Those unit patches aren't something you earn. You have to buy them yourself for your uniform depending on which unit you are currently assigned to. The only thing you earn are medals and ribbons, and even then you most of the time have to buy the thing at the PX because all you got was the commendation letter saying you earned it.

The medals being sent is both Cool and Tragic. 1. It is tragic in the sense that his letter seemed to say that in his own offspring and grandchildren, no one had any interest in inheriting them. 2. The cool part is that he saw in Denzel someone who would honor them and the memory of who they belonged to. I would suggest when you do a display case, you write back to him either through email or letter and ask what his Branch, ending rank, and unit were and then get a placard to attach to the case with his name, rank, and starting and ending service dates. This could help in historical preservation.

I have been struggling a lot and seeing this mail time episode made me tear up, y’all are so humble and grateful. Y’all definitely are the best and many thanks go to those subscribers that can send packages to y’all. One day I will send a package and letter when life balances out. Y’all did pronounce Louisville right! I hope one day y’all will be able to come to The States and I believe a bunch of us NZetters would love to help ya tour the US or have a meet and greet. Y’all are such patriotic Americans and a lot of us here miss that spirit. Definitely enjoy those challenge coins and military badges, I always appreciate the history behind them when I read up on them or talk to someone in the military. Appreciate y’all’s videos and love y’all ever so much!

It's fun to watch you guys open all the packages. The military patches for the 9th Inf Div and the 7th Inf Div are the subdued colors worn on the combat uniform. When worn on the dress uniform they are full color. The 9th Inf Div "flower" part has one red (the top) and one blue (the bottom). The rest of the patch is the olive green color. The 7th Inf Div patch is bright red and the "hourglass" is black. You can google them to see them in color. I don't see a way to include them in this comment. I was in the Army for over 26 yrs and served in Korea, Vietnam, Hawaii, Germany, Panama, and several places in the USA. I was in at least 17 different units during my time in the Army, including Air Defense Artillery (missiles), Infantry, Aviation (helicopters), Hawaii National Guard (Infantry), Field Artillery, ROTC at Youngstown State University in Ohio, the Army Quartermaster School in Virginia, and the School of the Americas in Panama. It's great to see someone excited about military insignia and it was very generous of Richard to send you those things.

Generally, every 2 to 4 years you're shipped off to a different unit in the military. That way nobody either gets stuck with a lousy assignment or gets privileged with an easy one for their whole career . It also helps prevent corruption, and it lends to training as most every unit has a different mission.

California has many biomes in it which range from: chaparral, temperate coniferous forests, mountains, and desert. I grew up in Lancaster California. It is in Southern California and is located in the Mojave desert in the Antelope Valley. One of the best parts of living there is you are within 3 hours of many different habitats (I can't think of the proper word). You have the Mojave desert, the Angeles national forest, many beaches and lakes, the San Bernadino mountains, the San Gabriel mountains, and The Tehachapi mountains. It can reach up to 115 F (46.1 C) and in the winter it can snow on average 1-5 inches but I can remember several feet of snow while growing up. Most of the time though if you want snow you can easily drive up to the mountains and have a fun snow day and then drive back to the valley where it is warm.

The coins are very special, often handed out via a handshake. Soldiers, sailors airmen etc., are profoundly appreciative and feel that credit was given for a job well done. They keep those as a momento and a reminder of their service.
