I just had flash backs of playing musical chairs in school in the 70's when you were switching the pause on and off at 28:00. Thanks for the memories!

haaa. I've been to meunier electronics several times. While they still exist, they no longer allow walk-in business. Both electronics stores in town did that, so it's internet-only these days if I want anything. There's no more electronic stores left within a several hundred mile radius I don't think; mendelson's was the last biggie and they went EOL relatively recently. That record player was probably owned by IPS (indianapolis public school system) if I had to guess.

I've got a Newcomb RT-20V and it needed some work but NOTHING this bad. Really great classroom record player. Better than anything that is sold today (made in China). Paired with my Westinghouse "stereo fidelity" tube amp model H48SE2, they can really bring the house down with no distortion according to my neighbors.

Nice repair. These always sounded good, especially the older push-pull models. I think the original 6x9 speaker had a whizzer cone and a pretty decent build quality to them. I always wondered who built the original speakers that Newcomb used in their classroom phonos. It might even have been Quam but yeah, that one was definitely hacked in there.

In the early 80's I worked at Audiotronics, which I believe bought out or took over Newcomb. I could be wrong, but I believe the founder of Newcomb, Don Newcomb, came to work at Audiotronics---he had a sort of symbolic job and was respected as kind of a tribal elder at the plant. Helluva nice fellow, as well. They were both Los Angeles electronics companies. They both made near-indestructible classroom electronic stuff, not particularly interesting. It was too bad that Audiotronics did not take over the tube audio amplifier section of Newcomb. I used to fix stuff that came off the assembly line that didn't work right. Most of the time my job consisted of flipping around the diodes in 58 sets Consuela got backwards that day. But I also solved a giant problem the company had and had struggled with for months and was causing contract-threatening delays in their biggest contract. The chief engineer offered me a 25 cent an hour raise and I essentially walked out on the spot. In that era, it was easy to find another job, and I did, in 3 days.

I have never seen the Emitter Follower powered from Pin 1 before. You say not decoupling Pin 1 kills the Amplifier but I reckon it just makes the common mode rejection ratio worse. Well done on the repair Sir.

Sounds surprisingly good for an IC amp.I have been surprised at the power output of some of those. The new speaker sounds really good too.

I just bought two Newcomb record players for 20 bucks. One is from 1965, and the other one is from 1969. They both use tubes. The one from 1965 is a ED-10C, and the one from 1969 is a ED-10.

It is nice to see some new tunes! every time I hear a song that I do not have, I look into finding the original disk. 33, 45, 78... Too bad that guess who 45 "american woman": is not that rare, or I would be looking for the 33, or 45 rpm to buy.. James brown, also has a lot of disks that are easy for the most part to come by!

Great job as always it never seems to amaze m you can fix anything I have a question I know you build cartriden enhancing circuit so the level will get louder do you think that you can figure out how to make a circuit for a stereo magnetic input for a preamplifier with a variable volume control so I can adjust the level of the circuit going into the magnetic phono input on the pre amp if you can let me know what I need that would be great and I can build it I am disabled and I have. Been doing this to keep from issues from watching the tower go down and seeing a few friend jump out of the tower now I have depression thank you for any help and ideas what to do I. Love your channel keep up the great work all the best jon

I am currently trying to restore Newcomb RT 1225 V and I am wondering what safety cap value I need. Currently there is a .1 uf/600 V Cornell Dubilier across the hot and neutral. There is a three conductor power cord with the green wire is used for amplifier ground. Should I use the same capacitance x capacitor?

Hi. How does the pause control work? Is it a physical linkage from the control shaft to a brake on the motor, or is it electrical? It’s pretty neat that the power knob lights up when you turn it on; most sets have nothing, or a separate pilot light. 😊
@christo930

I think he said it pulls the idler wheel off of the drive motor
@lwilton

Usually a pause control lifts the drive idler so the motor can keep running, and then pushes a brake pad against the inside edge of the turntable. Without the brake the platter would probably spin a whole turn or more before coasting to a stop.

I thought a pause mechanism would simply lift the tone arm off the record and not the “more” complication of stopping it, I like the brightly glowing power/pause/pilot light dial ~ neon indicator/light bulb?
@lwilton

@@samuelfellows6923The general idea of pause on a classroom record player is that the teacher can be playing a record, get to a certain point, pause the record and have a class discussion about what they just heard, then the teacher can start playing again from where they paused, or at least close to that. An arm lift isn't a pause if the disk continues to turn, it's just an arm lift, which is a different control (if present at all).

Do you think it would be feasible take one of these lower priced mono classroom record players and convert it to stereo? maybe that would be a good video series to produce? I know stereo models were made but they are not readily available and are expensive when they come up for sale. Just a thought. Thanks for the videos!

@@christo930 I know. You can buy a small stereo amp module for just a few dollars if building one is out of the question. You can buy a stereo cartridge also for just a few dollars. add speakers. The tonearm wire would probably be the hardest item to get. The reason I brought this subject up is because I had a conversation with someone who wants to buy a Crosley. I said to them, why not look for one of these. They replied because it is not stereo. I wonder how many more people think that way. Just an idea

On another channel where they repair old tanks, they got their hands on a tank that had been used as a gate guard at some military base for decades, and was probably sold off when the rust got too thick to recognize it. The tank had been through a complete overhaul and modification shop just before being picked for gate guard duty. One of the things it had was a brand new engine, which passed all of the tests on the tank. So they took this effectively new tank and parked it in front of a military base. Of course someone might come along, start the tank, and steal it. Nobody would want that to happen. So they drained all the oil out of the brand new engine, started it, floored it, and ran it until it siezed up and threw a couple of rods. There was not one part on that brand new engine that was salvageable.
