Love your new conservatory. Hope it’s warm and dry, and will let you film more videos about renovating those old machines.

Very nice! It's such a quaint space now. It's hard to put a lot of stuff in a small space, I know. Fortunately, our new (to us) house has plenty of room for my growing collection of sewing machines (19 now, mostly vintage). Your boutique had some very cool things 😀.

I love your new conservatory. The way you decorated it and such, it's very similar to how I decorate except I use a ton of live plants. Please keep the sewing machine videos coming. I saw your Singer treadle one just before watching this. I'm hoping I can transfer the info from that video and apply it to helping myself get a White treadle sewing machine set up.

I'd love a ton of live plants but they wouldn't survive the temperature extremes in this room - I have them all over the house though but struggle with enough light and the pesky fungus gnats - sticky traps and mosquito bits don't seem to be making much difference!

I too love your new space! I’m new to your channel & love your candor & content! Looking forward to learning about any Singer 101s, as I bought one during Covid, paid to get it running, and it immediately gummed up again.

This looks FANTASTIC! I think when it comes to sorting through boxes and stuff, it's not so much about the time as it is having the energy. Decision fatigue is a real thing. "Helpful" advice like "just go through a box a day" is definitely NOT helpful. Good for you for creating a BEAUTIFUL studio!

I agree with you about decision fatigue - Sometimes I would walk into a room and not know where to start. I'd just turn around and walk away. And sometimes it's really demoralising to spend an hour sorting thought stuff to not even be able to see any improvement.

I'm glad to know the term for it. I get overwhelmed when I have to sort through my piles. It takes me a while, but once I get there and I have a cleared space to work and live in it's so worth it. The trick is not to let it build up in the first place...but that's so hard as a crafter and EVERYTHING has the potential to be repurposed. The tendency to come across as a hoarder to others is also very real. I just keep repeating the meme that states, "It's not hoarding if your sh** is cool."

@@ejk872 I first learned about decision fatigue from Ryder Carroll, creator of the Bullet Journal. It's the same concept as willpower. It's why you can be motivated to change a habit or build a new one and by the end of the day or week, you default back to the old pattern. You run out of energy to do the new thing. And then we blame ourselves for lacking willpower or we make it a moral failing--or others do it for us! Dana was just talking on a livestream, about not letting clutter build up in the first place. I think she was talking about her bathroom counter, but she said she sees clean/tidy, or a mess. She doesn't see the in-between of those two extremes. I think that's it for a lot of us. I'm looking at my messy desk as I write this. Ha! "How did it get this way?" Doesn't matter. I just need to take stuff to where I would look for it first. (Another Dana principle--not where it SHOULD go, or the logical place for it, but where would I look for it? Because then I'm guaranteed to find it when I need it). As for "hoarding" that's the creative mind that can find a purpose for anything and everything. I'm with you there as are a lot of creatives. Non-creatives just think differently and they can't do what we do. It's easy for them to judge the obvious and then give useless advice that works for them because they're naturally organized. I think that's what I appreciate so much about Dana--she's been there, she created a system for how her brain works and it turns out, that it's how a lot of people's brains work who have struggled with chronic disorganization their whole life. Like me. Still a work in progress--but it's finally progress! So, all this blather to say that you're in good company!

@@LedgerAndLace Thank you for the reassurance that I’m not alone and this kind of behavior is characteristic for creatives. I feel we are far and few. Only because most people I know are not. My grandma, whom I am certain I get my creativity from, was just like me and I remember as a kid how everyone would gossip about how she’s a hoarder, accuse her for having too much stuff, and shame her for it. I feel bad now as an adult that she had to suffer that. It’s especially guilt tripping since we are living in an age where minimalism is a growing fad. Then again I try to repurpose things which in my opinion salvages that article from a land fill. So there you go we are more economically minded.

@@ejk872 I empathize with your grandma. I'm most definitely not a minimalist, and that's one of the things I appreciate about Dana. (I loathed Marie Kondo!) A minimalist would definitely say I have "too much stuff." It's easy to judge. It's also hard for someone to teach a skill that they're naturally good at that comes easy to them. "It's easy," to them and so they make it a moral failing on your part. My mother tried to teach me, but my brain didn't work like hers. My two sisters are just like her and they don't understand my struggle. The worst is having someone naturally organized try to help you. Exhausting. I've gotten more accomplished now than having professional organizers help me, because I'm working WITH my brain and not trying to make myself fit into someone else's system. Also, because I understand about decision fatigue, I'm not blocking out a whole day or weekend to "finally get organized." I work on something until I'm tired and then stop and go do something else. It's much easier that way. 🙂

Love your back drop wall ,,,hmmm looks familiar lol ,,,one thing we dont talk about as collectors is the small spaces we film from and how fast they get filled when you start a youtube channel , i too work in a cramped over filled shop and if you seen it from the outside you wouldnt know i have 2 motorcycles and 26 sewing machines including a couple treadles stuffed in there , always enjoy your videos . Keep up the good work ...

Space - you can never have too much of it! I've lost count of the sewing machines I have - at least over 50 and that's not including over 10 in cabinets. Then there's materials for all my other interests (Including 2 American classic cars).
