What's in a Name, Fruition Friends?
Every heirloom variety began as a brand new, never before savored seed that became a 'velveteen' heirloom with time and care, shared across generations.
We're honored to create and share new varieties with us all, becoming beloved heirlooms for generations to come...
...and friends, we'd love your help!
Each year we share new varieties for us all, so we'd love us all to participate in naming them, too!
What's in a Name?
Indigenous mother, writer & botanist Robin Wall Kimmerer reminds us that with gifts come great responsibility. How does this engage the beautiful and also fraught opportunity to 'name' new vegetables?
Speaking of 'new' mosses she was asked to name as a botanist, Robin shares, 'I had no will at all to name the mosses in this place, to assign their Linnean epithets. Mosses remind me to remember that there are mysteries for which a measuring tape has no meaning, so many questions and answers beyond knowing.'
Simultaneously, Robin reminds us that 'having words also creates an intimacy with the plant that speaks of careful observation.'
She also encourages us that "it is a sign of respect to call a being by its name, and a sign of disrespect to ignore it. Words and names are the ways we humans build relationships, not only with each other, but also with plants.
What have you 'named' and what joy, meaning and potential complexity has that brought to your life?
