In motor racing, the bigger the wallet, the bigger the chance of crossing the line first. The fact that any person on a limited budget, can build and drive a truly unique kart, with a historic car as its inspiration and backstory and then "compete it, all be it within moderation, is what appeal to me. I sincerely hope this never changes and that in Australia we keep these ideals...

I'm 55 and I'm sure I'm not the only one my age older or younger that has or had that urg. Our cars like lots of our wind up toy Aircraft were actually Balsa wood. Like you wind ups powered buy a rubber band. You don't see that simple fun toy anymore. It's all plastic. Hours of fun until they crashed into something too often .

Steve there are some things that are confusing me. There is an in car-video from the 2017 Gordon Bennet race where the person filming started near the back of the field and passed everyone within half a lap. He just up and ran away from the field. It's obvious that he is doing something much different. So how does he do it? The car (#77) is sort of unique with air cleaners and pipes sticking out the hood. That same car shows up on video from Tieton, so how does he run there if the rules are so tightly enforced? I've also seen videos with cars running a Lifan engine which is considerably more powerful than the Honda. This is suppose to be fun but it won't be much fun if you put 1,000 hours into a car just to have no chance against the guys putting in a little more engineering. I also notice that you and Dennis Thomas have videos out there doing performance mods to your engines. So how do I make sense of all this? Where are the real boundaries, or are there any?
@stevevinson6030
2 жыл бұрын
Yes, Dennis and I and many other builders have done some minor improvements to the motor. These are considered OK and within the guidelines. Commonly referred to as Stage 2. Governor Delete, Timing Key, header and upgraded Carb and air filter. Internal mods: cams, pistons and machining are not considered OK> Dennis upgraded a cam, but went back to stock as there was not increase in performance. The kart you are referring to at Tieton is a very light and fast kart, it has no engine mods. The driver of that kart combined with a very low center of gravity make all the difference. What I was trying to get across is that if you have the cyclekart attitude, you will have more fun to stay within the guidelines. If you desire is only to win every race......well maybe shifter karts are better suited for your goals.

The reasons are many. Primarily these karts are dangerous exactly how they are . These are not RACING machines. Do some guys sup up their motors and improve the brakes....yes. Does it make them faster.....no. The limits of the brakes are the contact patch of the tires. All they do is leave long black steaks on the pavement all the way to the scene of the crash. I'm joking....but not really. The overarching ethos of cyclekarts it Art first, Racing Around second. If you are good with that, then welcome to the club, glad to have you.

@stevevinson6030
Жыл бұрын
Lots of big guys in the hobby. Just build the kart so you can fit and get in and out without too much trouble. The front suspension is plenty strong and the brakes work better than people think. The biggest issue with braking performance is the the tires. There is very little tire touching the ground, so the brakes lock up very easily.

@stevevinson6030

@@therussmccurdy2602 I have seen only one wheel Taco, it failed because the spokes were not maintained properly. Yes, side loading can cause issues, I know of a few karts that weigh over 350 pounds plus the driver that have no issues. Just keep in mind the potential for failure and it will help you drive your kart in a manner that will make it last a lot longer. I have broken many spokes, so I upgraded my spokes to an 8ga spoke and it is a lot stronger.

Steve, you get me wrong, I'm 65 years old and have no desire to get into something like a shifter kart. I don't want to be in a position to win every race. Yes I am competitive, but not to that extreme. It's no fun if the results are a forgone conclusion. That's my point, if you already know who's going to win it's not going to be any fun. I don't want to do what the guy in #77 is doing. Maybe you should take a look at the video again. Here is the link kzitem.info/news/bejne/0atsl4l_pYxyn2U then try to tell me with a straight face that he has a car that is a little lighter with a lower center of gravity and he's just that much better driver than everyone else but he doesn't have any more engine than the rest of the field.
@stevevinson6030

I have driven that kart and I am telling you with a straight face. It is fast, yes. The primary difference is that the guys who built that kart, drive it on the absolute edge of sanity. They have since learned their lesson. That was their first time driving a cyclekart at an event. Many guys on their first go think that it is about winning. After a weekend of running, many guys suddenly get what this is all about. Some never 'get it' sadly. It really is all about fun, don't let that one video keep you from enjoying yourself.

So sad. When I first came across cycle carts I felt I could be competitive spending abour 2500 bucks. Affordable fun racing with others in exactly the same spec cars. Awesome. And instead it has devolved into a car that is over engineered and super esxpensive. I want to to see how much you have sopent on these cars. Expensive alloys, complex suspensions. Hand made custom bodies. FFS way to make a fun grassroots everyman's racing series into another rich guy hobby. FACK!

You can build anyway you want. I have not spent more than $2500 on my first cyclekart, inflation now makes those same parts closer to $3500. If you build it the way the Stevensons did back in 1995, you will spend about $2500, that is with a plywood body and crappy Azusa spindles and hubs, you will have to bend or weld your own front axle and source springs from a scrap yard. But it can be done for cheap, many have done it.
@RomanBuchok
11 күн бұрын
@@stevevinson6030 Ok I get you can build a car for that. The problem is as a driver / racer can you be competitive in a 2500 dollar car against those that spend 5,000 10,000 or more.

Yes, absolutely they can. I have never seen a CycleKart that I thought cost more than $4k in parts to build, that is for a kart with every bell and whistle, most of the expensive stuff doesn't make it faster.
