Song was based on a horror movie of the same name from 2008. The serial killer films his victim's deaths in 8mm to be examined later for signs of the endless cycle of death and rebirth. The movie is sick. The new album covers a very wide range of styles.

Ok dude, here it goes! First and foremost I appreciate your input and you preference in music! Band-Maid is that type of group that generates all genres of rock into their music, which includes that so called poppy chorus! Regardless of opinion just know that it fits in perfectly, as well as their progressive changes, with their songs and that’s what makes them special! I will bet you that once you see them live and up close, you’ll learn to appreciate the so called pop in their chorus! Take it from a guy who loves rock music since 1977
@VladimirChupin

It's not pop, to be honest. It's the sing-along parts, which they add to the songs specifically to engage the audience. For example, nobody would honestly say that MORATORIUM is a pop song, but it has a very nice woah-woah-woah part, which leaves an indelible impression when you sing it in front of them at a live show. Like here, for example: kzitem.info/news/bejne/s66juJ2NgYxkh34 If you listen to the end, you'll hear it, and probably will understand what I mean. It was actually not that easy to sing our part. But we managed, and Saiki approved ✨😍

BAND-MAID wants to be together with their fans, they want any show to be a joint venture. Which is quite unusual, and requires a very special type of talent. I'm afraid that there's no chance that all of the rest of the album will sound like this! While everything they do can reasonably be described as hard rock they've already pulled in at various times pop-rock, punk, funk, metal and jazz as influences, and we know that the new album adds anthemic rock and blues-rock (at a minimum) to those. In short, rather than narrowing their focus they seem committed to broadening it. Personally I find their eclecticism invigorating for the most part.

Personally I don't mind the 'poppy' parts at all, it gives variety to a song. I can only listen to so much of one style before a song to me gets really boring ... that's not to say that a traditional metal/heavy rock (or any genre really) song can't be good on the first listen or two, but after a while, once you hear it a couple of times you can get to a point where there is nothing new to discover about the song ... most metal and pop is like that ... they lay down the beat that doesn't change other than maybe between verse and chorus, the chords and hooks are basically repeated throughout the whole song, so it quickly gets a bit boring. Band-Maid songs are case studies in how to keep a song interesting for many many more listens. The have the regular verse/chorus/bridge(break-down) parts, as do most other bands (although it seems that a lot of bands these days don't even do that much to make the song interesting, they just play a 'groove' around 1 or 2 chords and call it 'a day') but Band-Maid (Kanami, the lead guitarist does most of the music writing and arranging, she's a genius IMO) does something a bit different (other bands do this at time as well, but Band-Maid is very consistent.) Bamd-Maid seems to break their songs in 16 bar section, where in each of these 16 bar section they change up the song ... they do 16 bars where the drums/bass/guitar will do one pattern, usually a relatively 'calm' pattern, then the next 16 bars they change the pattern usually building it up to a more complicated or interesting pattern, then the next 16 bars they change the pattern again, another 16 bars and another pattern change until they reach the chorus or break-down (and they usually do a similar thing with every chorus, changing patters every 16 bars also building up to a climax.) I recognize this kind of style from my days playing Irish/Scottich/CapeBreton fiddle tunes ( a fiddler would play through the tune straight the first time or two then start doing variations the next few run run-throughs to keep the tune from getting monotonous ... I assume Band-Maid - Kaname in particular - has either studied fiddle tunes, or similar types of music styles (many European forms of traditional music have similar styles to this as well, I'm just more familiar with Irish/Scottish) or more likely the Japanese have a similar form of traditional music that employees this style ... either way, it is in my opinion the way to write the best music, at least for genres like Rock. You can listen to a Band-Maid song and tell yourself, ok, let me listen to that again because the guitar was amazing, so I'm going to pay close attention to the guitar this time through ...but part way in you notice the bass doing some crazy so you lose your attention to the guitar and start paying attention to the bass only to get distracted by the drums ... so every time you re-listen you end up just noticing more and more things that unexpectedly catches your attention, Not shitting on your preference for the style you prefer, to each their own ... just putting in my own $0.02 on the subject ... either way, great reaction, that's why I've subscribed.

@@outwest1014 Well, it's a well-known controversy, of course 😁 I personally would not listen to Babymetal for entertainment purposes, but of course, that's just me and something in my personal taste. I can see that Babymetal does appeal to many a man. But for me, it's too much of a "gap." I see that for the Japanese people, including Miku Kobato, this "gap" is important, and many Japanese people adore it, but in my case, I had to overcome somehow the fact that BAND-MAID are dressed the way they are 😁 It helped a lot when I listened to their CDs, without watching their MVs, because their visual looks distracted me from the music *a lot*. Of course, after like a couple of months, I did not care at all how they look, it became irrelevant for me, but initially, yes, it was a problem. Just tell me, as a Babymetal fan, do people listen to Babymetal CDs? I know Babymetal has published three so far, right? I sincerely can't imagine how can anyone listen to Babymetal with sound-only. If you confirm that the people actually do it, well, then I will simply relocate Babymetal in my head from the shelf with a tag "dance group, not for headphones-only listening," to the shelf of "the music I don't understand, but probably great in its own right." 😂 There is a special shelf in my head for such bands. One of the items there is Nightwish, actually. I listened to them somewhere back in 2012, digested all their albums gradually, listening to them on my way to/from work, but then I felt that they bore me to death. Recently there was a resurge of interest to them, I tried to listen again, but this time it was even worse. So, Nightwish is now on that shelf, in a tightly sealed container with a big red warning sign, "Do Not Open!" 😂 It's interesting that Babymetal does not have this red warning sign in my head, some of their songs are OK for me, but I will probably never listen to them on my own initiative.

I keep hearing that people call The Dragon Cries a "bluesy" and "slower" song. Which leaves me stunned with awe. OK, Ozzy Osbourne also said for the record back in 1969, that he sincerely can't understand why all those cries and wailing in the press, about "Black Sabbath spreads its Satanic wings over Britain." "We play calm blues," he said. Well... If Black Sabbath is a calm blues, then OK, The Dragon Cries is in this category too. My perception is that Rinne is BAND-MAID metal song #1, and The Dragon Cries is on the solid second place in terms of heaviness. It's different from Rinne in the mood, but still in that desperation/depression/black metal segment, which is the domain of metal music. My perception, of course. When I heard a reactor saying that DICE is one of the "more poppy songs" in BAND-MAID catalogue... That sealed for me the fact that "one man's meat is another man's poison"... There can be no accounting for tastes.

@@VladimirChupin that is what and who l based my assessment on. Became a big fan of Ozzy when he hooked up with Randy. Everyone wants to put everything and everybody into a pigeon hole, pun intended. Paul McCartney wrote what many consider the very first metal song with Helter-Skelter. That hardly made the Beatles a metal band. For me there are only two types of music or even sound for that matter. Wind chimes or fingernails scratching on the blackboard. Best regards. I wanted to add that l suggested the song was "blues oriented". This is also my opinion based on chord progression.

@@sacluvsBM Well, I remember how my friends, the professional musicians, explained to me back in the early 90s, what's the difference between hard rock and metal. One of the ideas was that hard rock has its roots in blues, while heavy metal is growing more from symphonic and classical music. I remember that I was really keen on tracing those influences after I heard them say that, and for many years after I kept this juxtaposition in my mind, comparing Metallica to Black Sabbath, etc. Of course, with the advent of the 21st century, many things changed. I see, for example, that many Japanese metal bands are under the strong influence of King Crimson, while in the West this style and sound has largely passed unnoticed. I believe the Japanese culture in general gravitates towards prog-rock sound, of which King Crimson is the brightest exemplar. In Japan, everything is refined and complicated, and they take those ideas of "discipline," as propounded by Robert Fripp, very close to their heart. That's why Tony Visconti called BAND-MAID's style of music the "J-prog," I believe.

@@VladimirChupin There is much you related that is certainly true enough. When l bought my first transistor radio which was a big deal because now you could take music with you in your pocket times were obviously much simpler. We had rock n roll which soon would become known simply as rock. We had country and western. We had adult contemporary, Jazz and classical. What really happened in those days of my childhood was any music outside the narrow limits described above was almost automatically labeled rock music as a way of keeping it apart from "decent" music and by extension "decent" people. The labeling had very little to do with a musical classification and more to do with labeling the delinquents and bohemians who had a natural affinity for this new savage and barbaric art form at the time. And trying to classify and micro analyze is almost a waste of time simply due to the subjectivity involved because beyond the most general classification there is little to separate one from the other. John Lennon on stage in Germany in 1965: Thank you very much. We'd like to carry on now with a song from our newest LP or electronic noise depending upon whose side you are on. No matter what style of music it might happen to be or wherever its inspiration originated all true "rock" music continues to be gauged by me solely on that one criteria. And if l happen to love and enjoy a few of those tunes along the way that is just a bonus.

Band Maid is awesome, this song is so good. These ladies are amazingly talented, world domination! I’m all in. Also, great reaction again, keep it up. Hey checkout the band, BRIDEAR, song, Light in the Dark. Another really cool band from Japan.

Wait until you hear the next song THE DRAGON CRIES its produced by Tony Visconti and sounds like it came out in 1970. A little bit controversial (apparently) but they are showing that the want to be compared to the greats of old. And by the way this song is called Rinne.

@@TheGrumpyNerd I'm not sure I wasn't part of the debate. A few days earlier a k pop star that I was particularly fond of called Hara killed herself on Sunday she was very beautiful and quite frankly I was dealing with that I didn't even hear about the dragon cries, which as far as I know you can only hear on Spotify. It sounds a bit like Jimmy Hendricks, Black Sabbath and maybe deep purple its a much more classic sound that some people are a little shocked by. I look at the difference between Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and Volume 4 and sad wings of Destiny from Judas Priest and it was very common for established bands to produce albums that have nothing like their previous sound and I think Band Maid want to be compared to the greats. For a long time they have been compared to the Beatles (and I don't have a problem with that I just can't believe that so many people still know the Beatles) Anyway it's just one song the rest of the album is bound to be more conventional. RIP HARA.

@@TheGrumpyNerd It has a strong blues feel, which is breaking new ground for them (although lead guitarist Kanami is an avowed fan of Carlos Santana - who certainly has his bluesy moments - and has been showing a marked Hendrix influence from time to time in live shows) so I've got to put it down to the shock of the new. The vocals are as close to soul as you're ever likely to get from a Japanese band and that may not be to everybody's taste either. Personally I think it's a great track and I'd definitely be down for a 'Saiki Sings The Blues' solo album any time they cared to make one.

@@MoonmanRedux its almost as iff Saiki took the band over for one song she sounds so different but so good. I look at the interviews with all the tv and radio stations and Saiki is never participating or even looking in the right direction and you wonder iff this is the sort of thing she prefers. I mean this sound didn't come from nowhere so its either her or Tony Visconti. How could Tony know that sound was there unless Saiki showed it to him

Band maid is not a metal band, you will find most of their songs not heavy or fast enough for your taste. This one is the "heaviest" song BM has made so far. maybe You can try other japanese female bands like lovebites, old Bridear's songs, mary's blood instead.

This Band tends to do a variety of genres, Real Existence, Blooming and Different are more speed. They do Pop, Funk, Traditional Japanese, Ballads, Hard Rock and sometimes mixing them all in the same song. I believe you will apreciate several of ther songs but not all. Their strenght is on the songwriting and live performances. But songs like Rinne or Real Existence you will apreciante MV or Live.

They kicked everything up a notch with this one :) Try Bridear -Scream (live 2018) kzitem.info/news/bejne/rq2mnoaBhWuDrI4 Impressed, but big lineup changes since...not yet sure if I like the result of the new lineup or not lol

I second Bridear-Scream live. Hea-vyyyyy tho touch more influence from 90s than 80s, still goes slow, fast, deep, wailing, haunting, shredding. Japan’s women are on fire this decade! Btw, Scream (like All of Lovebites) is in English, even if it’s a lil hard to hear, and was fun to look up lyrics first. Then try their new song Ghoul

OK...Cool reaction, but you have to know this....... This is their heaviest song to date .They do have other metal type songs like Domination kzitem.info/news/bejne/2aOuq6mHkYZ5iIo , but for the most part they are Hard Rock with metal/punk/funk/pop elements. That said, they are my favorite right now. They actually also have 3 mini albums (consisting of 8-9 songs) along with 2 full length albums, and a new one to be released in a few weeks time.

The "pop" choruses isn't so much Bandmaid's thing as it is just a mechanism to keep non-Japanese fans somewhat engaged with the lyrics of the song. As much as you wanna say you hate it, you likely would find it harder to maintain interest in the song without it. I've been listening to this band long enough to know that absolutely nothing they do is by accident and it's all part of the master formula on building a fan base that does not understand Japanese.

Poppy chorus line over hard rock instrumental is what makes band-maid special though. While l like this song, it's not my favourite BM song. This song is for metalheads. I don't think you are ever going to fully appreciate this band. Because this new album has some 'soft', 'poppy' stuff, too. You've got to have more eclectic music taste to really get it.

For a Japanese band that is consistently hard, try Ningen Isu. For all female bands check out Lovebites although they span a range from powerer metal to thrash depending in the song. Mary's Blood is also a good choice. Other more obscure bands to check out would be exist†trace and older Bridear.
