When I got my ever-tapping hands on the original Kaossilator, I fell in love. what a great little device! When the Kaossilator 2 came out, I scrounged up the cash and grabbed it (my plan was to sell my original to help justify the purchase). In theory, being able to record onto a memory card and the better screen/info sounded like a definite improvement. Once I played with the new one, I found that I wasn't using the new functions much at all and it was missing some of my favorite sounds from the original. I like the idea of a speaker but I found I wanted privacy whenever I used it anyway (on the plane, train, etc) I never got around to selling the original. Turns out the Kaossilator (to me) is a more "pure" little instrument. Like an electronic flute or ukulele... you play them and that's it. If my guitar recorded itself, I probably wouldn't use that feature either. Also, I like that the little compositions I make are like sandcastles... they are gone as soon as I cycle the power. I am MUCH more likely to sell the newer model than the original, which I think I will keep forever. Thank you for the review.

The coating on the 2s is called "Soft Touch Plastic". The worst property outside of the way it feels is that over time it will become sticky, and finally it will slough off onto whatever it's touching.

Btw, the sticky layer can easily be removed by the use of isopropyl alcohol. The result is a smooth hard plastic surface that is pleasant to touch. The only downside is that the surface can become a bit spotty.

You can actually lengthen the original from 8 to 16. Hold down the TAP/BPM and LOOP/REC buttons (at the same time) and flick on the power switch while holding them down. When you do so, you will see the screen text look a little glitched and... VOILA. Double the loop. This will work until you turn off the device, and you will just need to do it whenever you want the double loops.

Really nice video. I just picked the ko1 last week. I have to say, having owned the ko2s, I prefer the original. It is much easier to use for me who is visually impaired. Plus the build quality is much better. Both 2s's that I tried were broken out of the box. Not to mention, an undo function. I don't think the 2s has that.

I also got the yellow one. Much better than the new one, as it can hold 2 loops at the same time, while you play as well. And I got the Kaosspad 2S, add it to the mix and you have complete mini-setup.. I deserted mines for like 2 years and recently decided to try them out, made videos the result is real great for just "sketch pads".

For the original auditioning arpeggio hold the arpeggio button continuously and scrub back and fourth through the patterns with the dial while testing on the pad in real time (the video made it sound like the process is a lot more clunky than reality).

Nice video and comparison! I have the Kaossilator 1, combining it with the Microkorg. What about the Kaossilator 2 which has 2 separate loops (also two AA batteries-similar to the 2s)? It seems to be more tempting than the other two.

Yeah it has more features, definitely. Although it's more versatile, I still use the 1st version because I just liked the sounds a bit better. That's purely a matter of taste though, the 2nd version has a much better spec :) Gearfacts

They are all a bit different (I have all three) and have their own sounds and charms. Some MIDI implementation, looping, and a generally more “solid” experience can be has with the Kaossilator Pro or Pro+. But the original and the KO2 are very portable, and that can be very useful...

The Kaossilator is more fun than a barrel full of monkeys. I myself own both but prefer the original. I find it easier to hit exact notes, especially with a stylus of some kind. I used to lay a piece of paper over the touchpad and mark down where the notes/sounds are.

I have the original and I have the version two in the pearl white. I still prefer the original. I never use the version two and I will probably sell it. The onboard microphone is useless in my opinion. The battery life is awful and for something that portable it kind of stinks. The microSD is the only thing going for it as I wish the original had that. I wish I would’ve bought the mini Kaoss 2 instead. I do have the original mini Kaoss which is a standard in my studio even with higher end gear (and lower too-lol). I think that these were so underrated and when I bought mine I literally had two other friends purchase for themselves instantly because they were so easy and fun. I will agree the arpeggiator is really awesome. It’s a shame that the iOS app does not have arpeggiator. You would think that of all the iOS apps that Korg has released that can do so much they would throw one on the app. I love my iPads and my iPhones and I use a ton of apps. Especially Korg apps.. I love your channel and do you ever use any iOS devices? I find we use a lot of the same gear and I was just wondering if you use any. Thanks for the great videos and I’m jealous of your pink Kaossilator as I always wanted it in pink. I always thought the yellow was ugly and they literally released the pink version six months after the yellow and I certainly wasn’t going to buy another one. That’s why I’m happy when they released version two that it came in yellow or white although it sits a top a extra Little Bits getting little use.. Not that the color matters but there is something fun about the pink.

The pink is fun looking. I picked up my second today after watching your video and I had only used it once in the last month and it had really expensive batteries in it and they were totally dead. It is the hardest device on batteries I have ever used. I need to start using rechargeable. I am a vapor and I have 4 chargers (and 30 or so batteries for vaping)-you would think I would buy some rechargeable AAs. Lol! Love your vids!
