I was in the Air Force Security Forces for 9 years. I was there when the very first women came through the academy and into the career. To add definition, in the 80's there were two branches of Security. Law Enforcement, which are like regular police, traffic cops, domestic issues, regular crime. Then there were the Security Specialists, who were responsible for the assets, weapon systems, ammunition, war capability. Women were allowed in L.E. but not in SPS, partly because of a secondary function of SPS known as ABGD or Airbase Ground Defense. This is one of the Three ground Combat units of the Air Force. Combat Air Controllers like Msgt John Chapman who's heroics you've already reacted to. Para Rescue, and Air Base Ground Defense units. We were responsible for Securing the Perimeter of the entire base complex out for at least 3 km outside to provide a blocking force against ground penetration. Women weren't considered for this job for several reasons. Field environment means no privacy for human functions, also most men will take unnecessary risks when it comes to protecting a woman, and some of those actions can become deadly to the entire team and the integrity of the Defense. Lastly it was that women were considered incapable of the physical requirements, for example, some of the weapons we employed were very heavy and awkward and women would struggle to pick them up, run for long distances and set them back up, only to repeat the process multiple times. Personally I had no problem with women being allowed in. My problem was that they relaxed the standards to accommodate females rather than requiring them to rise to the standards. They were also cottled and given less physical jobs so that it quickly devolved to the attitude that they wanted the title of SPS/ABGD, but they didn't want the labor involved. It was an area if contention. One training incident, I had a young lady in my squad who tripped while trying to carry the M-60 machine gun she was assigned. She injured her arm and ankle so needless to say, her weapon had to be carried by someone else, her Alice Pack had to be carried by someone else, and her person has to be carried by someone else. Me! I carried her in my back, through the woods, for 8 miles to where we could meet with a rescue vehicle and get her to the hospital. N is before you say, well that could happen to a guy as well as a girl, I carried her, while limping along with a wrenched knee from her crashing into me during her fall. After transferring her to the rescue, i continued the exercise for another 8 hours to completion. Bottom line, She wasn't ready for the physical aspects and she jepordized the Op. That being said, I have served with some incredible women who took the title serious, spent time on the gym and one the track, building their strength and endurance so as to be able to cope. I had and have tremendous respect and admiration for those who refused to be soft handled, demanded to be tasked and burdened equally with their male teammates, and did the work necessary to be an asset to the team. Shoot, we even provided them with a screened off area free of peekers, to allow a degree of privacy for field baths, and latrine. God you should have heard the griping about that, especially when the men didn't get the same. Its one of those man things you know.

Even your own strength might surprise you if you needed it, -during my recovery from a medical adventure as a resident of a nursing home, I wasn't allowed to walk the 15 feet from my bed to the bathroom without my walker, and a nurse, or aide as an escort. I was more than a bit unstable(in more than 1 way, according to some...)being in a halo wasn't a big help when it came to balance, and a good fall at the time could easily have been fatal, thus I had no arguments with the idea. Once, upon getting up, I took one step, and having stood up too quickly, completely lost it, and started down,( I am by the way 6'3 "-not small) . The strength that cute little girl used was amazing, I never made it down very far. It kind of gave her, myself, and my wife who was there a bit of a jolt. I am now feeling just fine and can do pretty much what I want, other than moving my head much in any direction, no big deal when you get used to it, I had always viewed a halo as something horrible to even think of-not so, really wasn't bad, a bit cumbersome, and a bother at times, though I would add that for anyone facing that prospect, should such a person have questions, I would be happy to answer what I could, as when I was told that was in my future I was very scared of the thought. Courtney, I very much enjoy your site, and your thoughtful reactions, you being a lovely young lady does no harm....

I know this has nothing to do with the video, but seeing the stuff in your hotel room reminds me of the 16 years I spent working for a TV production company that produced travel shows. We would spend weeks and sometimes months traveling all over the world, living for weeks at a time in hotel rooms. Seems like every time we were coming to the end of a stay somewhere, our hotel rooms looked like a hurricane had come thru!! And I've met plenty of women who could very easily kick my ass (including my late wife) and I have no problem admitting that!

With the women in combat positions, how often do they get deployed? And is it the same assignment, as a man would receive? I understand, that there are many many roles surrounding this (support, logistics, etc.) and I am all for it, that women should be also filling those positions. But I have no real knowledge about the most dangerous jobs. Good thing strengh was brought up. Is this an issue, or are they able to carry a wounded solder away from the heat of the fight, when needed? I would have a tough time carry someone, but I am untrained. They on the other hand do a lot of sports, so maybe it's not an issue? Idk, just wanted to ask :)

Actually, most military occupations are less about muscles and more about brains and stamina. (Giving birth to a baby is about stamina.) You need to go to the American embassy, apply for residency, and join our Army. The Army has more helicopters than the Air Force has plains, and it has a brigade (in Virginia) with boats. Yet, I think you already know what you would be good at doing. If the military takes you in, its too expensive to let you do anything but succeed. Four years later, you'll be home with a story to tell. If you already have college, try being a warrant officer. (PS: Check out the Women's Army Museum at Fort Lee in Virginia.)

Way easier to put a 5'2-5'8 woman in then a 6'1-6'5 dude in them jets.

When I was in junior high, we took a school trip to Annapolis. I remember seeing the students and recruits and thinking how I wanted to be like them and work in a submarine. The tour guide later explained that women weren’t allowed to be posted on submarines for “sanitary reasons.” Keep in mind, this was about 2004. I gave up on any military involvement after hearing that. Now that things like IUDs are more accessible, it’s a story I like to use to illustrate how reproductive rights are more than just about having children or not. It’s about equality in all senses, especially in the workplace. I bet there are some badass women navy submariners now!
