State legislatures are a key partner in the provision of the transportation systems and services that drive metro regions and their economies. State governments (and their local government partners) are responsible for nearly 75% of total U.S. expenditures on transportation, and that share has been increasing over time. In a study titled "Fiscal Opportunities for Transportation in a Shifting Energy Landscape: The Role of State Legislators," University of Texas at Austin researchers talk directly with state lawmakers working in transportation to understand how state legislatures are (and aren’t) positioned to address key challenges facing the transportation sector, including the ongoing transition away from petroleum-based fuels.
