Indeed, what is wrong with a stalk? Also, I've only ever driven a Model Y, but where is the drive mode i.e. park, reverse, drive etc. (screen?..) Also how to do you engage autopilot without the drive mode stalk? (screen?...) I think being hell bent on getting rid of something that has been the same on a steering wheel since forever is going in the wrong direction.. With my hand I can flick and press buttons rather quickly instead of fumbling to look for them or think about what button, rotary switch on a rotating steering wheel.. Also what about people who drive multiple vehicles, like a company vehicle? Keeping a few things common with other vehicles is a good thing for familiarity. I just hope they will refresh the MODEL Y to be the OFF-ROAD brother of the Model 3, and justify the higher price by adding active air suspension, integrated sunroof covers, and maybe even an extra paid option for flood/deep water resistance up to the door handles at least, so we can trully have peace of mind in case of emergencies. (Electric vehicles can be the true conquers of hurricanes and flooding since they don't rely on air intake for driving, and they could introduce shutters for the cabin air intake, to protect it against dirty flood water, and recirculate the cabin air trough propper filters to help the air quality while in deep water.)

I do miss the extra information that the screen in front of you gives you in the Model S, so I would probably get an aftermarket screen or heads up if/when I move to the Model 3. The improved refinements of the 'facelift' Model 3 will simply make it an even more compelling buy. I had the chance to drive a Model X Plaid from Gothenburg to Vänersborg (about 1 hours drive) and noticed that having indicators on the steering wheel (or yoke in this case) was only a good thing as long as I was driving on the highway, with the yoke more or less straight all the time. As soon as I got on smaller roads with round-abouts, it became a real pain in the backside, since I often had to click the indicator button while it was out of reach when turning the yoke... I like progess and all, but some things are better as they are... The new Model 3 looks very interesting - I have no doubt I will get to drive one of those too very soon.

I’d reckon that it’s because Tesla is an American car company and there are hardly any roundabouts in America at all. You’d think Tesla could bother to take feedback from their EU customers or, at least, send some engineers to Europe (or in all parts of the world they sell their cars, since other countries might have differences too) to see how well their designs work in those places. It’s not like they can’t build different spec models, they already adopted the EU plug standard while still using their own proprietary standard in the US (which will be part of the new NACS standard starting in ’24/’25).

Thanks for the review Robert. Indicators on buttons the steering wheel - an absolute car crash in my opinion. I have been using the flappy paddle regen controls on our Ioniq 6 recently to switch modes as I slow down to stop and again when I speed up from stationary, for reasons that aren’t important here. My observation from doing this is that unless the steering wheel is pretty close to its normal resting position, it isn’t possible for me to get my head around where the flappy paddles are, because they are bolted to the back of the steering wheel. When I am slowing down or pulling away from stationary, the steering wheel is often not straight, and it is just not possible to find the paddles. Now think indicators, and think how often you turn them on or off when the wheel is not straight. For example, UK road rules for roundabouts require you to change your indicators mid way round, and for many of the smaller ones, the wheel is nowhere near straight for the duration of being on the roundabout. Now think having to find these indicator buttons that are not where they are supposed to be - and you will be able to imagine just how silly they will be to use. Unless, of course, I am the only person in world who would get thrown off by this. I suppose we will find out.

We have a 2019 Model 3 SR+, and a 2021 Model Y LR. They’re fully featured cars, drive like witches, and we’re going to run them till they drop. Seems this new refreshed Model 3, has come of age…it’s what it always wanted to be. Pure class. We’re pushing 70, and we know we’d get used to those ‘stalkless’ steering wheel controls, in the blink of an eye. If our kid’s were young still, I guess they’d appreciate the rear screen and controls. I believe there’s an LED light strip round the interior, which they’d love…and which I would immediately turn off. This is a tour de force. Hopefully, there’ll be a glut of cheap second hand Teslas on the market as a result.

One useful addition (that should be standard on all EVs, actually) would be a charging port on either side of the vehicle. And yes, a Model 2 (small hatchback) and a Model 1 (micro 2-seater? think Smart for2) would be really, really nice.
@subwarpspeed
Жыл бұрын
You mean both sides? With Tesla optimizing for cost I don't see that. For their superchargers they are nearly all built to have it on that spot. For UK I guess it's a downside to have it not on the driver side when you park in your garage. For street charge parking - how is it in UK? closer to the curb but instead a handle sticking out that people in the moment can be enticed to mess with.
@stephanweinberger
Жыл бұрын
@@subwarpspeed in the UK it's probably find, but in countries that drive on the right (i.e. correct :)) side of the street the plug sticks out into the street and becomes a hazard for cyclists. The objectively best place for a charging port would be on the passenger side (as that's where curbside chargers are) somewhere between the A and C pillar (so you need a minimal cable length to reach it, regardless if the charger is in front or behind the car). But since it's just a bunch of cables there should be no problem placing charge ports on both sides. Yes, it's an additional cost, but compared to the price of a car that should be negligible. I'd be happy to pay a little more just for the convenience (and paint protection) of not having to drag a cable under/across the car, in many cases right next to traffic. At the street chargers near to my home I often see Tesla owners park on the left (i.e. against the flow of traffic, which is actually illegal on priority roads here in Austria) just to have the charge port next to the charger.

My kids are good at using their iPhone because they handle it frequently. I’m sure the Tesla is the same - you have to use it a few times before you understand it and you have to be willing to adjust to the new normal. So much better looking than the first version of the Model 3, but how is anyone going to indicate properly on roundabouts in this car? By all means move the gear selector to the screen, even the wipers, but the indicators should have been left in place. Here in Europe, roundabouts are everywhere, and you’re supposed to signal for safety and traffic-flow reasons. All mostly improvements, but I saw this coming, the capacitive buttons - especially the turn signals, I was hoping wouldn't make it over. But at least the horn is still in the only acceptable place, rather than where they put it on the other models. Had they made the horn capacitive, that would have been a deal-breaker for me, because that is just plain not safe at all and makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Gear selector on the main screen is also a masterclass 👌or ergonomic and industrial design. Imagine you are doing a three-point turn in a high traffic boulevard on a Monday morning and your screen is not reactive or is suddenly freezing for a few second. What are you going to do? You pray that the car in front of you going 90km/h will stop soon enough before crashing into you? at this stage i don't know anymore who's more criminal. Other than that, the car is good to drive and incredibly efficient compared to other electric cars i've owned.
