There are houses with more than 6 mppt, like complex roofs and solar pretty much on all sides. We keep the SE inverter and use the PW3 as AC coupled. I wonder how much power it’ll actually be able to provide with three phase installs in Switzerland. We see over 24 kW of instant output and cars and heat pump etc. can result in 20 kW or so… the 44 kW capability is promising. I hope it’ll be possible for the Swiss and our pedantic authorities. Islanding would be nice too so we can actually have power during an outage.

Why cheaper with solar? If it’s VAT, I thought VAT rules had changed and home batteries are zero VAT now, with or without solar, or am I mistaken?
@spiritenergy_uk
3 ай бұрын
The reason that we offer it cheaper with solar is that our installers are already on-site to install the PV system and can help with the Powerwall installation. Therefore the labour can be shared across the whole project and the cost of Powerwall 3 comes down. You also save on the PV solar inverter which brings the overall system cost down by ~£600, depending on the make. It's not technically making the Powerwall 3 cheaper in itself but does contribute to a lower overall price.

I have a 13kw auto changeover gas generator as we have regular power outages during the autumn/winter. Could one of these be installed to do two jobs: 1. Deal with short power interruptions that are too short for the generator to kick in. 2. Keep everything running while the generator comes on line. We have no solar power due to the building's listing status.

@mindracing the use case you’re describing is that of an online UPS which the Tesla Powerwall is not. However, if you had a Powerwall then you’d only need a UPS that has a large enough capacity to deal with an outage of around 5 seconds.

Thanks for the comment, According to Ofgem, the average house uses 2,700 kWh per year. If you get a Powerwall, you would almost certainly go onto an economy 7 style tariff which would bump your usage up to 3,900 kWh, which is an average of ~10-11 kWh per day (disregarding seasonality). Tesla assume that you want to leave 20% capacity in reserve for a power cut, which is one of the reasons why the battery is sized to 13.5 kWh. That configuration would be able to take you off-grid, yes. The Gateway 'islands' the house from the grid. You can go completely off-grid with Powerwall 3, however, it's only 13.5 kWh so realistically you wouldn't be able to power a house for more than a day. One unit wouldn't be enough to take a standard house off-grid all year round, you would probably need 60 kWh of storage with ~ 20 kWp of solar to be able to do that reliably.

Why have they reduced the mppts from six to three for the uk version? I would have thought six would have been an alternative to optimisers?
@spiritenergy_uk

The main reason is to cut costs for the consumer. Most households are fine with just 2x MPPTs. The upgrade to three is welcome, but anymore than that would rarely be used. Systems with panel-level optimisation actually do very little to mitigate shade, and the panels already have bypass diodes in which help a great deal. At the end of the day, the shade is still going to be there.

Problem is ROI for battery and solar seems to be just way too long to make it worthwhile. It needs to be down to 5 years or less.
@spiritenergy_uk
3 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment, at residential scale, some solar-only systems do payback within 5 years with an IRR of over 20%, but that is quite rare, 6-7 years is more common. With battery added on, that payback period does increase to around 8 years. From a purely financial perspective, our clients often make the decision by comparing it to whatever the alternative rate or return is for their money and where they can get the highest NPV. That's discounting any environmental & grid-independency benefits that may come into the decision. A big thing to consider when looking at the payback period for solar and battery is electricity inflation. If electricity inflates at the same rate as it did in 2022 as a result of another Russia-Ukraine type situation, then payback period will suddenly decrease dramatically as each kWh generated by solar is saving much more money. Anyone that installed a system in 2020 will be very glad that they did so. Interestingly, commercial solar has a standard payback period of 3-5 years.

@@spiritenergy_uk yes I’d currently get much more back putting an extra £10k in my pension, tax relief and growth than investing it in solar and a battery. @wakeywarrior
3 ай бұрын
@@mikeforwarduk You are earning what you paid for it in 6 years so ROI yes . But the difference is you can’t get your capital out, and if you ripped it out and sold it, it’s not worth much if anything. Return on investment means point you break even on the sunk capital. Invest money and you keep the capital. Invest say £$15000 over 6 years compound growth at 5% and it’s worth 20,235 with the capital. So your savings in electricity would have to be worth that to be worth a very modest time cost of money. I’ve got money in funds that is making 30% a year. And ROI on all the calculations I’ve done here in the U.K. is around 10 years. I’d have to pay £15000 for a system like that, so again assuming 5% growth in investments, that would be worth over £27,000 which really the electricity savings have to match by then to make it worthwhile.
