YES!! Fare-capping starting any day of the week just make so much sense! I wish Toronto's subway does that. Our regional transit (LIRR/PATH-ish systems) does that but It's also distance-based fares which is prob why fares make up more of its revenue than the subway Of course, tourists will benefit from any-day fare-capping but so will the New Yorkers with odd work schedules, of which I'm sure NYC has many Toronto moved from turnstiles to swinging gate doors a while back. 1) It's ironic that the total to be collected from the MTA fare increase almost exactly matches the revenue lost from fare evasion. All due means to enforce fare collection will benefit all riders-- and there are programs available for low-income riders to help them legally ride mass transit. 2) New Jersey residents (and I'm one of them) who gripe about the congestion charge conveniently forget that every time they do use NY mass transit, their ride is being subsidized by the entire state of NY... without a dime contributed by their own state. 3) Reduced congestion in Manhattan will ultimately mean lower parking charges, less time stuck in traffic, less pollution, fewer traffic accidents and fatalities and a host of other benefits that are not part of the raw dollar calculations. 4) Mass transit in NYC is one of the best travel bargains in the entire country.

There is a lot of nuance to it but overall I believe having congestion pricing will bring a net benefit. The whole point is that people are less incentivized to drive their cars now, which from an environmental standpoint is great and should drastically decrease pollution. People have been driving cars for decades without having to pay for the externalities created by said cars and now the true cost of driving a car is being accounted for. All of this should lead to more people using public transit to go to work and New Jersey will have to expand their transit system if they want to keep young professionals living there instead of NYC.

I don't think congestion pricing is appropriate, though, because it still allows private vehicles into the city and thus devote streets to private cars. I say completely ban private 4-wheeled vehicles from the city.

@@adamblack6867 Gas tax and vehicular licensing on private cars only pays about 60% of the cost of roads. The rest is covered by income and sales taxes. Drivers haven't been paying their fair share of roads now and not for a very long time. Go out of NYC, and you'll see oodles of free parking for drivers; that free parking spot is baked into the cost of goods regardless of whether you own a car. As a conservative, I don't mind drivers doing what they will; I just don't think they should freeload and get handouts. They need to pay their fair share instead of being heavily subsidized by people who don't own cars.

15 cents a ride increase. With the fare cap people will pay upwards of a maximum of $1.80 more a week. Anyone that complains about that much of a hike after almost a decade I will personally charge $1.80 to talk to me. Any anyone thinks that the money problem is people jumping turnstiles should take a good long look at the state budget and realize how in favor of upstate it is. New Jersey people that have a problem with congestion pricing, I invite to take the several buses and trains that go from NJ to NY and back. Driving is expensive and Manhattan is packed with cars. Keep your cars out of our city.

On the subject of fare evasion, I have observed a new trick - when a bus stops to discharge passengers, the exit door opens, too, and that's where fare thieves enter and go straight to their seats, preferably near the back, get busy with their smartphones as if it was the most natural thing to do.
