more and more of my friends in the concrete industry have bought such attachments the past few years. Honestly, the time saved in removing larger chunks especially when it comes to driveways, sidewalks, etc is huge. Slabs like that may tend to slide around more in the back of the truck than lumps. A strop or two may be a good idea. Your tail gate opens to the sides rather than hinges to the top. Tail gates that hinge upwards risk being ripped off when tipping slabs as they hit it rather than flowing under it. Something to be aware of if you use a different truck. Great bit of kit.

When you scoop up concrete chunks with a bucket near a wall, there is always the risk that some chunk or the bucket hits the wall and damages it. The beak is the bomb. I thought I'd mentioned it to you before. It's really fast and less intrusive than breaking it and then scooping the concrete up with a bucket. You do lose a little bit (space-hauling weight might not be maximized) during hauling because of the air gaps in spanning around bigger pieces. I'm not sure if one is available for your stand-up machine? 🤷🏻♂️ That would be really advantageous. Great video Shawn
@GCFD
2 жыл бұрын
Hey Ed you mentioned it to me before and I had seen it working, so I knew I wanted to get one. My mini skid attaches to full size attachments so the beak fits it. I am waiting for some small slab stuff (like around a pool deck) to try the beak on the mini. I am torn with the space-hauling thing because I don't know if lots of small spaces or a few larger spaces are more efficient. I know when I've hauled large chunks of slab on my small trucks the weight adds up very quickly. Either way I think the beak is an outstanding tool for removing concrete.
@edpoints1127
2 жыл бұрын
@@GCFD definitely! With the price of fuel, and depending on your labor cost chasing around small chunks of concrete... I guess it boils down to how much the weight difference is and what is the travel time/mileage to the dump site. Kind of a per job call., 🤔

@@GCFD they already have on site grinders to recycle/reuse the concrete as gravel. Some even operate on a skid steer. I've only seen them... No personal experience. There are a boatload of different variables with that route. Quality of machine, cost to replace "blades", transportability, etc... A QUALITY machine probably isn't cheap, to justify the expense would require using it fairly often. Renting it would be great if responsible people only rented it. 😅 IDK if they are available in your area, but certain places allow us to dump for free or minimal cost since they have a giant grinding plant that sells the regrind as road base.

Great work seen dirt monkey get into this style attachment. Like the attachment videos for sure. Im surprised for how affordable they are that you dont own a post hole digger i use mine for all kids of projects.

I have thought about a post hole digger but haven't found one yet. What do you use yours for mostly?

Love this thing. How would it go on concrete reinforced by rebar I wonder?

I would be interested to see how this does with reinforced slabs that have rebar or wire mesh in them. I know when our street was replaced they used a similar method but it was a large excavator doing the work and it struggled with the rebar holding large chunks together. I am curious if with mesh or rebar the beak would cause a break but then you would have to fold the slab over in an attempt to break the mesh or rebar. Possibly even having to pause and cut the exposed rebar or mesh before loading. I know this is not a large issue in your area as you have explained many times how it is not used in many scenarios in your location. But I still think it would be good knowledge to have for those who may be considering the beak and may have to face those issues in their area.

Great point Ken. I'm not sure how it would work with rebar. On their website, they show slabs being cut with a concrete saw and then removed by the beak, so that would be one way to deal with rebar.

Andrew Camarata has that same attachment and tested it in at least a couple of videos.

When I've seen your friends lay concrete or you remove it, it never seems to have reinforcements in it. I thought adding rebar was normative. Does it depend on the application?
@GCFD

It depends on the location more. Here, we have no frost line, no subsurface water (clay subsoils) and no bentonite. Rebar is not used here for driveways and sidewalks and other non structural concrete.
