I test drove the Telluride and I do like it a lot. But the things I didn't like was... 1: You need to go all the way to the SX just to get memory seats. 2: The suede headliner is a fingure print magnet. 3: The automatic starter can only be used through their app, which is also a paid service to have. ( I think it's about $200 a year.) 4: No all weather floor mat option. 5: They're to tough to buy, you need to put a order in which can be 2-4 months out plus put none refundable money down. 6: Dealers are trying to sell for over the sticker price. ( I personally had a dealer tell me the he was going to charge me $10k more just because of supply and demand, which just made me walk away.) So, if this list was factored in I believe the Ford would be the winner over the Telluride. ( Plus, just personal preference but I think the Ford's exterior profile is way better than the Telluride and I'm not a fan of Ford's.)

The Explorer with its new rear drive chassis rides, handles and out accelerates the Kia. It's tubo 4 has more power as well. It Tows more weight and does it easier due to rear drive. Sync 3 is also far superior. In a few years the KIA will be a rattle trap. I have a few friends who tried KIAs and thats what happens. An Explorer with 100k miles will still be a tight rattle free chassis. KIA needs a 100k warranty. You get what you pay for. The KIA tries to lull buyers with its lower price over the quality of a rear drive chassis and far better engineering.
@ginsure
5 жыл бұрын
Not in my experience. But KIA needs a long warranty that's why they offer it. I drive a lot and except for maintenance every car needs I spend no money on repairs. My explorer sport will out accelerate, out handle, out stop, and out tow any KIA suv. At 50k miles it is still tight as a drum. not a rattle to be found. There is a reason the Explorer is and has been the top selling SUV in this size class. It is simply the better SUV and now the new 2020 takes a giant leap forward to rear drive based. Its standard engine if more powerful than anything KIA has and you can step up to the ST with 400 HP. Its also the fastest and best handling police car there is. I don't see the Police buying any KIA's

Telluride wins by a wide margin. Explorer is a respectable family hauler, but Telluride is a luxury suv that is superior in tech, safety, styling, warranty, and value. Telluride is unlike other Kias in that it is far more luxurious, and was in fact engineered y staff hired from BMW and Mercedes. It looks like Range Rover in front, Lincoln on the side, Volvo or Caddy from behind, and the interior is like BMW and Mercedes. Explorer looks less innovative and plain by comparison. My friends call my Telluride a luxury limo with suv capabilities, while the Explorer seems far less luxurious and more like a rough truck. That doesn't mean Explorer is bad. It just means that Explorer lacks the luxury refinements of Telluride. Maybe that's why Telluride is Motor Trends suv of the year.

I personally love the explorer exterior design....and love the range rover style too but just personal preference....kia and hyundai are cool looking too. I made the mistake of driving the explorer platinum....3 liter twin turbo is addictive, and expensive but overall ride, quality of interior, all the nice additional features, I went with the explorer platinum. Have had it 4 months, 2500 miles, excellent off roading and is true 4wd, not awd (not hard core off-roading but pretty rough/muddy, rutty), nice ride BUT the power....Love it, super fun to drive, and 10 speed works very well for me. If you have a tight budget Kia very slightly edges Hyundai and of course ford but for pricier tons of fun, the platinum or st, although the st is a stiffer suspension, harder ride. And it's hard to really compare the internals, quality, etc, so just performance and looks can be deceiving....we'll see at 100k miles. Still love my platinum and enjoy driving it every day!! I work at a Ford/Kia dealership and I have compared the two systems. The Ford lane assist is part of their lane centering. The Explorer doesn't ping/pong you within your lane anymore, but it does make a lot more corrections to try to keep it centered and you can definitely feel it trying to where as the Telluride doesn't make a lot of corrections because it does a lot better job at keeping the vehicle center so you don't even notice that it's working. What both of them will do is deactivate the system as soon as the line on either side of the vehicle disappear (exit/merge lane) but will turn back on within seconds as soon as it starts seeing the markings.

The price difference is the EXACT amount every dealership is charging at KIA! A flat $6995 on telluride which puts both vehicles in basically the same price range.

Thanks for the review. Some things to consider. 1) For towing the Explorer is far more capable than the Telluride due to it's RWD-biased architecture. Ask anyone who tows vehicles, The same will hold true for off-road capability as well. Look at most vehicles in the marketplace and RWD-biased AWD systems are more expensive than FWD-biased AWD systems due to their better utility.

A tow rating of 5300 lbs in a vehicle with RWD architecture? That's hardly "far more capable" than the 5000 lb rating of the Telluride...Or for that matter the smaller KIA Sorento. Want to tow with a midsize SUV? The Doge Durango is rated at 8700 lbs and doesn't depend on a small displacement turbo 4 to do it. Bottom line is that Ford's shift to a RWD platform is tremendously disappointing in terms of the benefits it provides.

@@stephenhendricks103 A little Google knowledge with clearly little towing experience can be dangerous. Every vehicle is optimized for it's considered customer base. 1) That FWD-based KIA does not come with a HD engine oil cooler. 2) That Durango is on an old architecture (at least 10 years old) and is not as fuel efficient or safe in a crash. It's 2019 and Ford has experience with turbo 4 cylinders that are reliable and powerful. The Ford Ranger with same engine tows 7,500 lbs. Thanks for sharing

I wanted a Kia Telluride all wheel drive. They are super hard to find. One dealer bragged than he was charging 8K over MSRP. I almost bought it from a dealer who wanted to charge me only 3K over MSRP. Then I bought a Hyundai Palisade in Tracy and got WAY more options (fully loaded) at 500.00 UNDER MSRP. It is all wheel drive as well. It’s almost exactly the same, but a much better color. Got it all and saved a lot. My dealer probably could have easily sold my Palisade for thousands over MSRP as it was the only AWD within 100 miles of the Bay Area, but he chose to give me a great deal instead. I couldn’t find a KIA dealer who didn’t want more than MSRP on the AWD version. I will never buy a Kia.

Much of the price difference has to do with the platforms. FWD cars are usually less expensive to design and manufacture vs RWD. Had KIA used a RWD platform similar to the Stinger or K900 the price difference would be much closer. KIA saved a lot by using a more economical chassis and platform as well as an existing powertrain, they were able to focus more on the interior materials and details. Ford put more time and money into their RWD setup and tweaking the engine options to get the perfect combination of mpg and performance. The interior of the explorer is ok but you will spend a little more to get the upgraded infotainment system and interior design, Probably as much as you can get a brand new Lexus for.. That being said, the Explorer May drive, ride and handle a little better than most of the FWD competition.

A RWD platform (or RWD-biased AWD system) may well have superior driving dynamics in some situations. But its primary benefit is in terms of towing. Offering a measly 300 lbs greater tow rating than the Telluride and a full 2000+ lbs less than the Dodge Durango hardly makes it appealing for those who need a vehicle for towing. And that weakness is magnified by having a highly stressed 2.3L turbo four propelling a vehicle that weighs nearly 2 and a half tons.

@@tri3pleagent I don't doubt that's true on secondary roads. But the primary mission of a three row crossover is urban/suburban traffic and long slogs on freeways. Environments in which the "superior driving dynamics" of a 5000 lb vehicle are unlikely to be critical or even noticeable. The one clear advantage in vehicles the size of the Explorer is in towing and the Explorer is seriously deficient in that respect compared to other vehicles with RWD platforms.

Can you cite any reliable evidence that KIA's suffer from carbon build up? ... I thought not. To the extent that carbon build up is a problem in various brands appears to stem from the shape of the intake manifold, not the existence of GDI, itself.

Stephen Hendricks I’m not saying that KIA is the only GDI engine that has this problem, just saying that other car companies are dealing with the problem, as will KIA. Buy the KIA and if it works out for you, more power too you. It’s just a concern with GDI engines in general.

@@stephenhendricks103 It's not just Kia, but every GDI engine from every car manufacture has carbon buildup. It's a well documented and known fact from anyone who's worked on cars. It's not the shape of the manifold, it has to do with emissions EGR system. Carbon build up just builds up faster in GDI turbo motors because of the blow by hence why some manufactures do catch cans and some don't (how cheap can they make things to make more money for their investors), but ALL / ALL GDI motors have carbon build up. How fast is dependent on each motor from each manufacture. The only company that has proactively (more like doesn't want lawsuit) looked at the problem and added port injection back to combat the problem is Ford. The only company that refused to let go of port injection all together from the start, but instead just added GDI along with their port injection system is Lexus because they knew and they are all about reliability.

Poor color to compare on video. Compare White with White. Grey with Grey. Red with Red. Certain colors exude more value, sportiness, and economy than others. I am a fan of Kia but my family just got the 3.0 V6 400HP / 415 pound feet of torque Explorer ST and the telluride can’t compete. Granted the Ford Explorer ST after tax title fees was 54k. The MSRP was 62,020 but with negotiations and rebates got it down to 54k... Some of the favorite amenities: The massage seats, wireless phone charge pad, automatic high beam headlights, rain sensing wipers, heated steering wheel, heated front and rear 2nd row seats, a/c seats up front, WiFi hot spot, ST puddle lamp lights, larger 10.1” NAV screen, 14 speaker audio system, panoramic sun roof, Sport Tuned Suspension, 0-60 in 5.2 seconds, top speed 142mph governed. That’s a 10th of a second faster than the 1991 GMC Typhoon. Rear wheel drive feels so much better than the Kia’s bias to the front wheel drive. Power 3rd row... Kia’ 3rd row is manual only. Kias mpg is 19 city/24 highway, where the explorer compared in the video gets 20 city/28 hwy awd. With Explorer ST that we have it’s rated at 18 city/24 highway and our ST is the fastest SUV available in the market under 60k. The AWD also has hill decent control, trailer sway control for pulling the ski boat, 5,600 lbs Max Trailer Weight, that’s 600lbs more than the Kia, and terrain management system, 255 wide tires on 21” wheels. Keyless entry key pad virtually invisible, etc... The Explorer is a stand out better vehicle. Don’t get me wrong the Kia is a nice car but Kia’s price is artificially lower. They are making their cars lower in price to gain market share. The Ford Explorer ST is in a different league. It has better tech, performance, and comfort than the comparable Range Rover, Mercedes, and better value and usable power than the Durango SRT. All in all I’ll go back to what I started out saying... it’s a disservice to compare styling very well when not comparing the same color side by side.

That would be a great thing to have and we totally agree with you but unfortunately, this is the real-world for us.
