpenSpot? Is that how it works? Seems like no one wants to make a good looking UI mobile DMR with a remote mount face...I know about connect system radio but don't like the screen. AnyTone would be nice if the face was remote mount. Maybe Kenwood will release a mobile version of D74 in 2020 with a remote mount face... What's the cost of the OS3?

So if I understand correctly, I need to carry my phone or tablet or be near some device that can access wifi to control what the radio will be connected to? I already see a market for an intuitive interface built in to a VHF-UHF radio that provides in one radio box the DMR, DStar, YSF, P25, etc. capability without the need for a go--between like the OpenSpot 3. So I say... ICOM, Yaesu, Kenwood, et al.. .listen up !! Here is what you can make some money on in 2020... a handheld rig that is analog, DMR, DStar, YSF, P25 et al with 5 watts on each band and WiFi connectivity for where you're not near a repeater... hmmm.. just use the hotspot connection on my phone.. now that would be easy peasy squeezie! I think I'll hang on to my DV4Mini, my OpenSpot 1 and my MMDVM hotspots until I can buy one HT with it all. I would wager that Icom does it first.

I don't think you understand, Icom wants NOTHING to do with YSF in their products, Yaesu wants NOTHING to do with DSTAR in their products. DMR and P25 can be developed by anyone. Kenwood decided to build on Dstar with their own unit, but they will NEVER have YSF in their product line. The only one who can do it is a company who is their own, like SharkRF. In the meantime, SharkRF is bridging the gap because noone else can.,

OpenSpot3 - The most overpriced, superfluous and technically obsolete toy since the introduction of fully duplex-capable repeaters with pi-Star for your pocket. And that for a fraction of the price of an OpenSpot3.

Thank you I concur way OVER PRICED.

I have pi-star units and an openSpot2 which I purchased last. I'll buy the openSpot3 for $300 before I'll buy another pi-star for even $100. The quality, features and ease of use are unmatched in the openSpot.

Again I buy a PI STAR before I pay $300 for this overpriced toy. I buy a Chevrolet that can get me from point A to point B just like and over priced Mercedes.

@@kg5pte nothing wrong with preferring savings over quality. You prefer to pay less and do more; I prefer to pay more and do less. Hence the spirit of Amateur Radio. 😜
