New Zealand holiday| On the road: Napier Art Deco City
Welcome to Napier, once my home. A city with many scars and also of courage. Of courage, survival, resilience. The residents are strong community minded and hospitable. Natural disasters aplenty - though nothing keeps them down.
After the 1931 Hawkes Bay Earthquake the city rallied and rebuilt a beautiful CBD consisting of many Art Deco style buildings. Annually there are fabulous dress up weekends celebrating the era.
Not to mention Gabrielle which was was felt over a wide area, including Northland, Auckland, the Coromandel, Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Gisborne/Tairāwhiti and Hawke's Bay. However, damaging rainfall, winds and flooding hit the Hawke's Bay and Gisborne/Tairāwhiti regions the hardest.
repair work is still being undertaken.
The Esplanade is lined with tall pines, the streets and gardens with palm trees. Marine Parade as the esplanade is known houses many attractions and lovely sitting areas including sunken gardens and a 'Sound Bell' -stage where musical evenings can be held. Pania ( on the Reef) a Maori legend telling the story of love and loss.
Taradale, the outer suburb, with it's famous Mission Winery where outdoor concerts are held. Since 2003 people like John Farnham, Belinda Carlisle, The B52's, Rod Stewart, Chris de Burgh, Olivia Newton John, Eric Clapton, Motown, Sting, Carole King and Barry Gibb. Not to be sneezed at.
Enjoy this predominantly nostalgic photographic journey through Napier and Taradale.
