Well I'm from Washington DC and lived and traveled most of India in the 2000s. Good ole Kevin's attitude is NYC style. They're nice but don't mess with them. Being polite isn't what NY is famous for haha. You had every right to ask him to speak slower. After all you're the customer and paid for the tour. Ole Kevin's probably never been to a country and tried to understand their language. Anyway I like your videos because you give a good understanding of where you are and a bit of history and background. Much better than other videos I've seen. I like the Serbia ones too as I used to live in Poland and their language and style seems similar. Keep moving on my friend and don't worry about grumpy Kev. I know different people have different accents but you can speak a bit slowly without changing your accent. I myself don't have problem understanding English. But if I'm paying for a service and if I have any inconveniences I'll definitely ask for a change. Even in America less than 70% people have English as their native language. Considering this was a tour bus for people coming around the world would you make jokes on that ? When I first time landed in Chicago my taxi driver was Chinese and i didn't understand a single word he said what should i do in such situation? Respect Chinese culture and not understand what the man said ?? He wouldn't understand the address and at the end he asked for 20$ tip and refused to open my luggage trunk until I gave him 15$ finally.

Varun bro, If he was sitting beside you and personally talking ONLY with u, and you were not understanding him, then it would have been completely fine to request him to speak a little slower. But, he was giving a tour and speaking in front of everyone. And while everyone have no problem understanding his accent and are listening to him patiently, you cut him off in middle and ask him to speak slower JUST FOR YOU. Its absurd to expect him to change his accent/speed just for you. So it was actually YOU being rude to him ! You could have just accepted that its unfortunate you cant understand him and kept to yourself. And he handled it well by making light of the situation by saying if he speaks slowly, it would take all day. If you don't have a sense of humor, that doesn't mean he is humiliating you. If you can give your opinion in front of everyone, why can't he right ? And moreover he came to you later and asked if you were good and genuinely tried to reason himself without getting angry. But you were still saying that you were NOT GOOD, and you were humiliated. Come on Varun ! Its not good to be so self-centered and stiff all the time. I am sure you had many good experiences in USA, so it was unnecessary of you to make a personal attack on him saying "He insulted me" in the title. Its fine if you talk about general lifestyle and culture which you don't like in USA. But please refrain from posting such personal attacks. Does it feel good to put such a title and then have your 375k subscribers supporting you and talking bad about Kevin ? (I can already see many people bashing Kevin). I am only telling all this because I like your vlogs more than vlogger in India. Thats why I am just a little disappointed in you. Hope you can take my words in a positive way and try to understand. I think the tour guide even had a problem with Varun making the video and being loud while recording his commentary which actually is disturbing and distracting to others, one could easily make out that the family sitting alongside Varun were not feeling comfortable by his recording and all. But yes, the guide should hve not treated him like that, he should hve simply said he couldn't do anything abt it and felt sorry for it. Guide was loud spoken and his personality is such. He didn’t mean anything bad. He went into defensive mode when he was corrected in front of all customers. Maybe going close to him and requesting to him to lower the speed of speaking might have been better. There is history of Abuse to African Americans in past, so they tend to go on defensive or protection mode. I apologize on behalf of New York and Kevin. Thank you 🙏 for lovely vlog... If you thought you were polite, you need to learn a lot....The way you requested him to slow down sounded like you're entitled to everyone's service...Even to my Anglicised Indian ears, it didn't sound right....And then you went on to ask the Mexican what he'll do in Staten Island..... Extremely nosy and I could make out the look of bewilderment on his face...Stop throwing your weight around for heaven's sake! The tour guide here replied to you...Had this been in Paris, they wouldn't even bother noticing someone who has such bearings....I would have personally approached him, made friends and said something like..."hi, I believe I missed what you said about that building over there" ... then when he replied, I would say, "thanks buddy.....I'm trying to catch up with the accents, you know, but not quite there...." And then smiled in a friendly way....Instead of telling him how he ought to deliver his tour in front of other passengers. To the Mexican if I wanted to start a conversation, I would say..." Are you sightseeing like me by any chance or on business?" Again with a smile....Instead of bluntly asking why he's headed where he is.....Get your bearings man before blaming and throwing tantrums.

I am not able to understand!" it bit aggressive by US standards) Just stand up and approach him gently with smile and speak slow and use phrases like "would you please" or "Sir is it possible for your to" You sure can't force him to speak slowly, if he is not comfortable doing it he won''t. Thing is ,he asked that to a TOURguide, not to an ordinary citizen. He paid for the tour, so he could ask that. The TOURguide should have had the maturity to know that tourists from other parts of the world may not have their ""STANDARDS OF MANNERISM"". Many a times tourists who come to india also laugh on indian accents and mannerisms. But indian tourguides never speak to them so irresponsibly or arrogantly. Understand the point ,that he asked so from the TOURguide ,not an ordinary citizen. He paid for the service and he had the right to ask . Furthermore, the TOURguide proceeded to mock him and insult him. That is not something expected from a tourguide for just asking to slow down his speech. It is imminent for the TOURguide to know that tourists from other parts of world may not even be accustomed to their accents ,forget in fast pace. On top of it to insult the tourist is a very unwelcoming act. And grow a sense of self esteem instead of expecting an indian to act like a coward cow tow noob.

When in Rome… What else would you expect from local tour guides? To adapt to every tourist’s ears? You’re in a developed nation that is very individualistic 😎. They won’t bend over backwards because you’re a tourist. It demands your acceptance and your adjustment to their ways, not their adjustment to yours. At the end of the day that chap works for money, he wouldn’t give two hoots about sentiments of showing his city to a tourist! This unfortunately is the bitter pill to swallow in every developed nation.

I feel.. it is important to absorb new cultures and surroundings more than confrontation... and its just not in USA. It happens in all countries wherever we are outside of our home country. Imagine a foreigner talking rude to tour guides in India.It is difficult for them to understand our accent. But do they confront ? Nope. Foreign tourists are more accepting and accomodating It takes time to understand their accent, so for me here personal confrontation was not required ! It is important to take all the positives of this trip and embrace the country as it is !! Otherwise the guy is doing really good in helping the fellow indians, who are not conversant going abroad in different countries.!
@chandruishwar1

He made a request , there are ways to deny it, definitely it is not right way the way he did it. Confrontation was required as he needs somethings to learn which the school did not teach him. everybody knows they have to learn the language and get used to it when they are in different country, but for gods sake he providing a service it is not like asking a favor, i can speak at any pace if someone asks me to, i dont go on making fun of it. there is lot to learn when it comes to hospitality especially if you are guiding tourists. there is nothing wrong in the video except the tourist guide.

Try to step in the shoes of the tourist narrator guy. He does this trip daily many times and so it’s in his mind like a cassette which he plays. It is conditioned to be at the speed of the bus . If he slows down the venues will pass by and he won’t be able to catch up or miss important details. Both of this would do injustice to other passengers and his performance could be questioned by someone. There was one big mistake where it all started . You asking him to slow down. Comeon if you go to a Arabic country and they speak arabic will you tell them to change the language . No right ? It depends on the setting and who is the outsider and are you a minority. If the bus was full of Indians or everyone had the same complaint meaning you were majority then surely he would have heeded to ur advise. But in this case. No. Infact he may have got offended as your statement was not corrective then suggestive for him

Dear 'him'.. thanks for stating the obvious.. it's not about preferring one over the other.. Im sure you must be an avid traveller and will surely understand that one can't expect to be treated equally on buying a train ticket in india against a flight ticket. It's like paying for roadside food and expecting it to caress your pallet like fine dining would. Both the dishes are good in their own right but it's about what they entail. Cheers.

Dear varun, I have seen lots of your videos, & they are nice, But in this video as a student of psychology i must tell you that it's actually your fault as you have been touring whole US for FREE. Now here since you paid for the first time therefore you became hyperactive about the fact that your pocket got lighter. On the otherhand, the other Guy was completely natural & talking in his natural accent. Your behaviour is just the outcome of your ultra stingy habit. Otherwise your vlogs are interesting. Cheers

I also thought so! I could understand Kevin perfectly ( whichever in this video was audible). Varun is making a scene for small reason. None of other tourists in the bus were complaining at all....

If you guys are visiting any big us city just explore by yourself. The big buses and duck boats are a tourist trap. You get more freedom and experience by walking around.

Varun you did the wrong thing here. You sound entitled and that's totally unacceptable. If you don't understand his English, it's not his fault. How would you feel if someone asked you to speak slowly because they don't understand you? And then ask you to repeat yourself because you have a "weird" accent? You've done well so far. Don't ruin it. You will not find more friendly people in the world than in the US.

IT WAS GOOD OF YOU TO GIVE THE GUIDE BACK. Aise logon se aise hi baat ki jaati hai. Yeh log apne aap ko bahut smart samajhte hai.I hope you have given him a negative feedback, so he will be advised by his seniors to be more courteous to tourists.

My personal experience in NY has been very bad. I stayed there for a month. Why would a paying tourist be treated like that? Basically, he is asking you to pay and also see to his comfort. Rude people. Not worth of tourist dollars.

I dont think he was making fun of you , when he was acting to speak slow he was just making fun , You could have taken this lightly, may be you could turned it into a humor. but you took it as a hummilation. When driver asked where you from, your reply was so monotonous. You should be more playful with people then they will definitely do your favour .

The problem was in his speed not in his accent and Varun asked Kevin to slow down a bit but not to change his accent. And, as a guide Kevin is bound to accommodate to Varun's request if possible. But, here Kevin didn't accommmodate and even mocked Varun. Varun never overreacted. And, don't say me that mocking and not accommodating is in US/ New York's culture.

If you face such a situation next time on these buses, simply hop off the bus at your next stop and hop on the next incoming bus, eventhough you might have to wait for 15 - 20 mins. Better than sitting on a bus and not able to appreciate the information and getting the constant beam of negative energy from an unprofessional guide. And if understanding an accent is difficult ,choose the pre-recorded guided tours which have commentary pre-recorded than the Live commentary guided tours. Usually the pre recorded ones have a neutral accent and often speak slow for the general public to comprehend. Happy travelling!:)
