Newlyn in South West Cornwall has been a fishing port for at least 600 years and to this day is England’s largest port for the landing of fish. It was a combination of both the natural light and the lives of the fishing community that attracted a colony of artists in the late 19th century, forever putting Newlyn on the art map of both Cornwall and England. But Newlyn has neither remained stuck in the past nor surrendered to the bland tourist machine. Newlyn art gallery opened in 1895 and in the film director James Green explains more about how its cutting edge ethos, and place in the community.
