I'm dumbstruck why there are so many dislikes to this video. Have a look at other 'rod fishing' clips where big fish are caught and the dislikes are almost non existent. This guy is the shit and as a spearo and fisherman I aspire to be like him. Well done lad for the record, I will be dreaming of this for years to come.

Some of these comments are so damn annoying. So I signed in to rant. 1) Q-Why did he hit it in the tail first? A-Becuase if he missed the head, he would have one hell of a ride behind that marlin. If anyone has ever fished Marlin, they would know how hard they fight. It is safer to go for the tail, because if you miss, there is less chance of skewering it and a higher chance of just missing into the water. A tail hit immobilizes to a great extent, allowing them to get much closer to it and go for the kill shot. Also, if he shot it in a non lethal, non immobilizing place, and tried to get close to it, he runs a chance of getting skewered himself. 2) Q- OMG such magnificent ohh noo don't kill, why not kill small fish=less cruel? A- An emotional statement with no logical basis. Confirmed liberal. Would like everyone to know New Zealand has some of the best eco conservation programs in the world, and doesn't allow the commercial fishing of Marlin. The numbers of Striped Marlin in New Zealand have dramatically increased since the ban, and New Zealand has some of the healthiest, largest Striped Marlin in the world. This is a completely renewable practice in New Zealand, with Marlin that are released (75% of them, yes 2/3) being tagged and tracked in order to give the gov't knowledge on movements and pop numbers for conservation purposes. So please, stop being little whiny pricks who live in a high rise apartment in some big city, and actually add a little logic to your thinking. Or at least refrain from breeding, for all our sakes. 3) To the Max Payne guy-have you even ever been to New Zealand? Didn't think so. Probably don't get out of your mom's basement much, you 32 year old keyboard warrior. 4) For everyone else- You're a vegan? Fine, I respect that. But don't try to push your beliefs on everyone else especially when they aren't warranted, or logical (In this case, overfishing is a real problem, but not with Marlin in NZ). Also, to the people that have a problem with the morals of hunting wild game but have no problem eating a factory farm burger or chicken, go watch Food Inc. The way brands like Tyson and National Beef raise and slaughter meat in 1000X crueler than this spearfishing video you guys bitch about. Marlin also lack c-nociceptor fibers, which means if they do feel pain, it is much less severe and most likely very different from how we feel pain. So no, imagining your leg getting shot with a speargun does not = a fish getting shot in the tail, or anywhere else for that matter. Rant end>

For all those people saying this is inhumane, this is life. We have been intelligent hunters for thousands of years, killing animals of all kinds for food and even sport. This has not changed since the dawn of humanity, but due to recent advancements in technology, the public can now observe the process. Just because you can see the process of hunting doesn't mean it is suddenly malicious in intent. If you do not want to be disturbed by such "inhumanity," simply do not watch the video, as people have been doing for thousands of years before you.
@robertenever5420
10 жыл бұрын
This isn't intelligent hunting, nor is it necessary. It’s showing off. You can’t maturely argue the “we have always done it point” and fail to consider the argument in context of where we are TODAY. We haven't always been in a position where 85% of global fish stocks are overexploited, depleted, fully exploited or in recovery from exploitation. These guys didn't need to take out this fish, it’s declining in numbers and IUCN listed. We should be using our social media to change people’s attitudes and gain respect and support for our dwindling fisheries. Trophy hunting videos like this, which essentially fail to instil these values, are counterproductive in achieving these goals. These relatively wealthy guys, have a responsibility, whether they recognise it or not, to act dutifully with regards to our resources. So instead of ratifying the needless killing of a dwindling species, they should either: 1) target sustainable fish or 2) Promote/work to improve the conservation status of their favoured sport fish. I do agree that people should be able to stomach watching an animal die. It's just more difficult to stomach when it’s a declining stock species killed for fun. Cheer, Rob
@mrt4755

Robert Enever there's not millions of ppl spear fishing its harvesting on mass thats the problem and most hunters land or sea have far greater respect and care for these animals then some tree huger in a big city who has no idea wtf hes talking about
@robertenever5420
10 жыл бұрын
MR t Firstly, I'm not a tree hugger who lives in a big city. I live on the coast, spearfish, surf, dive etc etc. I have worked in the commercial fishing industry (as a scientist) for over 10 years so there is no need to preach on the causes of the problem either. But I think you have missed my point. This video did absolutely nothing to demonstrate respect or care for this species, quite the contrary. It had no regard for the wider implications (see previous posts). It was showing off at the cost of a declining species. Ugly. Going forward, these videos will be considered grotesque by the younger, more educated generation, just as this generation now consider trophy hunting for African animals an ugly facet of the past. Cheers, Rob

@robertenever5420
10 жыл бұрын
MR t Mr T. I hunt. I know what it’s like to kill something. You get a buzz, that’s fine. Just choose what you kill. Get educated and responsible before you go out. The population is in decline, and numbers are now below a sustainable level - not because of spearfishing, granted. But that doesn't mean your responsibility towards what you catch somehow disappears because the problem is not entirely your fault. The fish taken out here was probably a female, highly fecund (produces lots of eggs) and was as big as they get - see figure 1 below. It was an important fish to the population. Figure 2 shows the state of the stock (till 2005). P.s - No, I don't think they should cry and pray for the animals soul - grow up. They should get educated, selective and more responsible in what they kill. Well I'm a greeny and conservationist in New Zealand, we have Striped Marlin. The facts are that they are not under threat, especially by spearfisherman. I don't agree with killing something for the claim, however if the fish is being eaten then I don't see the issue... Its not under threat. No death is nice, commercially or in a freezing works. Roughly a quarter of large pelagic fish die after being caught on line and released. People need to stop expressing their empty opinions.

Pey Tron As I heard, shooting the tail breaks the hydrodynamics of the fish and makes it easier to catch and finish the fish. You can try to kill it with one shot in the head, but if you don't, then it's quite a mess. I myself spearfish and I would never try to shoot such an amazing fish, too big, too magnificent, too everything... And I don't really understand people looking for the biggest catch ever. But at least I think there is a logic in this two-times kill.

Pey Tron First time that i see someone shooting the tail but from what i see on a big fish like that it seems effective. We usually try to shoot on the body near the head where the fish is thick. Mary you have to be very very lucky to kill a fish with a shot.

I used to spearfish and I love fin swimming. But this was not for food but glory. A superb specimen that could have lived had even a dozen anglers caught it. I seriously doubt that shitty little boat had refrigeration enough to preserve that much fish, so far from land, before it spoiled.
