Never was a fan of breaking in engines. I just do the 20 minutes of cam break in then gradually give more and more fun pedal. I also use that 20 minutes to get carbs adjusted. I usually hit red line on 1st drive unless I feel tune is off. The rest of the time I'm only on the fun pedal after engine is completely warmed up and have never had a problem 😁

I like it! Won’t lie, I went pretty hard in it soon after the vid. So far so good. I love to hear break in testimonies so thanks for the info!

@@bomberobus Yeah old mechanic I knew from the 60s told me running engine for 20 minutes to break in cam is a waste of 20 minutes if you don't use that time to fine tune the engine. He also said the sooner you break in engine the less likely you will get blow- by and washout your bearings. He also stated every time you start a cold engine you run it like you are breaking it in till it's at operating temperature then enjoy. It has served me well for over 50 years. Back when I owned my 2 bugs a few of my friends had them also including my girlfriend who's my wife now. Bugs were everywhere and we used to play games in them like follow the leader. We drove them everywhere including through the woods. Most we did to them was mechanical cause they were fairly new and in good shape Back then. Building a naturally aspirated engine, VW's made you look like some kracker Jack mechanic . Unless doing some build that includes a turbo or a supercharger NOTHING is as satisfying as building a vw bug engine !

@@bomberobus true. I’ve owned for over 25 years. It deserves a pan off restoration. I’m getting close on the bus. Was thinking I might borrow the engine from the bug to put in the bus, just so I can drive it and then I can get started on the bug and all the other projects I have lined up. Jaaa. Not sure. I don’t wanna start piecing out the bug but we’ll see since that is gonna be a looong project with body work involved.😆

I heard that. I wish I was a good body man, but it’s a big dell just keeping them running proper so I’ll stick to that. I wish I could pan off all of them but it’s just not realistic right now. Your Bus is project is going great man I love that thing!

What I rigged up for a dial gauge is this , I took a piece of plywood and cut it 11/4 wide drilled a hole that the gauge fit tight in and its as long as the pulley is wide . I got 2 mini C clamps and shoot it through the holes in the pulley to the case half . I did not have the right shims and mine ended up at .0025 its kinda tight but it hasn't locked up .

Was watching another video of yours. You were having issues with oil filled regulator. I bought and installed one and am trying troubleshoot why engine hiccups stalls as I get on it. At first regulator was showing 3psi, now I have nothing but still running. Real perplexing. Wondering if I have to jet, or just keep messing with carb to find sweet spot
@bomberobus
2 жыл бұрын
Yeah the heat seems to really affect the oil filled gauges, so I took that gauge out once I had proper psi. I wonder if when you disconnected your fuel line to hook up a gauge if you got trash in your idle jet. But I don’t know, could be dirty jets, wrong jets, 009 flat spot, valve lash, timing….the list (and fun) goes on 😂

How you have those balls on the antennas back when they had the Taco Bell chihuahua i got a little one at the dollar store that was a bobble head one . I pulled off the head and filled it with red silicon and put it on mine . Gravity made it goop down and drip .It look like blood . People would see it and say OMG gross .
