Nice video mate. Great job by the Sram rep of explaining this incredible technology. Anything that encourages people to pedal is very important...no e bikes for me anymore because it made me kinda lazy. I noticed that the MORE GEARS I have the better. I have an 8 speed...3 rings on the front and 8 on the cassette. I can pedal anywhere in NYC with great ease, so I can imagine a 12 speed can get me up the steepest hills in NYC and almost anywhere in the world. I would encourage people to keep pedaling because it's good for your health. Thank you and the Sram guy for this important video.

Great info vid Cam. Looking forward to your riding review of the 2 systems. I'm looking to the 1x setup if I ever upgrade. I've priced both setups with light weight frames and wheels and realise a tattslotto win is required! The guys at Giant advised to wait a couple of months to see the new models which will be cheaper. BTW. I was in Trilogy yesterday buying a new helmet and sussed out a nice Chapter 2 with SRAM 1x and aero wheels and bars and nearly snuck out the shop with it!!!!! ......right up until Keith telling me it belonged to....YOU!!!! Not greatly impressed by the arguments from the SRAM rep: "when we first invented eTap, we knew we could do better .... so we end of lifed it after a few years and invented something new and incompatible". "keep it SRAM" - easy for him to say. This is a difficult decision when a chain at my local bike shop costs $80, a new cassette $400 and a new rear mech $1000 (and that's just Force - Red is no doubt more). Plus they won't allow me to mail-order from an overseas retailer, so there's basically no price competition. Also a strange attitude that by introducing yet another bottom bracket standard, somehow this will solve the problem of too many bottom bracket standards ... I have SRAM Force (came OEM on my Giant TCR) ... but I'm not entirely convinced it is a better option than Shimano Di2.

"If it's Sram, keep it Sram". I'll translate that for daft folksy folks, who tend to think that is a good thing: "It is proprietary, and we'll keep it proprietary, regardless of the customer feedback". These manufacturers steer clear of universal standards all they can. They hope to benefit from that. Let's wait and see how it plays out for these greedy bastards.

I was surprised he said they haven’t had any issues when we just saw Richie Porte with a mechanical that had a big impact on him in the Tour of CA, which this guy just came back from. Maybe Cam should be asking some tougher questions around that? Was it the same group set? I have been planning on upgrading after some dropped chain issues myself on an older Force group set, but seeing the pro’s with the same issues on the best equipment does not inspire confidence without any explanation from SRAM.

Good one Cam, been waiting to hear some details. As a serious 1X fan, I can see the new AXS and the flat-top-chain is going to fail my needs. Unless they do the same SRAM Flat top chain in GOLD. I like the bling Factor!! According to SRAM, non-SRAM 11 Speed chains will not work well with the cassette's. ( bugger). No mention what so ever of the front derailleur which as I'm beginning to think might be the weak spot in my axs Force drive train. Just took delivery on a new Canyon and shifting to the large chain ring was only successful about 9 out of 10 times during the first ride. The set up shown at 11:09 doesn't even show the front derailleur installed unless that was meant to be a 1 x (which doesn't seem to be, judging from the size of the chainring). I'm hoping I can get it to behave better than what I've seen so far otherwise I'll seriously have to reconsider my options

Great video - 2 questions. Why haven't SRAM, Shimano & Campag gone to an oversized pulley wheel system on the rear derailleur with their new groupsets? Is it that they think Ceramic Speed oversized pulley wheel system doesn't provide more Watts or is it a cost issue? Secondly recently on some cycling vlogs/podcasts/websites there has been articles/talk in regard to cross chaining using 2 x front chain rings (ie: front 53/39 with a 11 - 30 tooth rear) for roadbike setup. Saying you shouldn't use the 53 ring on front and be in the 24/27/30 tooth rear sprocket & same for 39 ring and last 3 lower sprockets on rear cassette. My question is how does a one-by system get around cross chaining on a 11/12 speed rear cassette? Hope this makes sense, Cheers

One thing that's helpful with 1x is that since the chainring is centered on the chainset as opposed to being offset to the right/left as on a double, the angle is actually smaller in most cases. For example, being all the way to one end of the cassette in 1x is a smaller angle than being in the same cog but the opposite chainring in 2x (big-big or small-small). If you are riding something steady like a TT/tri, you can stay in the center of the cassette and keep the chain much straighter than if you used a traditional chainset and ran the big ring with the middle or lower part of the cassette. In other words, the maximum chain angle is considerable lower with 1x thanks to the centered chainrings, but it can still be slightly offset most of the time if you get your gearing wrong.

Hey Skip, from SRAM: Potential benefits of CerSpd biggies are vanishingly small and come with comparatively huge compromises. Most of the perceived benefits are the results of minimal sealing and lightweight lubrication. (One can have virtually all of the CerSpd ‘benefits’ with no investment: remove the seals from stock bearings, clean out the grease, and apply a light oil. Just be sure to clean and lube every ride.) Big pulleys rob shift precision because pulleys require a small bit of play in order to run efficiently. That play is amplified by the growth in pulley size. A large, efficient pulley is not precise. A RD that’s designed to accommodate huge pulleys is HUGE. Such a RD would sacrifice weight and aerodynamics due to its size. (Installing huge pulleys on RDs that are not designed for them comprises chain gap management [shift accuracy] on many of the cassettes that the original RD is designed to accommodate and compromises chain wrap [which affects wear and safety] in all cases.) SRAM, Campy, and Shimano intend to provide outstanding ride experiences using parts that are designed to accommodate many sizes of chainrings and cassettes. If you focus on pulley efficiency, you might find some infinitesimal gains by compromising other aspects of the ride experience.

And again from SRM Q2: The effects of cross-chaining on drivetrain efficiency are far too small to concern anyone but a track racer (who has only one gear to worry about). Those who claim otherwise do not interpret the data correctly. Please crosschain in the big-big direction all you like! (Small-small has different efficiency issues related to bend radii, and low chain tension risks chain drops.) Not only are the potential efficiency losses inconsequential, the efficiency gained by executing fewer front shifts (which crosschaining allows) is much bigger. SRAM 1x cranks position the ring between big and small rings. So the chainline is never as dramatic as big-big or even big-next-to-big. Zero front shifts also enhances efficiency.
@ca5ualm3dia

ok great BUT, how do you get the maximum efficacy in a 10 tooth cog , how to get maximum efficiency in a 38 tooth cog , the most gears the more you have to cross chain , and in the end loose out , this is more a problem to a solution , 2x10 is just fine for the every day , to the pro , why switch to 1x12 when i can recon a ride , or race course and just adjust my gears to match giving me the exact thing i need when i need for half the price ???

Very informative. I don't think he's correct that the mountain bike chain "wont work" since SRAM shows a build with a Eagle cassette, derailleur and chain with a Force 1X crank. kzitem.info/news/bejne/1q6w2nuHoV-koGU BTW, I have first gen eTap on one bike and Force axs (2X) on my gravel bike and both are brilliant. I don't use the axs app much at all. So far I've only used it to upgrade software. I didn't notice any difference in performance after the upgrade. Battery life is superb and shifting is flawless. @@CamNicholls I bought one weeks after watching the video first time. The front derailleur is junk. Everything else is fine, but a rubbish front derailleur ruins it all. It keeps dropping the chain. Or doesn't push sufficiently far against it to drop it onto the big chainring. Have also had two chain drops (one on a downshift, one random) onto the carbon bottom bracket shell. The chain got lodged in there every time, and took considerable effort to dislodge from. The communication protocol is not the problem. To the contrary, it's good, it's really, really good. The real issue is the physical design of the Sram [Force] eTap AXS front derailleur: it's rubbish. It will keep behaving in one of the two ways: - It will fail to push the chain sufficiently far from the small to the big chainring (and will keep grinding against the chain ad infinitum upon an upshift) - It will push the chain over the big chainring. In other words, it will facilitate chain drops on ca. 50% of upshifts These are issues no amount of finetuning alignments, inner and outer limit adjustments will resolve. The eTap AXS front derailleur is a thoroughly flawed design. For that reason, to anyone who wants to buy an eTap AXS groupset, My recommendation would be: - Buy a 1x eTap AXS groupset! That means, you'll have to contend with a 33t largest cassette sprocket and a short cage derailleur that won't cope with anything larger (never mind, Sram claims non eTap AXS cassettes are incompatible with eTap AXS rear derailleurs). If you live in The Netherlands or Estonia - and do not plan to ever tour with your road / adventure / gravel bike, it will do for you. Else, deem yourself unfortunate. - Steer clear of the eTap AXS altogether. The 2x eTap AXS will drive you bonkers with its roughly 50% chain drop frequency. - If you're a #cuckold - a rich one at that - buy a 2x eTap AXS groupset; sell the front & rear derailleurs, as well as the chain and the cassette for peanuts (or, alternatively, cuck yourself into going straight for a 1x eTap AXS groupset, and sell the rear derailleur, the cassette and the chain for peanuts) - and buy an expensive Eagle XX1 / XX0 rear derailleur, a compatible chain and a ridiculously overpriced cassette - and use your eTap AXS as you would any 1x system: you'll gain range at the cost of fine gradations between shifts. Without that range you won't be able to do much riding anywhere but in The Netherlands and Estonia, especially if you are heavy or tour loaded. - If you're particularly optimistic and record-level patient, wait for Sram to release a long-cage eTap AXS rear derailleur and a 10-50 (or thereabouts) cassette. If they never do, just wait until you die. If they do, say, in 20-30 years, buy a groupset. - Buy a Shimano groupset, pay a Voodoo master a visit, make sure [s]he can spel your R8020 (or similar) shifters into actuating past the first few tries. If you are lucky - you'll be fine. If not - cuck it in and buy something better than Shimano rubbish.
